DEDICATED TO THE MEMORY OF HARRY SCHMITZ - A GREAT PHOTOGRAPHER TAKEN FROM US PREMATURELY BY COVID-19 ON 08 JANUARY 2021. HE ARRANGED THIS SHOOT. HARRY - RIP

Taken in a Mall in Johannesburg, South Africa -a megalopolis sometimes referred to as "The Mall Capital of the World"! An irresistible architectural feat and capture.

Beautiful stained glass touch to the magnificent Fourways Mall in the northern outer suburbs of Greater Johannesburg, South Africa.

The brilliant architectural innovations at the Fourways Mall in Johannesburg, South Africa, invite all with an eye for dazzling yet functional architecture to visit!

Reflections in a passageway of the magnificent Fourways Mall in Greater Johannesburg, taken shortly before the first COVID-19 lock-down. Sadly, it was the last architectural shoot that I was able to go on with the late Harry Schmitz before COVID-19 took his life. Alas, vaccines were not yet available at the time of his contracting this killer disease.

The Fourway Restaurant, sits where it was once home to Carr's gas station and Pontiac dealership (in 1932). It later changed ownership, becoming a Mobil Gas Station. The building was restored by the Bill Wallis family, with the assistance of a Route 66 preservation grant, and input from the Phillips 66 organization.

Another detail of the architectural masterpiece that that the Fourways Mall in Johannesburg is.

Fourways - Johannesburg, South Africa

The first panel features a vintage Highway patrol car and trooper assisting a motorist. It honors the Missouri Highway Patrol’s 75th Anniversary, in 2006. Bill Wallis was a member of the Masters Association, which assists survivors of troopers who die in the line of duty.

The center panel features Mr. Wallis and his beloved 1966 Stingray Corvette at the station as it looked during the 1970s.

The third panel is a station scene based on an old photograph. It shows Mr. Wallis involved in a station promotion that attracted the children of Cuba. He was never happier than when he was in a group of kids. Logos on their t-shirts and hat show some of the organizations that were important to Mr. Wallis.

Sometimes everything lines up. Not for good, not for bad, just for a fact. Sirkeci Main Train Station.

South Solon Meetinghouse

South Solon Meetinghouse is a historic church building in south central Solon, Maine. Built in 1842, it is a remarkably fine example of Gothic Revival architecture in a rural setting. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. The building is now owned by a non-profit organization and operated as a community function space.

The South Solon Meetinghouse is located at the fourway junction of Rices Corner (or South Solon) Road, Parkman Hill Road, and Meetinghouse Road, about 5 miles (8.0 km) southeast of the village center of Solon. It is a single-story wood frame structure, with a gable roof and clapboard siding. A squat single-stage square tower rises above the main (east-facing) facade, consisting of a belfry with Gothic-arched louvered openings, and pinnacles at the corners above. The main facade is symmetrically arranged, with a pair of entrances flanking a tall central window, all three elements topped by Gothic-arched panels. The sides of the building each have three similar windows.

The original box pews, pulpit and choir loft gallery are still in place. The interior of the South Solon Meeting House was elaborately painted between 1952 and 1957 by 13 artists from the nearby Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. The artwork inside this building features a painting technique called buon fresco which has been taught at the Skowhegan School since its foundation. Some of the artists involved in this fresco project are William King, Ashley Bryan, Sidney Hurwitz, John Wallace, Sigmund Abeles, Tom Mikkelson, and Edwin Brooks.

Snapped another weird one here, later. The skies are alive!

What fun. Snapping some shots of the sunset over Johannesburg tonight (three different light settings); only when I opened these up I saw the red light just above the middle of the photo. WHAT>? dead pixel on my camera, or something? But no, it wasn't there on the next series of shots, nor the ones preceding.

Just a plane? I didn't see or hear one while taking these pix. There IS what looks like one in the far far distance, in the bottom left-hand section of the photograph. But unlike the red light/s, it doesn't leave a motion blur behind it.

What do you mean you can't see it? Click here.

And also see here!

And this just in, from the UK

The vast, sprawling, Casino complex at Montecasino near Fourways, Johannesburg, is a delightfully 'outrageous' example of modern urban 'kitsch'! Over-stated in every possible aesthetic and architectural idiom, it a favourite gathering ground for those in search of amusement or escape from the dullness of everyday life into am extravagant 'pleasure palace' ! A Casino, shopping mall and child-friendly spaces all wrapped into one vast, ornate 'mock- Mediterranean' emporium, it has a deliciously 'decadent' feel to it. It adjoins a splendid bird park and has coffee-shops, fashion boutiques, cinemas and theatres - all decked out in outrageously over-stated 'regalia' - with mock skies and - really - mock-everything! Definitely worth a visit! You name it, Johannesburg has it! :-)

It was 37 degrees Celcius with no breeze and the earth was begging for some rain.

I found this spot under some trees in a busy suburb and it was remarkably cool.
