With the help of my dear friend, thruthelookingglass, I want to add my voice to the others that do not want the new Flickr BETA. It stinks. I have nothing against iphone photography and instagram, but we have Facebook for that. I WANT the comments.... the stories behind the photos.... I WANT to know where you took that picture, how and why. I WANT to hear your humorous stories and I want to learn from you. I will laugh with you and I will cry with you... and you may never even know it... because although your photos are powerful... they are MORE powerful when your WORDS are added!! Hey Flickr... STOP making it so hard to find and make comments! THIS IS NOT WHAT WE WANT! I have already lost contacts that I loved...people that I have learned so much from, are gone now because Flickr's changes drove them away. YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT IS BEST FOR US. And you won't, if you won't listen. I guess you just don't care. *sigh* So sad to see this happening to Flickr.
So, Flickr friends....if BETA drives you away....please leave a forwarding address so I can find you again! If you were worth FOLLOWING (remember when that used to be "...has added you as a contact"?) here....you are worth following out the door to a new home. I hope it won't come to that...but its not looking good. : (

So, if you have written us in that period of time, and haven't received a reply, please do email us again, and we will get back to you for sure this time around!
We are extremely sorry for this inconvenience!
The new Burnett Heads lighthouse was built to replace a wooden 1873 tower.
The lighthouse is now one of two Australian Cospas Sarsat satellite ground receiver stations. The other one is at Cave Point, near Albany in Western Australia.
The International Cospas-Sarsat Programme is a satellite-aided search and rescue initiative. It is organized as a treaty-based, nonprofit, intergovernmental, humanitarian cooperative of 44 nations and agencies. It is dedicated to detecting and locating radio beacons activated by persons, aircraft or vessels in distress, and forwarding this alert information to authorities that can take action for rescue.
The system utilizes a network of satellites that provide coverage anywhere on Earth. Distress alerts are detected, located and forwarded to over 200 countries and territories at no cost to beacon owners or the receiving government agencies.Cospas-Sarsat was conceived and initiated by Canada, France, the United States, and the former Soviet Union in 1979. The first rescue using the technology of Cospas-Sarsat occurred in September 1982.

Daily Photo - A Lonely Prayer at the Crypt
The entire labyrinthian network of crypts in Beunos Aires was lonely and eerie. For a few moments, I thought I saw a ghostly nun floating between the marble and granite tombs. And then I came around a corner, and saw her deep in prayer. I hung back a little before snapping a quick photo.

The Federal Detention Center, Miami (FDC Miami) is a prison operated by the Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP). It is located in Downtown Miami, at the corner of Northeast Fourth Street and North Miami Avenue.
Built in 1995, the detention center was designed for a capacity of 1,259 inmates. The facility primarily houses prisoners of the U.S. Marshals Service, both male and female. Its mission is to provide a safe and humane confinement of inmates and detainees, many of whom are involved in federal court proceedings in the Southern District of Florida.
Inmates are screened by a unit team member, and assigned quarters based on personal profile and security needs. Each unit team is composed of a unit manager, case manager(s), correctional counselor(s), and at times, an education representative. A federal register number is assigned to each inmate for identification and forwarding of correspondence while in federal custody.
In June 2010, the facility's security procedures prevented attorney Brittney Horstman from meeting a client when her underwire bra set off a metal detector. After returning from a bathroom without the item, she was turned away because of the detention center's dress code. The federal public defender's office contacted Warden Linda McGrew, who conducted an inquiry. McGrew concluded the incident was "an aberration" and promised it would not happen again.
According to a 2005 U.S. Department of Justice report, an estimated 12 percent of the complaints received by the department's inspector general involved inmates claiming sexual victimization by prison staff. In 2009, federal judge Cecilia Altonaga wrote that although the statute of limitations had passed to award damages in a civil case, "the BOP and FDC Miami did have notice of the illegal conduct taking place and were woefully deficient in addressing it."
The prison is located in downtown Miami, at the corner of Northeast Fourth Street and North Miami Avenue. In 2021, a luxury apartment complex called "Downtown 5th" had been built opposite the prison on what was previously a parking lot.

A little diversion from my recent wilder winter material.
This isn't me hankering for warm spring days (like more than a few Flickrite 'softies' who've been grumbling about the current season, & who have a cheek claiming to be keen on landscape photography when they don't embrace winter & its untouchable potential for drama), it's a case of forwarding an image that 's never likely to be considered again: I'm sure the banks around the tarn have been worn down by several inches over the years by the sheer volume of wandering photographers & probing tripod legs. The result, of course, is a wealth of far superior images on Flickr that quite simply laugh at my attempts.
If not quite spectacular, it was nonetheless a warm, gentle spring morning, & the early hour ensured complete solitude (pretty rare for this spot, I would guess).
They say all good things must come to an end, sooner or later. On Thursday December 11th, the Central Oregon & Pacific would run one last train out of Weed to finish clearing all the cars out of California and forwarding them to Medford, Oregon barely 10 years after reopening of the line in November 2015.
With the closure of the RFP veneer mill in Weed, virtually no shippers remain on this nearly 100-mile section of the railroad. And thus before a maintenance embargo can be implemented, every railcar must be cleared out of the trackage affected. On this last run, the train would have nearly 50 cars by the time they reached the state line, making it quite possibly the biggest train over the Siskiyous since the SP or maybe even the RailAmerica years.
From dawn to dusk on Thursday, me and my buddy Luke would follow the train northbound as it slowly built in size. Many more people from as far north as Albany, and as far south as the bay area would show up to see the action (and it certainly lived up to the hype) even though the weather was not always ideal.
It is quite unfortunate that many railroaders and laborers' hard work of keeping the railroad open in recent years is all going to waste thanks to the closure and exodus of another. While there is still hope that the mill in Weed can be reopened under new ownership, only time will tell. Interchange traffic from the Rogue Valley might also still be in the cards, but only if Union Pacific cooperates. If not CORP will more than likely let the route rot like Tennessee Pass, and even pull out of the lease all together.
At Hornbrook, the 701 crew picked up 13 empties on the siding before the arrival of the 507 crew from Medford.
William McCulloch (1832-1909), was a businessman, pastoralist and politician. In 1852 he migrated to Victoria to try his luck at the Mount Alexander goldfields.
The slow growth of railways prompted him to become a carrier and forwarding agent and he founded the firm bearing his name, which became the largest of its kind in Australia.
McCulloch moved the headquarters of the McCulloch Carrying Co. to Melbourne. Within fifteen years the company had twenty branch offices throughout Victoria, Riverina and South Australia, owned five Murray riverboats and was agent for about ten more and negotiated contracts with graziers on the Murray, Murrumbidgee and Darling Rivers.

In the summer of 2009, Meka, a female American Pit Bull, was rescued from her abusive owners. Shortly after she had three puppies - deKaf and Kahlua, two girls, and Kona, a boy.
These puppies are in the love and care of a foster working for Animals First Foundation, a Seattle (WA) based charity.
I spent two hours with these wonderful animals on Saturday 29th August 2009. Meka is an absolutely wonderful dog. She's suffered many horrible hardships, but her capacity for forgiveness has far outstripped this and she is incredibly friendly, gentle, and a wonderful mother. She is great with dogs & people. Her pups are ridiculously cute as the photos attest to. With the right attention, I'm excited about their prospects for a wonderful life.
The three pups are looking for new homes. Appreciate forwarding to anyone you think may be of help. Those interesting in adopting can email info@animalsfirstfoundation.org or visit the website http://www.animalsfirstfoundation.org
I sat in my 'control tower' at the end of a hard week at work. It had been busy through out but by yesterday morning the stress was mounting.
I had had a letter from my doctor's surgery (not that I know who my Doctor is) saying that I could no longer order my Repeat Prescription for a mild dose of stress relief tablets from my local pharmacy. I would have to organise them through my Doctor's Medical Centre. It said I could do them online. "Great!" So I got online. And it said I needed to register and get a password. "Damn". I rang the medical centre to ask how I registered and got a password. "Well, you have to come down here with ID and we then issue you with a Password, which takes a couple of days." "Aaargh! Don't you realise I have a job 20 miles away and I can't just float in and out of work when I feel like it? I'm not ill. I'm not off work". So I diverted through the morning rush hour traffic to go to the doctor's surgery before work and walked in with ID in the form of Passport and Driving Licence. "I'm sorry", said the receptionist," but we need a utilty bill as well, showing your address"......."Aaaarghhhh!" I can feel my blood pressure going up! "What was wrong with the old system?" She explained, "Too many people are ordering tablets and not using them, and it's a waste". But I said, " I get tablets because I know they are good for me. I'm not a hoarder. Why am I treated like a hoarder.... a waster?"
I'm stressed. Work is busy and pressurised. And I've just bought a house for my son and his wife and kids to live in until they can afford their own. And then my daughter bought a house at the same time and I thought it fair to give her the deposit for it. When asked about funds my daughter explained her Dad was giving her the deposit. So the solicitor asked if it was a loan or a gift. I said it was a loan because my daughter wanted to prove she was financially independent and would pay it back. "Ok" said the solicitor" I need confirmation it is an informal, inter family arrangement and that you will have no interest in the property. The mortgage company will need to know no other party has a financial claim on the property" Aw hell, I thought. "OK it is a gift" I reluctantly said, knowing that I have to keep a record of these things for tax reasons. "Right!" said the solicitor I need to know where that money is coming from, for money laundering reasons". Jeez, I thought, I'm already beginning to regret being generous. She's my daughter. I just gave it to her like I used to give her pocket money to buy sweets. No one ever asked me to prove she wasn't buying sweets on the back of money laundering. I explained I'm just in the process of buying another house too, so here's a copy of a statement showing that I have access to funds to cover all these amounts. Well, blow me down that was acceptable! Until they said they now needed proof of my ID. Aaaaaaarrrgh! You want me to come to your office in Crewe after 9.30 when you open to show my face and a Passport, at a time when I need to be in work at Manchester Airport? I refused. " No problem, " said the solicitor but I will have to charge you £ 1.80 to do an ID check online and £ 5.40 for an AML search. "Whaaaaaat? You even charge such petty amounts?" I couldn't believe it. Now the solicitor has emailed to ask me to send a copy of my Driving Licence, and as an afterthought has asked for my date of birth too, and I'm seriously beginning to think this is a wind up or the solicitor is bent and is aiming to hack my bank accounts. She says it is all required under Anti-Money Laundering Laws. But it's gone crazy. I'm not a thief, or a criminal. I'm not a drug dealer or a pimp. Why do Doctors and Solicitors assume I am a low-life until I can prove I am not? I'm just an ordinary, honest hard working tax payer. I must be in the minority. And therefore a mug.
At least back in my own little world of freight forwarding I can control things. I was surprised to answer the phone and find myself speaking to a lady who last called me nine months ago. She had told me she had a chronic intestinal illness that means she has to couple up to bags of a special fluid every day just to survive. Her son was getting married in Australia and she was desperate to fly out there for the occasion. But that meant taking a large amount of fluid with her at a cost of over £ 5500 just for the excess baggage one way. And if it didn't arrive within a day of her arriving she would die.
It turned out the supplier of these fluids is a worldwide company and they suggested they could make up her prescription in Australia so they could have a supply waiting there for her.
But when she rang me out of the blue yesterday it was to say she had been badly let down. She was flying to Australia on Monday morning and they just rang her to say they couldn't supply this fluid which is so critical to her living just another day.
And so began a day of working to provide a logistical solution for her. In reality it wasn't so complicated, but just more a matter of making sure every aspect was watertight. I must admit I got a huge amount of job satisfaction from helping her in her hour of need and she was generous with her thanks, but I said a photo of her enjoying her son's wedding was all the thanks we could possibly want. A picture really would be worth a thousand words.
I like our industry. I don't have to take any crap from any body. And in our business there really are people who can be trusted to go the extra mile to help someone without insisting on charging £ 1.80 for petty costs.
But the story with the solicitor didn't end there.
It gets better or worse. The Solicitor has now conducted "Bankruptcy" checks on me. Me, who bought a second house with cash and gave a cash gift to my daughter for her house deposit. (I'm sure the first sign of a Bankrupt is that they have significant sums of cash to hand)The check has found someone with the same name as me living in Newcastle upon Tyne, some 200 miles away who filed for bankruptcy in 2012. I now have to certify that that person is not me. Where will it end? I have now penned the following to my daughter's solicitor:
Dear Ms XXXX
I don't wish to sound rude so I am sending the toned down version.
I hate the expression, but are you sure you aren't having a laugh? I can't believe the cr@p I'm having to go through just because I gave my daughter a modest gift. I bought her a car many years ago that cost more than the gift I have given this time. Where was the Serious Fraud investigation into how I paid for the car? I just bought a second house with funds from the same source but I don't even remember having to prove my identity or where the money came from. With all these requests for proof of this and that I suspect my identity and background would have been less scrutinised if I had actually been convicted and sent to prison for stealing the money. I'm just glad you haven't demanded a strip search yet.
So you want written proof I'm not a bankrupt, to give to the mortgage lender, even though I have no involvement in the ownership of the property so that they can be sure that the money I gave as a gift to my daughter, and which you have already received, is available to be paid to them? But you also require proof I am not a bankrupt who magically found enough money to buy another house with cash and to make sure I am not a drug dealer, thief or pimp?
I don't even know who you are and that now you have received all this info on me, how do I know you are not planning to hack my accounts? Of course, I don't mean that, but surely you get my point. Is your company as careful to check that payments to your firm don't come from laundered monies?
And by the way that 'gift' to my daughter was also from my wife, with whom I share joint accounts. How do you know she isn't a stay at home 'Mom' who makes cakes and sells them to little children without declaring it to the tax man and then launders the cash by buying sausages and toilet rolls at Tesco? I note you haven't asked her to prove who she is. Is that an oversight, and now you will demand the same of her?
Come on, will this ever end? I've more important things to do than to regret helping my daughter out.
I'm not that bad! But you are driving me mad.
Best regards
MMM

Excerpt from en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yellowknife_Airport:
Yellowknife Airport (IATA: YZF, ICAO: CYZF) is located in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, Canada. The airport is part of the National Airports System, and is operated by the Government of the Northwest Territories. The airport has regular scheduled passenger service and a number of freight services. In 2007, the terminal handled 527,000 passengers.
In 2008 the airport's passenger terminal underwent an expansion to the departure/check-in section, roughly doubling the size of the terminal. The airport is classified as an airport of entry by Nav Canada and is staffed by the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA). CBSA officers at this airport can handle general aviation aircraft only, with no more than 15 passengers.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) "G" Division maintains a hangar for its air section just south of the passenger terminal. It is adjacent to a hangar used by the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) to house the CC-138 Twin Otter and other utility aircraft operated by 440 Transport Squadron, a subsidiary of 8 Wing.
Canadian NORAD Region Forward Operating Location Yellowknife is located south-west of the airstrip. It was built for forwarding deployment of the McDonnell Douglas CF-18 Hornet in times of conflict.

Even though I still have hundreds of photos from the German trip to post, I'm fast-forwarding to the end of that trip when I was planespotting at Dresden Airport for my flight home.
Ironically, THIS WAS the flight that I really wished to get on. I had wanted to fly an Air Canada/ Swiss combo flight Toronto - Zurich - Hamburg/ Dresden - Zurich - Montreal - Toronto. Alas, but that particular flight routing was un-affordably expensive, so I ended up doing Toronto - Brussels - Hamburg/ Dresden - Frankfurt-am-Main - Toronto. Still, at Dresden Airport, I was delighted to see the Swiss flight that I had wanted to be on!

A brief summary of this pioneering UK-Middle East haulier can be found on the website of its successor Astran Worldwide Shipping (AWS):
"Astran has delivered consignments to all corners of the globe for over 50 years. A hugely respected, highly reliable and well known freight forwarding and transportation operation based in the South East of England, it prides itself on offering exceptional customer service for every customer's consignment, small, medium or large. Astran was the first UK Company to operate long distance road freight to the Middle East. The pioneering delivery by truck to Afghanistan was undertaken back in 1964 by the two founders of Asian Transport, later to become known as Astran. Adding the Gulf States, and Qatar in particular, to its regular destinations, Astran grew in stature in the early days of oil and gas discovery, servicing the UK plus the European and Asian Continents".
Like most of its contemporaries on the Middle East Run, Astran favoured Scanias and Volvos but this fictional DAF would probably not have been out of place. Thanks to Martin Vonk for the base image (28-Mar-16).

On 23 May 2024, the train was taken over in Děcin by Vectron 383.220, which the day before had transported a trio of new Vectrons to the Czech Republic for České dráhy.
Above is a CGI rendering based on the long range Sd.Kfz.251/3 Ausf. D, photographed top right. This Funkpanzerwagen identified by Hans Weber as organic to 2./SS-Pz.Nachr.Abt.1. was assigned to Kampfgruppe Peiper during the Ardennes Offensive, in December 1944. The photo was taken in La Gleize after KG Peiper was destroyed. The vehicle mounts a telescopic mast, aka KM9 Kurbelmast, normally associated with the Fu 11 SE 100 used in a Divisionsfunkstelle (radio vehicle used for divisional liaison). Sd.Kfz.251/3 with Fu 11 have been however correlated with use of the KM9 Kurbelmast plus a Rahmenantenna (frame antenna). The vehicle illustrated however uses a KM9 without Rahmenantenne, but has an internally mounted Sternantennefuss (mount for star antenna type d) associated with both Fu 4 and Fu 8 radios. Based on other egs, this vehicle probably also had a 1.4 metre Stabantenne on a late-style externally mounted Stabantennefuss on the upper left hull side, usually used with the common Fu.Spr.Ger.F radio.
The photo below left shows a somewhat similarly configured Sd.Kfz.251/3 of Panzer Brigade.106. pictured north of Remagen, in March 1945. It has a KM9 Kurbelmast on the left rear, but this Funkpanzerwagen instead has an antenna mounted externally on the right rear, without the usual box armour.

One of the major reasons why we need to work towards protecting the environment is because it helps to protect humanity. If we didn’t have our environment, then we wouldn’t have a place to live or resources to live.it is our moral obligation to do so. As a human who lives on earth, it is our responsibility to make sure that it is protected. We must give back to the future generation that what we have received and enjoying. Give them an environment that isn’t damaged and teach them how to continue living sustainably. I request all good souls to plant Banyan tree while making tree plantation. It will have a long lasting effect for mankind and go a long way in carry forwarding the nature to the next generation and will also give fruits useful for birds. Instagram Id : @nagendran_c4777. Planting of trees in a special occasion such as Birthday Wedding etc is a excellent gesture. It can be done in memory of our Parents, Teachers, Friends and also people who comes across in our life such as Doctors Nurses and health staff for their noble service to the society.

Former WAGR and Westrail then ATN Access L254 together with 8177 head out of Dynon and across the Maribynong River with MC2. The train is about to enter Bunbury Street tunnel, one of the bottlenecks for freight paths into and out of Melbourne and its port. The L class locos were based on the US EMD SD40 locomotives but had reduced dimensions to fit the WAGR loading gauge. Classified as model GT26C they had the same power plant as the Victorian C class locos: 16-645-E3.
The Melbourne skyline has changed dramatically since this photo was taken and FCL has completely disappeared as a freight forwarding company. (April 21, 2005). (05C.4082)
