Eilean Donan is recognised as one of the most iconic images of Scotland all over the world. Situated on an island at the point where three great sea lochs meet, and surrounded by some majestic scenery, it is little wonder that the castle is now one of the most visited and important attractions in the Scottish Highlands.

Although first inhabited around the 6th century, the first fortified castle was built in the mid 13th century and stood guard over the lands of Kintail. Since then, at least four different versions of the castle have been built and re-built as the feudal history of Scotland unfolded through the centuries.

Partially destroyed in a Jacobite uprising in 1719, Eilean Donan lay in ruins for the best part of 200 years until Lieutenant Colonel John MacRae-Gilstrap bought the island in 1911 and proceeded to restore the castle to its former glory. After 20 years of toil and labour the castle was re-opened in 1932.

There are four generations of the MacRae family past, present and future who are still the Constables of Eilean Donan Castle today.

ighrem (fortified village in English) (ksar in Arabic), along the former caravan route between the Sahara and Marrakech in present-day Morocco. Most citizens attracted by the tourist trade live in more modern dwellings in a village on the other side of the river, although there are four families still living in the ancient village. Inside the walls of the ksar are half a dozen (Kasbahs) or merchants houses and other individual dwellings, and is a great example of Moroccan earthen clay architecture.

Ruins of a medieval fortified church are located above the village of Lúčka, situated at the border of the Slovenské rudohorie mountain range and the national park of Slovenský kras. The village had been known since 1409 as part of the Turňa Castle Estate donated to Pál Besen by King Sigismund.

According to the testimony provided by the local church, however, the village dates back to at least the half of the 13th century. The church itself was built as an early-Gothic church of the Gemer style. In the first half of the 15th century, it was surrounded by a defensive stone wall with a watchtower situated in the front. The small fortress was captured by Jan Jiskra’s troopsand is commonly called the Hussite church by the locals. Only the external walls of the church and the considerably lowered defensive wall with the tower that later on served as a belfry have been preserved up to the present. The quadratic tower used to have two floors in the past, with three windows on the first floor and three loopholes on the ground floor that served to watch the surroundings and to protect the fortress from three sides: the west, the south, and the east. The top of the slope upon which the church was built provided for the natural protection from the north.

The area where the church stands counts among the ecologically cleanest territories in Slovakia. It provides for exceptionally good conditions for recreationin a peaceful natural setting and for short walks in the basin of the Čremošná, to the lake of Lúčka, as well as to the surrounding beech and fir forests. Moreover, the unique natural reserve of Zádielska dolina is located in close distance, lined with plateaux where traces of fortified prehistoric settlements were confirmed by archaeological surveys.

is a fortified tower located in the civil parish of Santa Maria de Belém in the municipality of Lisbon, Portugal. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site (along with the nearby Jerónimos Monastery) because of the significant role it played in the Portuguese maritime discoveries of the era of the Age of Discoveries. The tower was commissioned by King John II to be part of a defence system at the mouth of the Tagus river and a ceremonial gateway to Lisbon.

The tower was built in the early 16th century and is a prominent example of the Portuguese Manueline style, but it also incorporates hints of other architectural styles. The structure was built from lioz limestone and is composed of a bastion and a 30-metre (98.4 ft), four-storey tower. It has incorrectly been stated that the tower was built in the middle of the Tagus (Tejo) and now sits near the shore because the river was redirected after the 1755 Lisbon earthquake. In fact, the tower was built on a small island in the Tagus River near the Lisbon shore.

The Citadel in Hue, Vietnam consists of 8 kilometers of walls in a square (2 km X 2 km) all surrounded by a wide deep moat fed by the river. There is a fortified gate on each side plus fortified towers including the corners. Within the Citadel lies the Imperial City with it's own 2.5 km of walls.

In June 1802, after more than a century of division and the defeat of the Tây Sơn dynasty, Nguyễn Ánh ascended the throne of a unified Vietnam and proclaimed himself Emperor Gia Long. With a nation now stretching from the Red River Delta to the Mekong Delta, Emperor Gia Long moved the capital from the northern Thăng Long (current Hanoi) to Huế, the ancestral seat of the Nguyễn lords. Gia Long looked to "Confucianism and Chinese models of statecraft" as the best modes of authority, and with this ideology, he ordered the construction of a palace complex based on Beijing's Forbidden City in Huế. Geomancers were consulted as to a propitious location site for the new city, and construction began in 1803. Thousands of workers were ordered to build the walled citadel and ringing moat, measuring some 10 kilometres (6.2 mi) long. The original earthwork was later reinforced and faced with brick and stone resulting in 2 m (6 ft 7 in)-thick ramparts.

This beautiful fortified manor house near Ludlow in Shropshire just has to be one of my favourite subjects. The previous time I visited, this end of the castle was covered in scaffolding. This time the day started off dull and foggy, though it brightened up later. I didn't have time to reshoot everything, so this has become an exercise in processing. Hopefully it captures some of the essence of this beautiful medieval building.

Hosman is one of the fortified churches in Transylvania close to Sibiu. These churches are very special to Transylvania. They started to emerge in the 13th century when Hungarian and German settlers tried to resist against Ottoman and Tatar invasions. These churches allowed the inhabitants to defend the village for a limited time without the need of permanent wall around the villages. This shot was taken last December.

The old town, perched on a limestone island, is connected to the new part of the town, on the mainland, by an arched bridge built in the 1900s. Another bridge to the port has recently been added. The walls, bastions, and towers, which originally defended the town from invaders, today protect it from rough seas, while also preserving the charm of days gone by.

Before exploring the narrow paved streets of the historic centre, from where you can catch an occasional glimpse of the sea, stop off at the authentic fish market, held in what used to be the moat of the imposing castle, to vie with the locals for the best of the day's catch. The Angevin fortress, almost completely surrounded by the sea, was recently restored and is now accessible from the old town. Here you can immerse yourself in the history, as you wander through fortified towers, tunnels, corridors, and majestic halls.

Carcassonne is the "Cité", this very famous and extraordinary architectural monument, unique in Europe, this miracle of stones on a hill, looming over the surrounding vineyards of Minervois or Carcassès, the Black Mountain or the sinuous outlines of the Corbières with towers and ramparts that are centuries old....

Old part of the town of Kastel Gomilica provided setting for the Free City of Braavos during filming of the Season V of Game of Thrones. Kastel Gomilica is part of the town of Kastela, located between the city of Split and the town of Trogir on the Adriatic coast of Dalmatia, Croatia.

Fortified by the emperor Henry V, Dinkelsbühl received in 1305 the same municipal rights as Ulm, and obtained in 1351 the position of a free imperial city, which it retained till 1802, when it passed to Bavaria. Its municipal code, the Dinkelsbühler Recht, published in 1536, and revised in 1738, contained a very extensive collection of public and private laws.

Every summer Dinkelsbühl celebrates the city's surrender to Swedish Troops during the Thirty Years' War. This reenactment is played out by many of the town's residents. This reenactment features a whole array of Swedish troops attacking the city gate and children dressed in traditional garb coming to witness the event.

The Ehrenburg is the ruin of a spur castle at 230 m above sea level (NN) in the vicinity of Brodenbach in Germany. The castle had a very eventful history. It was built on a rocky spur in the valley of the Ehrbach, a right bank valley of the Moselle. Once the fortified heart of a small imperial barony with estates between the Lower Moselle and Middle Rhine, it is today a cultural monument that hosts numerous events.

Brielle is a very old, fortified city. Its name is derived from the Celtic word brogilo (meaning "closed area" or "hunting grounds"). The oldest writings about Brielle indicate that the current location is the "new" Brielle. Den ouden Briel (Old Brill) must have been situated somewhere else on the Voorne-Putten Island. It received city rights in 1306. The city was for a long time the seat of the Count of Voorne, until this fiefdom was added to Holland in 1371. It had its own harbour and traded with the countries around the Baltic Sea. Brielle even had its own trading colony in Sweden.

During the Eighty Years' War between the Netherlands and Spain, the Capture of Brielle on April 1, 1572, by Protestant rebels, the Watergeuzen, marked a turning point in the conflict, as many towns in Holland then began to support William of Orange against the Spanish Duke Fernando Álvarez de Toledo, 3rd Duke of Alba who was sent to pacify The Netherlands. This event is still celebrated each year on April 1 and the night before (known as Chalk Night (kalknacht) when the city is defaced with chalk - and now also white paint). [Wikipedia]

The Medina of Essaouira, formerly called Mogador ("small fortress"), is an outstanding example of a fortified city from the mid-18th century, surrounded by a wall. For centuries, this port has played an important role as an international commercial port, linking Morocco and sub-Saharan Africa with Europe and the rest of the world. The city is also an example of a multicultural center.

Archaeological research shows that Essaouira has been inhabited since prehistoric times. At the end of the first century BC the King of Berbers, Juba II, founded a factory of Tyrian violet, processing crustaceans found on tidal rocks and coastal islands into a dye.

Found a Roman vase and coins from the third century and a Roman villa.

In 1506, the king of Portugal, ordered the construction of a fortress called Castelo Real de Mogador.

Medina of Essaouira in 2001 was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List as an example of 18th-century castle.

Stahleck Castle (German: Burg Stahleck) is a 12th-century fortified castle in the Upper Middle Rhine Valley at Bacharach in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. It stands on a crag approximately 160 metres (520 ft) above sea level[1] on the left bank of the river at the mouth of the Steeg valley, approximately 50 kilometres (31 mi) south of Koblenz, and offers a commanding view of the Lorelei valley. Its name means "impregnable castle on a crag", from the Middle High German words stahel (steel) and ecke (here: crag).[1] It has a water-filled partial moat, a rarity in Germany. Built on the orders of the Archbishop of Cologne, it was destroyed in the late 17th century but rebuilt in the 20th and is now a hostel. --- Wikipedia
