We were lucky to have up pretty close views of these Terns as they dove for fish at Duck Lake. The colony only consists of 25 birds in this area. I believe that this is the only place that Forster's Terns breed in BC.

For at least one morning, most of the Forster's Terns decided that plucking breakfast from the water was preferable to auguring in, although there was a fair amount of that activity as well on Armand Bayou.

Getting a full frame shot of a bird in flight is always my goal. And I find it even more difficult when the bird is really close to me like this Tern was. Fortunately, my camera responded to my fingers!

Sibling of the fledgling Forster's Tern I posted last month, being fed by the same parent as it alternated between them on Armand Bayou.

"Flashing slender, silvery wings and an elegantly forked tail, Forster's Terns cruise above the shallow waters of marshes and coastlines looking for fish. These medium-sized white terns are often confused with the similar Common Tern, but Forster’s Terns have a longer tail and, in nonbreeding plumage, a distinctive black eye patch."

This Forster's Tern (Sterna forsteri) stopped by for a rest at Peace Valley Park, New Britain PA. one morning and I was lucky to see it on the railing at the spillway by the dam.
Well, it's not that gorgeous love-on-the-beach stuff - rather, it's love on the dock at an inland regional park lake. And these are Forster's Terns. Anyway, the courtship is very elegant as he circles her. She took his fish offering and he's very proud.

A Forster's Tern changes up its normal feeding tactic, keeping its wings uplifted and dry while plucking a baitfish from Armand Bayou.

The water in this lake is pumped in through a rotary pump from the nearby bay. So more often we see fishes with missing upper half.
Generally small fishes pass through unscathed, but the larger (relative) ones get chopped off. Sometimes we do see the terns catching a whole fish, but this time it was not the case.
I went looking for something else today, but terns diving for fish was a fun consolation. I can say over the years I've spent countless hours watching terns fish, or waiting for terns to fish, but I can't say I ever got a head-on angle of a successful dive before. So this is completely about the symmetry - definitely not about the overcast light and blah color. Unless you like silver I guess. Forster's Tern really is coming out with a fish there, btw.
