G'day sports fans ... .up until a couple of years back I was heavily involved in our universities Formula SAE motor racing project.
In 2003 we took on the world in Detroit and Wollongong won the world championship - a feat previously not achieved in 23 years of competition. Our vehicle that year code named 'Stumpy' (the Wombat) set a new benchmark for SAE at the time.
The following year we returned to the US with "Sergio" our best attempt to date, but, like working with children and animals race cars can and will go their own way ... and we had a couple of minor issues with Serge - still for our money he was the best thing since sliced bread.
Fast forward 15 years an poor Serge had been thrashed and experimented on by every man and his dog - the rules for FSAE which is in fact a design competition state that a new vehicle is built for each year with rule changes making this necessary.
Serge became a restoration project for a few of the guys that built him (yours truly included) with the intent of seeing him 'concourse ready' again one day last year.
Last weekend a new event was trialled at Eastern Creek Motorsport Park dubbed - 'Formula Sydney' and Sergio was allowed to participate in his own 'demonstration class' (he doesn't meet the current rules to compete) he was still in need of some new components (including, critically, slick racing tyres) but he had his moment in the sun again - finally.
I was on his pit crew for the day on the Saturday- with access to the track and snagged a 'few' frames of Serge and couple of the other teams vehicles .. including the current Wollongong vehicles (there are two classes petrol and electric)
