Today's forms of money have developed from primitive money, e.g. B. mussels or rice, which were accepted as a means of exchange in business life. Money initially belonged to the cultic and legal sphere and referred to "that with which one can repay or pay penance and sacrifices". Only after the 14th century did it assume its current meaning as a "coined currency". From the middle of the 19th century, the gold standard existed in many countries, promising the exchange of legal tender (coins, banknotes) for a fixed amount of gold. By the 1930s almost all major states had abandoned the gold standard. Instead of such a standard, monetary policy measures were taken by the central banks to ensure price stability.

Geld, auch benannt als:
Cash (englisch für „Bargeld“)
Kies (jiddisch kis, „Geldbeutel“)
Mäuse (jiddisch meus, „Geld“)
Moneten (lateinisch moneta, „Münze“; vgl. engl. money)
Zaster (rotwelsch saster, „Eisen“)
Kohle
Asche

A pastel from my art 'chapter' archive. Making this little image was sheer joy. With no planning at all, everything about it flowed out spontaneously, with ease and grace, and I was pleasantly surprised at the result.

When it was time to setup for an evening shot, the sun was teasing me with light. Although present and to my left, it was timidly hiding behind a low cloud. It seemed to mock me with its faint glow, provoking a shot, then just as quickly hiding, as if playing some game.
However, I knew the chance for side lighting would come because the clouds had vacated the horizon. I composed the shot with the use of tiny puddles in the mud. They appear disproportionate to the scene with the lens inches away. But lead the viewer in. Then for a moment the canceled becomes the revealed, and the side lighting changes the scene, helping shapes take form.
A week on and the frog embryos are developing into tadpole form (can be seen clearer if enlarged). Fascinating & wonderful to observe.
Orpheus takes the form of an inverted pyramid, sunk into the earth and open to the elements. It is at once a negative space and a sculptural form. Its serene lines seem to invite you to descend into its depths and enjoy the tranquillity.
With rejuvenation of the garden gathering steam, the current Duke was passionate about adding a 21st century edge. He wanted a creative endeavour that would compliment and enhance the triumphant landscapes of his ancestors. So the Duke commissioned Kim Wilkie to design a striking new landform, Orpheus. It is named after the famed musician of Greek mythology who, when his wife Eurydice died, went down into the underworld to try and reclaim her. His music was so beautiful that Hades relented and allowed Eurydice to return to the world of the living.

The Himalayas, or Himalaya, form a mountain range in Asia separating the plains of the Indian subcontinent from the Tibetan Plateau.
The Himalayan range has many of the Earth's highest peaks, including the highest, Mount Everest. The Himalayas include over fifty mountains exceeding 7,200 metres (23,600 ft) in elevation, including ten of the fourteen 8000m peaks. By contrast, the highest peak outside Asia – Aconcagua, in the Andes – is 6,961 metres (22,838 ft) tall.
The Himalayan range is bordered on the northwest by the Karakoram and Hindu Kush ranges, on the north by the Tibetan Plateau, and on the south by the Indo-Gangetic Plain. The Himalayas are distinct from the other great ranges of central Asia, although sometimes the term Himalaya is loosely used to include the Karakoram and some of the other ranges. The Himalayas – inhabited by 52.7 million people – are spread across five countries: India, Nepal, Bhutan, China and Pakistan, with the first three countries having sovereignty over most of the range. Some of the world's major rivers, the Indus, the Ganges, and the Tsangpo-Brahmaputra, rise in the Himalayas, and their combined drainage basin is home to roughly 600 million people. The Himalayas have profoundly shaped the cultures of the Indian subcontinent; many Himalayan peaks are sacred in Hinduism and Buddhism.
Lifted by the subduction of the Indian tectonic plate under the Eurasian Plate, the Himalayan mountain range runs, west-northwest to east-southeast, in an arc 2,400 kilometres (1,500 mi) long.
There are two sea stacks that together form Drangarnir. These impressive natural formations have become a symbol of the Faroe Islands’ unspoiled landscapes and untamed wilderness. To me, they conjure visions of a dragon's back, rising up from the icy waters swirling along its base. It is a haven for birdlife and a bucket list item for photographer's fortunate enough to find themselves in this Viking wonderland.
For me, it was an experience of a lifetime and the fulfillment of a bucket list dream that all began with a tiny image I saw on Instagram of a grass roofed cottage. What an incredible privilege to photograph the immense Drangarnir sea stacks (the smaller one rises out of the ocean to a height of over 200 '), probably one of the most iconic formations of the Faroe Islands.
Unfortunately, it is also one of the more harrowing places to get to. If I wasn’t grey already, that day would have done it in spades. Thank God for great travel partners, and our gifted leader, Thomas Vikre, who guided us through the gauntlet of eel-slippery rocks, steep slopes ending abruptly into the North Atlantic, and high tides bouncing our Zodiac around like a ping pong ball. Honestly, I would have turned back each time if given a choice. I have no desire to “prove” myself, or conquer fears at this point in my life, but it was a one way street, so no way to turn back. And in the end, I am glad for that. The beauty and majesty of the place is really indescribable, and to stand in the midst of it was truly an “epic” 😉 experience for us all.

The Central Methodist Church, also known as the Central Methodist Mission or Metropolitan Methodist Church, is a large and historically important Methodist church located on Greenmarket Square in Cape Town, South Africa. The church has played a significant role in the growth of Methodism in South Africa. In 1988, the Metropolitan Church merged with Buitenkant Street Church, forming the Central Methodist Mission.
History and activism
The church is known for its active advocacy efforts such as its yellow banner campaign that seeks to rise awareness of important social issues and as a site of refuge. The church windows were damaged by police water cannons during the anti-apartheid Purple Rain protest in 1989.

I know this is all a bit yuk to some but I have found this incredibly fascinating. This is the Poplar Hawk Moth Caterpillar becoming a chrysalis, it's head and little feet die off first like you can see here and then within a few hours they are totally brown.

Free soloing is the most dangerous form of rock climbing where free soloists climb above 'safe' heights where a fall would almost certainly be fatal. They climb without ropes or other protective equipment, using only their special climbing shoes and bag of climbing chalk to help maintain friction of their hands with the rock.
Inspired by watching the sport climbing at the Olympics, Brian attempts his first free solo. This image shows him successfully negotiating the serious crux pitch, his climbing partner looking on anxiously. Of course, snails have no need of chalk, making use of their natural sticky slime to keep them as safe as possible.

To gain control of the world of space is certainly one of our tasks. The danger begins when in gaining power in the realm of space we forfeit all aspirations in the realm of time. There is a realm of time where the goal is not to have but to be, not to own but to give, not to control but to share, not to subdue but to be in accord. Life goes wrong when the control of space, the acquisition of things of space, becomes our sole concern.
Nothing is more useful than power, nothing more frightful. We have often suffered from degradation by poverty; now we are threatened with degradation through power. There is happiness in the love of labor; there is misery in the love of gain. Many hearts and pitchers are broken at the fountain of profit. Selling himself into slavery to things, man becomes a utensil that is broken at the fountain.
AS CIVILIZATION ADVANCES, the sense of wonder almost necessarily declines. Such decline is an alarming symptom of our state of mind. Mankind will not perish for want of information, but only for want of appreciation. The beginning of our happiness lies in the understanding that life without wonder is not worth living. What we lack is not a will to believe but a will to wonder.

I don't know how much I'll be able to be on Flickr except to post some photos because my hip surgery is taking place on Feb. 9th and I have a lot of things to do. I'll stop in whenever possible but I know that I will miss a lot of photos. Right now I want to spend time getting things ready, spend time with my family, and my dogs. I hope you all understand. Hopefully I'll have a chance to let everyone know how I'm doing after I get home from the hospital. I'll do that as soon as possible. Obviously it will be awhile before I can come back to Flickr in full force. I wish you all a very nice weekend and want to thank you all for being such great friends here on Flickr. Lots of love and hugs!
I'm sorry that I am posting so many photos. I just have so many and I want to have more on here for the Cincinnati Zoo. You certainly don't have to comment on them because I can't promise that I'll be able to visit your beautiful photostreams consistently for awhile. I'll miss seeing all your beautiful photos and talking with you all. Thanks everyone!

The Panamint Range forms the western edge of Death Valley, the lowest point in the continental United States. The highest peak in the Panamint Range is Telescope Peak, with an elevation of 11,049 ft (3,368 m). Mt Whitney, the tallest mountain in the contiguous United States and the Sierra Nevada, with an elevation of 14,505 feet (4,421 m), is directly behind us. The high Sierra casts long shadows on the Alabama Hills, leaving the Panamint Range in sunlight.
Hope your week is off to a great start! Thanks for stopping by and for all of your kind comments, awards and faves -- I appreciate them all.
