This is the formation you see on the 12-mile Scenic Drive as you prepare to make the turn into Grand Wash Road. Grand Wash is a famous gorge that cuts its way through the upper portion of the Waterpocket Fold in Capitol Reef National Park. The wash connects the Scenic Road to Highway 24. The dry slot canyons in Capitol Reef (provided there are no flash floods) are an alternative to hiking Zion Narrows.
Capitol Reef got its name from a line of white domes and cliffs of Navajo Sandstone, each of which looks somewhat like the United States Capitol building, that run from the Fremont River to Pleasant Creek on the Waterpocket Fold. The Waterpocket Fold is a 100-mile long wrinkle in the earth's crust known as a monocline. It extends from nearby Thousand Lakes Mountain to the Colorado River (now Lake Powell). Capitol Reef National Park was established to protect this colorful and immense geologic feature.

Mark’s pipetting skills are through the roof! Well not literally. It’s crazy how being an astronaut makes you learn and do so many different things. Mark was working on NASA's Celestial immunity experiment, that requires astronauts to be adept at the laboratory skills... in microgravity! The experiment designers do everything they can to make it as easy as possible as we are not experienced lab workers, but we do what is required, and this is why we spend so much time training for our flights.

Fountain Formation. This unit of Pennsylvanian age is exposed along the eastern flank of the Front Range of the Colorado Rockies. it is composed of debris washed off the eastern isde of the Ancestral Rockies and deposited unconformably by torrential streams upon early Proterozoic metasediments about 300 million years ago. The Fountain Formation is an arkose, a sandstone and conglomerate with a high percentage of feldspar. The eastern-dipping Fountain Formation marks the western edge of the Denver Basin. The unit is exposed spectacularly at the Garden of the Gods in Colorado Springs and in the famous, steeply dipping flatirons at Boulder, Colo., The Fountain Formation has a counterpart of the same age and composition on the western flank of the Front Range, The Red Cliff Formation was similarly formed by sediment eroded off the western side of the Ancestral Rockies. The last little bit on the way down. Me carefully looking where i'm stepping, at the same time looking for pics. Directly above me, on the horizon is the white pyramid formation, maybe about 10 kilometers or 15. On the right, emerging from behind another set of hills, you can see one of those long coal trains. Some artificial shade shelters are no substitute for trees.
