What an afternoon of storms. I was hoping and we got them Just about 11pm. The Third Round of Storms!
Utilizing the city lights to paint the sky so I'm not used to doing this even the lightning is my favorite thing to capture I'm not very well versed with the Nikon D50 in this process.......
There was a ton of cloud to ground lightning off in the distance...Click Click Click

Dark, looming storm clouds gather ominously over a rural landscape, casting shadows over the fields and a railway track. The contrast between the turbulent sky and the serene land creates a dramatic and powerful scene.

Late June Storm, severe warned and moving my way...
Packed and Saddled and ready for that afternoon's events. Getting fulled up and looking due southwest. Towers were exploding and we had nice crystal clear air in front of this storm. The Severe Warning was for winds and hail. We just didn't have enough shear with this storm for it to be come tornadic.
Outflow Dominate it shall be... Oh this was going to be one to remember! Most of these captures came from south of Kearney, about 14-15 miles just north of the NTV Studios.
I had to eventually move north back into the city limits of Kearney. Sitting on the south side of the Interstate pointing the camera due southeast then to the southwest. This shelf cloud had some really amazing structure to it. Just a jaw dropping storm!

Now back in South Central Nebraska... We were about to experience the strongest outflow boundary of the year. 110-120 mph winds were accompanied by this super strong beast. Tons of cloud to cloud lightning and beautiful arcus shelf cloud structure was beautiful view as she approached from the southwest.
Now moving almost directly due east we had to jimmy south to Alma Nebraska from Hwy 89 to get back in front of this monster. Believe it or not, the calm before the storm was evident here. No wind until the shelf came over our heads and then we got hit hard. Luckily we had gear already prepped and put away as headed north as soon as this hit our location.
Though you know me... I waited till the very last second to get these captures!

6th Year in a row we have had a severe thunderstorm pop in south central Nebraska late evening on the 4th of July. Thousands of strikes and the cloud to cloud lightning was simply breathtaking.
This storm crested right south of the I-80 Nebraska corridor, which is just south of Kearney. It was stationary for about an hour and then it pushed a little east before it grew and slowly moved to the southeast into North Central Kansas.

Watch the white nuckle Video of that afternoon on Flickr
An Epic Chase Day was upon us. Though the rest of the Nation was celebrating the Holiday. National Weather Service had us pegged for a moderate risk that afternoon & evening. Due to my injures to my back the past few months. Chasing Storms has been on the back burner... Until Now!!!
First cells of the day were in North Central Kansas. The boundary line was from North Central Kansas up to Norfolk Nebraska & a bit further north. All the action that day was going to be the east of Hastings Nebraska & South. Planned it out correctly for time & distance.
We encountered this incredible updraft structure on the back side of this storm as we were passing though Hastings Nebraska. Were were trying to catch up to it Via Hwy 6 & we eventually we did just to the east to Sutton Nebraska.
This storm was producing 2" hail so we held off a few mins to the the west of Sutton. We had perfect view of the wall cloud due southwest of the hail core. Had a nice tail but never formed.
Proceeded south to get south of revved up supercell. We got along side of it via Hwy 81 south of Geneva Nebraska. Few miles south of Strang Nebraska we got ahead of the rain core & got in sight (paralleled to this storm) of this incredible developing wall cloud under the base of this storm. It did not produce a tornado but the views from this supercell were down spectacular.
We had to reposition ourselves a few miles south of Bruning Nebraska as this Supercell move south southeast.
The video & images I caught that afternoon were worth the trip. Phenomenal Storm Captures out on the plains of South Central Nebraska on the 4th of July.
Made it home to light of some fireworks & delicious bbq. Nice end to this day with family & friends after this Epic Storm Chasing Day!

Just to the east of North Platte Nebraska. Maxwell Nebraska...
A landspout touches down over a rural landscape under a dramatic sky, where the swirling column of wind is starkly visible against intense cloud formations. The foreground features a few trees and farmland, emphasizing the stark contrast between human activity and natural phenomena.
We were not set up & riding parallel with this storm.. so only a few shots eh...
For folks that don't know the difference between a tornado & a landspout... Please Read Below!
*****
What is the Difference between a Landspout & a Tornado?
A landspout and a tornado are both rotating columns of air that can cause damage, but they differ in their formation, structure, and characteristics:
Formation:
Landspout: A landspout is a type of non-supercell tornado that forms from a growing thunderstorm or cumulus cloud without a mesocyclone (a rotating updraft within a supercell). It typically develops from the ground upward when converging surface winds create a vortex that is stretched by an updraft in a developing storm.
Tornado: A tornado usually forms from a supercell thunderstorm with a mesocyclone. It descends from the cloud base downward as the mesocyclone tightens and intensifies due to strong atmospheric dynamics, such as wind shear.
Structure and Appearance:
Landspout: Landspouts are often narrower, more rope-like, and less organized than tornadoes. They typically appear as a slender, tube-like vortex extending from the cloud base to the ground, sometimes resembling a waterspout over land.
Tornado: Tornadoes are generally wider, more robust, and can take various shapes (e.g., wedge, cone, or rope). They are often associated with a visible funnel cloud and a debris cloud at the surface due to stronger winds.
Intensity and Duration:
Landspout: Landspouts are usually weaker (EF0–EF1 on the Enhanced Fujita scale) and shorter-lived, lasting a few minutes. They cause localized, less severe damage compared to tornadoes.
Tornado: Tornadoes can range from weak (EF0–EF1) to extremely violent (EF4–EF5), with some lasting over an hour. They can cause widespread, catastrophic damage due to higher wind speeds.
Associated Weather:
Landspout: Occurs in less severe weather, often under developing thunderstorms or cumulus clouds with minimal wind shear. They are not typically associated with large-scale storm systems.
Tornado: Often occurs in severe thunderstorms, especially supercells, with strong wind shear and dynamic atmospheric conditions conducive to powerful, long-lived storms.
Detection:
Landspout: Landspouts are harder to detect on radar because they lack a mesocyclone and may not produce a distinct radar signature.
Tornado: Tornadoes from supercells often show a mesocyclone signature on Doppler radar, aiding in their detection and warning issuance.
In summary, while both are rotating columns of air that contact the ground, landspouts are weaker, shorter-lived, and form without a mesocyclone under less severe conditions, whereas tornadoes are typically stronger, longer-lasting, and associated with supercell thunderstorms and mesocyclones.

Unpacked and gear out close to home as a non severe thunderstorm approached from the due south of Kearney Nebraska. Just on the outskirts of the city just to the east of Kearney High school .
A few pics that didn't make it to my Flickr Photostream in 2020. So I'm adding them now.
I do so much sky photography and at that time of year when I take these, they sometimes get lost within the fold. So at the end of each year I find a few that are worthy of being posted!

June was a tough month... Not only did I have my transmission go out on the truck. Their would be NO storm chasing for about 3 weeks. Of course its June and we did have few good storms pass though and I was disappointed that we couldn't go get em all.
Back in the saddle for this last June storm. Nice for almost end of season development. Under the base this storm no tornado was going to form due to it being undercut. Nice rotation in this cell though, and it was what we came for.

Right along side as I would eventually get south of the storm. It had more of a easterly movement than south. It was dying but still had some nice photographic view points!!!
Hwy 30 back to Kearney... and a good view of this dying LP thunderstorm. Fantastic Structure as her last moments before she would completely weaken and fade away. There is beauty in a dying thunderstorm... just have to know when and where to be to catch it!

Mid May 2026
We finally had our first bout of severe weather after a horrendous drought season. We welcome the rain but not the severe weather. But an actuality when severe weather approaches that's when I shine....
Day 2 of Severe weather events across Nebraska. My adult daughter by my side. She didn't want to miss out on this years severe weather events as her passion equals mine... She wasn't going to be disappointed this day!
We grabbed the gear and headed deep in Central Nebraska that afternoon. Long story short... We avoided the Chaser Convergence & planned it out perfectly.

Got off work late this night... and I was already tired from the night before. Severe storms came in about 3:30am and of course I wouldn't miss it for the world. Even if I had work @ 8am. Believe me when I say I was beet and tired just off a 10 hour shift. Though I'm a trooper when it comes to my dedication for severe storm photography I make every storm count. I did with this one!
With that being said this was a non severe storm that came into town about 10:30pm that evening. Super Slow mover only about 10mph moving due east. Shooting off incredible displays of forked cloud to cloud lightning. Especially when it moved right overhead! Probably the best display of cloud to cloud lighting of the year in South Central Nebraska. Some incredible captures in the set of images.

Finally a good setup for severe weather and were were on time for the event. Shortly after 4pm CDT were in the Moderate Risk area for that afternoon. Arapahoe Nebraska was our destination. Traveled a few miles south to get the best open position before the storms. Pointing the camers due southwest, this is were they were to develop and become severe.
Towers were already forming and were were under the first cells of the day. These would become the tornadic cells just north of Alma Nebraska that late afternoon.
As were were watching the severe storm to the southwest approach our location... This formed and went severe right behind our location.

Primed and Set for a new year of Chasing Severe Weather throughout Tornado Alley. This was close to home and not a huge jaunt across several states to find those severe storms. Instead this was just really a test run for the real thing coming soon to our neck of the woods.
Pulse storms forming over a marginal risk area for the afternoon. First of the year in fact so the possibility of a few severe storms were not out of the question.
All in all... It was good to get out and dust the cobwebs off the old dslr! Some nice views from North Central Kansas and South Central Nebraska that afternoon and evening!

On the open plains of Nebraska...
August was a GEM month for severe storm structure. Folks... I didn't miss a beat.
Pure Eye Candy this one is. Open air supercells developing right as the dry line passed over us in South Central Nebraska.
I wasn't going to get underneath this one though it was close. I could have chased it, but I wanted to get the structure that day. Oh I got what I came for!
I had planned accordingly. Knowing that the storm was going to pass as it rapidly developed to the due east. I waited for bit under the hail core before I got into position to capture this storm.
Building Billowing Beautiful updrafts on the back side of this storm were memorizing. Perfect Supercell structure.

I didn't have to wait very long for my first storm opportunity. Though this was not a severe storm and it was only one cell.
We had briefings from the weather service about possible non severe thunderstorms for that afternoon. I have been wanting to get out to get some cloud action and I wasn't going to get disappointed.

Another afternoon of severe weather and parts of Central and South Central Nebraska would be under the gun later that evening. Gear ready and packed we were off for another Severe Weather Adventure!
Though the storms we wanted to catch that afternoon decided to form and then weaken then form to our due north northwest again for the afternoon. Too far north for us to chase as they were developing and moving fast northwest.
Caught would we could for that afternoon and waited for the lightning fest that would be to the southeast and east of Kearney. No direct intercept this day... But mother nature was talking...

I didn't know this would be my last batch of lighting for 2017 at the time of these captures.
Yeah, I knew these season for storms were coming to an end. I even made several more attempts and failed before 2017 was over.
Fitting that I wouldn't have to travel far to have one last really good photographic night storm.

Late July in South Central Nebraska. This time of year, of course its our dry season, but we do get some photographic thunderstorm development in the early morning hours. Right before dawn, strong cells were developing... forming just south of the I-80 corridor.
Beautiful CC lightning covered the skies a few hours before the crack of dawn!!!

Good storm cells were developing just to my southwest around 3:00am Working... Had all my responsibilities done for the evening... Had my camera equipment in the truck from chasing that afternoon. Grabbed my camera, sandbag, and tripod and headed out to the back of the buildings.
Got a few good shots of the incoming shelf cloud. Wish I wasn't working. There was incredible structure further west that I could see. Can't complain though, I was at work, taking snaps of storms... I was a happy camper!

Was quite surprised to see storms develop out in the western part of Nebraska that day. The cold front had pushed into the state by early afternoon and severe storms were forming. Severe weather watches were posted for Dawson and Custer counties. Storms were moving at 10mph and I had plenty of time to catch up to them from Kearney.
Storm warnings for cells in western Dawson county promoted me to position myself to the south of Ansley. Found my favorite road called Box Elder and waited. Impressive Hail Core and developing shelf cloud was just to good to pass up!

Not many chase days in the month of June 2017, as this day turned out way better than expected. You never know what you might encounter on a decent moderate risk day which was mostly on the eastern side of Nebraska and Western Iowa.
These first cells were moving from the north to the south as I encountered them just to the east of Schuyler Nebraska. I didn't have to to travel to western Iowa as all the action stayed in eastern Nebraska that day. It was mostly an HP mess for most of the ride till then.
Some decent structure out in front of this cell, so you know I what I was doing!

Rare for Nebraska in November that is....
There was some risk of severe weather that afternoon. In fact.... way out of season severe weather. There was just enough instability by afternoon to allow the thunderstorms to develop, strengthen, and even spin up a few tornadoes in the 4-5 p.m. CST time frame.
I had a 5 hour drive back from Missouri and was exhausted. Plus I had to work in a few hours so chasing this storm was just not possible that afternoon. But I did venture out to capture a few snaps of that afternoons events.
Pictured here were the cells effecting the Red Cloud to Clay Center Nebraska areas. I was just to the south of the I-80 Minden Interchange. Found a cozy spot without any powerlines and pointed my camera to the east southeast.
Some amazing captures to finalize my severe weather photography for 2016

Another Incredible Nebraska Skyscape. Beautiful July ambient light, against a dying thunderstorm. Nope it's not severe but it's what I do when the light is right. Plus, I was super sick... A few days away from being forced into the hospital. I'm better now, and thankful.. that's a story to come!
I honestly took extra time on these captures. I was using a new filter on my new lens. So no added color or any adjustments to the image in Photoshop on this set. Now I had to bring them through Photoshop from raw... but that's it and of course the pano's are done separately.
Also... I only had one camera...for video that evening. Otherwise you would have seen this first storm cross over and you would have seen some sweet Nebraska thunderstorm views. Just to the east southeast. July Mammatus... these are just as sweet as this video... Just captures though...These have been added to this set.
It seemed the sicker I got, the better the photography I took... It was only about 10 days till I was forced into the hospital. I shouldn't have been out. But you don't get captures like this if you don't go try to catch them...
I was sick but had a blast, and what I caught was just Awesome!

These next 24 hours would very interesting. I was in the 100% Totality Zone for the solar eclipse the next day. So the camera was ready. Snagged it from the charger and I was off.
Had to work in about an hour. Of course I was waiting most of the afternoon for these storms to come closer and they eventually did...
A few wicked good lightning shots captured that evening!

Mid August of 2016, and we had our share of storms, there were some good ones. But I had fallen ill and this would be last that I would get a chance to photograph, at least for that month of 2016.
Strong thunderstorms were developing from the southwest and moving almost due north northeast. Utilizing the city lights to paint the sky, I was able to capture all of the cloud to cloud lightning illuminating the interior of the storm.

I had to take a few days off from that last storm... A few thousand miles of traveling just for a cloud... lol ... Now refreshed from a few days rest... Moderate Risk Day... and It was dead center in my back yard. June in Nebraska is really what I wait for each year... The most violent of storms are always this window of time.
A few thousand chasers, DOWs (Doppler on Wheels), and several chase teams from all over the country...all merged into a tight area for the development of strong cells for that afternoon. Which would turn into early evening before any of the action would start.

Reminiscing, I haven't spent this many times in this location in years past. Its been the 2016 hot spot for severe storms to cross over from northern Kansas into south central Nebraska in 2016. Again I was there to capture these severe weather moments.
Its mid August and its late season for severe storms. We are in a drought and any rain helps as we get closer to harvest time. This was a beast storm. HP all the way, and I didn't get many captures from this storm but what I did get was something special.
Now just east of Red Cloud Nebraska and I was eastbound on Hwy 136.
Paused a few moments to get the radar check and to figure out if the storm behind me was going to overtake my position before I got further to the east.

Our first non severe thunderstorms of the 2016 season.
I've been itching to get out to capture some Nebraska stormscapes. I was totally satisfied with that afternoons storm front that passed through about 6:30pm.
Not bad for my first batch of storm captures 2016!
