I had grand hopes of a nice sunset for the birthday eve BBQ. It didn't happen though as there were too many clouds when the sun went down :( I did though get a chance to play with my GNDs. This photo has both a 3stop hard and a 2stop soft on it.

Sometimes one has to take a longer perspective.
First, in naivete, I used to think large areas of forestry covering the landscape were beautiful, like a fir coat draped over the hills.
Accordingly, nobody likes to see hillsides denuded of their cover.
Now I know much better: monoculture is the enemy of biodiversity.
Those thoughts stuck in the brain for a few years until I discovered this area, the first place where I saw a noticeboard explaining that the hillside was going to be left for natural regeneration of native species instead of sitka spruce.
So this waste landscape is just the start of hopefully good things.

I spent a wonderful day with my son visiting west Wales and learning about woodland management and conservation there. The majestic trees were inspiring, like being in a natural cathedral. I felt it was difficult to do them justice in a photo but the scenes were beautiful in the warm late-summer afternoon light.
It was fascinating to hear about the traditional (and now scientifically supported) forestry techniques including the benefits of mixing new and old (and even dead) trees of different species together to maintain a self-sustaining forest environment with valuable mammal, bird, insect and fungus populations in balance.
