PRESIDIO OF MONTEREY, California -- The 2018 Language Day celebration was held by the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center at the Presidio of Monterey, May 11. Language Day is open to the public and attended by schools across the nation to promote an understanding of diverse customs and cultures from around the world. Approximately 6,000 people attended this annual event featuring cultural displays, activities and international ethnic cuisine served by local vendors.

Foxtrot Company, 229th Military Intelligence Bn., brought the SPCA of Monterey County "Hug a Pet" team and a hot dog lunch to Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center students and staff at the to Presidio of Monterey's Hilltop Track Nov. 9, 2016. Three dogs adopted from the shelter, two certified therapy dogs, and Pfc. Lingo - the school's mascot - spread "puppy love" to raise morale for service members, many of whom live in the barracks where they are not allowed to care for pets while completing military language training at the school. The Birmingham Public Library has lots of resources to help you learn foreign languages and sign languages, from books to DVDs, and the Mango Language software. On March 21 the Springville Road Regional Branch Library kicked off its inaugural session of You've Got To Use It Or Lose It – Conversations in Other Languages. Patrons registered to practice Portuguese, French, German, Spanish, and American Sign Language. The workshop is also a great opportunity for English as a Second Language (ESL) speakers to practice conversation.

2nd Lt. James M's son, Donimic, pins him after he took the commissioning oath during a small ceremony at the Foreign Language Center Dec. 30. The former staff sergeant has assisted the language center faculty in developing the curriculum for language-enabled Soldiers and has played a key role as a contact between the school and the brigades as the Soldiers are trained prior to deployments.
