Maybe two dozen languages are shown in the wall niche space of the covered entry to the Grand Rapids Public Museum. Green, orange, and blue painted base colors make a cheerful backdrop for the bright white of the phrase "be curious" displayed in a different order on each of the niches.
Many of the languages represented use non-alphabetic forms of notation. So perhaps the basis for choosing which ones to display was visual variety, rather than national population size or city refugees resettled nearby, for example. Although the designers may have intended no ill will, when one person's culture and language is featured, but another's is excluded then some dissatisfaction may be kindled. Such finite resources as wall space can be the source of conflict that contributes to cultural politics.

The Birmingham Public Library has lots of resources to help you learn foreign languages and sign languages, from books to DVDs, and the Mango Language software. On March 21 the Springville Road Regional Branch Library kicked off its inaugural session of You've Got To Use It Or Lose It – Conversations in Other Languages. Patrons registered to practice Portuguese, French, German, Spanish, and American Sign Language. The workshop is also a great opportunity for English as a Second Language (ESL) speakers to practice conversation.
(Kelly Laney, librarian in the Sringville Road Library's Adult Department, instructs the class on the Mango Languages database.)
