PACIFIC GROVE, Calif. - Service members from the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center once again led the parade at the 54th Annual Good Old Days, held in Pacific Grove on April 9-10. Monterey County’s largest arts and crafts show, Good Old Days featured over 225 art and food vendors in downtown Pacific Grove, live entertainment, old-fashioned games and contests, as well as the parade. An estimated 30,000 people attend the 2-day event making it Pacific Grove's largest attraction of the year.

I so rarely go to the central library and then never bother going to the foreign language section, so when I find myself back in that area for one reason or another, I'm always happy to rediscover the decor.

PRESIDIO OF MONTEREY, Calif. - A retirement ceremony attended by more than 250 faculty, staff, and distinguished guests was held for the provost of the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center, Dr. Donald Fischer, inside the Presidio's Tin Barn on Dec. 20. Fischer also served as DLIFLC commandant from 1989 to 1993 and is credited for placing a heavy emphasis on technology in the classrooms and in the hands of students and faculty.

PRESIDIO OF MONTEREY, Calif. - For the first time in more than a decade, the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center opened its doors to the local community for its annual Language Day celebration.

 

Held May 11, on the open grounds of historic Soldier Field and surrounding classrooms, Language Day was a colorful celebration of foreign languages and cultural education highlighting the 26 different languages taught to military personnel at the Presidio of Monterey.

The printing plants of early Dakota newspapers were slow, but portable. Skilled typesetters put metal letters into a composing stick, and then placed the set lines of type in galleys, from which proofs were made. After proof reading and corrections, each page was made up and locked into a form. The printer rolled ink over the form, put a piece of paper on top, and pulled down the lever to print one side.

PRESIDIO OF MONTEREY, Calif. -- Official U.S. Army Special Operations Command Parachute Demonstration Team, the Black Daggers, dropped in to Presidio's Soldier Field on Nov. 4 during the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center's 75th Anniversary Week celebrations. The team carried a special gift on their 6,000 foot jump, delivering a scroll announcing the award of the Joint Meritorious Unit Award to DLIFLC Commandant Col. Phillip J. Deppert. Students from the Presidio's military service units were on hand to witness the spectacle after spending the day participating in a Sports Day competition.

PCC's University Transfer and Foreign Languages Department sponsored a multilingual Christmas sing-a-long on campus Thursday. The program, which took place in the lobby of the Craig F. Goess Student Center, featured a number of foreign language students and faculty singing various Christmas songs in English, American Sign Language, Spanish and French.

PreK through 9th Grade International school including Foreign Languages and Music instruction with a 6:1 student to teacher ratio.

Guests at the Brazilian Film Week opening night, which took place at The Centre for Language Learning (CLL) of The University of the West Indies (UWI), St Augustine Campus from Wednesday 30th September to Sunday 4th October, 2009. The Film Week showcased the creative wealth of the Brazilian film industry, and provided interested persons with exposure to Brazilian culture and lifestyle and language. PHOTO BY ANEEL KARIM.
