Skilled typesetters put metal letters into a composing stick, and then placed the set lines of type in galleys, from which proofs were made. After proof reading and corrections, each page was made up and locked into a form. The printer rolled ink over the form, put a piece of paper on top, and pulled down the lever to print one side.
