Here are the lyrics of a song of Nana Mouskouri, a famous international singer, on the melody of "the choir of the slaves", Nabucco, Verdi. (The English version is a little different from the French one...) For Ukraine and the world... with my "Peace Rose".

"Song for Liberty"

When you sing I'm singing with you Liberty

When you cry I cry with you in sorrow

When you suffer I'm praying for you Liberty

For your struggles will bring us a new tomorrow

Days of sad darkness and fear must one day crumble

For the forces of your kindness and love make them tremble

When you sing I'm singing with you Liberty

In the void of your absence I keep searching for you

Who are you dream illusion or just reality

Faith ideal desire revolution

I believe you're the symbol of our Humanity

Lighting up the world for Eternity

I can see when men die to defend you

Try to guard to protect and attend you

When you sing I'm singing with you Liberty

With your tears or your joys I love you

Let us sing and rejoice make our own History

Songs of Hope with one voice guide us to Victory

Something is going wrong when the camera with its impressive algorithms and countless AF options forces itself into the centre and, hence, between photographer and object. Ideally, I would think, we photographers ought to use the camera as if it was not there. Just focussing on the composition and the 'essence' of the object and having the settings run in the background. I am not advocating 'point and shoot', I am saying that a camera should be built in such a way that we can 'forget' about it and focus on taking the picture. I think my older cameras do that. My newer ones are much more sophisticated and what they are increasingly trying to do is take over decisions I could make myself. What is my reaction? Number one, I prefer using my older cameras. And two, when using my sophisticated ones, I turn off a lot of their computer-powered procedures. I wonder what you think.

Why spider webs glisten with dew

Two driving forces acting on wet spider silk help it to capture water.

Researchers have puzzled out how spider silk is able to catch the morning dew. Their findings may lead to the development of new materials that are able to capture water from the air.

The study, published today in Nature1, examines the silk of the hackled orbweaver spider Uloborus walckenaerius. "Bright, pearl-like water drops hang on thin spider silk in the morning after fogging," says study author Lei Jiang from the Beijing National Laboratory for Molecular Sciences. "It is unexpected and interesting. Human hair can't do that."

Dry spider silk forms a necklace-like structure. Two main fibres support a series of separate rounded 'puffs', each made up of tiny, randomly intertwined nanofibrils. When water vapour condenses onto these puffs, they shrink into densely packed knots, shaped like spindles (or two cones with their bases stuck together). Thinner connecting stretches of nanofibrils, separating the knots, become more apparent; these areas are called 'joints'.

The researchers studied the webs under both electron and light microscopes. They noticed that as water condenses on the web, droplets move towards the nearest spindle-knot, where they coalesce to form larger drops.

The spindle-knots have a rough surface, because the fibrils within them are randomly interweaved. But the joints between the knots have a smooth texture, because their constituent fibrils run parallel to each other. It is this difference in roughness that helps water drops to slide towards the spindle-knots, sticking when they arrive.

The cone shape of the spindle-knots also drives droplets towards their centre. Once they hit the edge of a cone, drops are propelled towards its base, the least curved region, because of the pressure difference caused by surface tension.

Mimicking nature

Guided by their findings, the team made their own artificial spider silk using nylon fibres dipped in a polymer solution that, when dried, formed spindle-knots similar to those in natural spider silk. They anticipate that their studies of these fibres could lead to new materials for collecting water from the air.

"It is impressive that they were able to produce an analogue of wetted [spider] thread that duplicated the properties that they observed," says spider silk expert Brent Opell of Virginia Tech in Blacksburg.

But it doesn't seem likely that natural selection has directed the evolution of this particular spider's silk for water collection, he adds. The spider's thread seems to have evolved to work best when it is dr

Perhaps helpful information for users of the Canon 1D series APS-H format cameras:

For some of Canons more modern EF-S lenses there are replacement EF mounts available to buy. The DIY mount conversion is easy, as there are only 6 small screws (4 for the bayonet; 2 for the contacts) holding the EF-S bayonet.

Additional advantage is the now metal mount, as there was always criticism for the plastic lens mounts.

I have successfully converted following EF-s lenses to EF mount:

Canon EF-S 10–18mm f/4.5–5.6 IS STM (covers APS-H from ~12mm and even full frame from 14mm upwards)

Canon EF-S 18–55mm f/3.5–5.6 IS STM (covers APS-H from ~22mm)

Canon EF-S 55–250mm f/4–5.6 IS STM (covers APS-H at all focal lengths)

This boardwalk used to lead you to another walking trail at Mission Marsh Conservation area. A severe storm hit the area in 2019, heavy winds and rain knocked over trees. It destroyed part of the boardwalk. They had to decide whether to whether to remove the whole boardwalk. They decided not to replace the damaged area and blocked the boardwalk off.

In Flanders Fields by John Mccrea

In Flanders fields the poppies blow

Between the crosses, row on row,

That mark our place; and in the sky

The larks, still bravely singing, fly

Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago

We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,

Loved and were loved, and now we lie,

In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:

To you from failing hands we throw

The torch; be yours to hold it high.

If ye break faith with us who die

We shall not sleep, though poppies grow

In Flanders fields.

The theme for “Smile on Saturday” for November 9th is “poppies”, in honour of Armistice Day and Veterans Day, both of which are celebrated on the 11th of November every year. This red poppy I actually photographed in the St Kilda Botanical Gardens in Melbourne a year ago, when whilst I visited there, I came across beds full of beautiful poppies in all kinds of colours. I hope you like my choice for this week’s theme, and that it makes you smile, and that it helps you reflect and remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our peace, prosperity and stability, and those who fight today to protect us still. Let us also hope that conflicts around the world will come to a swift conclusion, not least of all in Ukraine and in Gaza.

Armistice Day or Remembrance Day is a memorial day observed in Commonwealth member states since the end of the First World War to honour armed forces members who have died in the line of duty. It falls on the 11th of November every year. Remembrance Day is marked at eleven o’clock (the time that the armistice was declared) with a minute’s silence to honour the fallen. Following a tradition inaugurated by King George V in 1919, the day is also marked by war remembrances in many non-Commonwealth countries.

Veterans Day is a federal holiday in the United States observed annually on November the 11th, for honouring military veterans of the United States Armed Forces.

Was inspired by some of Robert’s Vietnam figs with shrubs covering their backs. Tried it with wookies but it wasn’t a good look, so I went with some normal figs for the technique. Tried to evoke feelings from the Battle of Endor and the big ewok battle. Hope it worked!

Good to see the British armed forces with the cultural diversity .

Actually managed a day out with my camera today, and had the chance to tick 2 locations off my ever-growing bucket list. This beautiful old abandoned church really tickled me, with the oak tree growing up through the middle. Unfortunately we were plagued with very harsh sunlight today, so a return trip is on the cards....;-)

Playing with forces

Life is a game of forces. Of balancing

all forces to be able to achieve my goals.

What kind of forces are working with me? What are

Their origins? I keep finding deferent forces

and I learn how to live with them, use them

or resist them.

But this ability comes from another force –

my inner force.

And if I want to shift or change this inner force

of mine, where can I get the strength for it?

A classic from a well known location in the Faroe Islands - Múlafossur waterfall and the village of Gásadalur on Vágar. We could not complete the trip without stopping by this location and taking a photo or two. We saved it for the last evening of the trip and were rewarded with great and interesting conditions. The muted glow of the sun spreading through low clouds was fantastic.

Pre-Cristobal cloud cover heading in this morning. It is actually pretty dry in our area, but I'm not sure we needed a hurricane to remedy that-a nice shower or two would have been just fine! LOL

The power of nature. Taken during an early morning at this waterfall after an all night rainshower. It rained so badly that I didn't put up my tent but slept in the car ;-)
