Why spider webs glisten with dew
Two driving forces acting on wet spider silk help it to capture water.

Researchers have puzzled out how spider silk is able to catch the morning dew. Their findings may lead to the development of new materials that are able to capture water from the air.
The study, published today in Nature1, examines the silk of the hackled orbweaver spider Uloborus walckenaerius. "Bright, pearl-like water drops hang on thin spider silk in the morning after fogging," says study author Lei Jiang from the Beijing National Laboratory for Molecular Sciences. "It is unexpected and interesting. Human hair can't do that."
Dry spider silk forms a necklace-like structure. Two main fibres support a series of separate rounded 'puffs', each made up of tiny, randomly intertwined nanofibrils. When water vapour condenses onto these puffs, they shrink into densely packed knots, shaped like spindles (or two cones with their bases stuck together). Thinner connecting stretches of nanofibrils, separating the knots, become more apparent; these areas are called 'joints'.
The researchers studied the webs under both electron and light microscopes. They noticed that as water condenses on the web, droplets move towards the nearest spindle-knot, where they coalesce to form larger drops.
The spindle-knots have a rough surface, because the fibrils within them are randomly interweaved. But the joints between the knots have a smooth texture, because their constituent fibrils run parallel to each other. It is this difference in roughness that helps water drops to slide towards the spindle-knots, sticking when they arrive.
The cone shape of the spindle-knots also drives droplets towards their centre. Once they hit the edge of a cone, drops are propelled towards its base, the least curved region, because of the pressure difference caused by surface tension.
Mimicking nature
Guided by their findings, the team made their own artificial spider silk using nylon fibres dipped in a polymer solution that, when dried, formed spindle-knots similar to those in natural spider silk. They anticipate that their studies of these fibres could lead to new materials for collecting water from the air.
"It is impressive that they were able to produce an analogue of wetted [spider] thread that duplicated the properties that they observed," says spider silk expert Brent Opell of Virginia Tech in Blacksburg.
But it doesn't seem likely that natural selection has directed the evolution of this particular spider's silk for water collection, he adds. The spider's thread seems to have evolved to work best when it is dr

Perhaps helpful information for users of the Canon 1D series APS-H format cameras:
For some of Canons more modern EF-S lenses there are replacement EF mounts available to buy. The DIY mount conversion is easy, as there are only 6 small screws (4 for the bayonet; 2 for the contacts) holding the EF-S bayonet.
Additional advantage is the now metal mount, as there was always criticism for the plastic lens mounts.
I have successfully converted following EF-s lenses to EF mount:
Canon EF-S 10â18mm f/4.5â5.6 IS STM (covers APS-H from ~12mm and even full frame from 14mm upwards)
Canon EF-S 18â55mm f/3.5â5.6 IS STM (covers APS-H from ~22mm)
Canon EF-S 55â250mm f/4â5.6 IS STM (covers APS-H at all focal lengths)
The Thurisaz rune (áŠ) represents the ability to confront obstacles, the strength to endure adversity, and the protection of mighty forces. Like the thorn it symbolizes, this rune reminds you that true strength lies not just in attack, but in defense and resilience. It suggests that you have the inner fortitude to face any challenge that stands in your way, urging you to stand firm and embrace your power.
Thurisaz is a rune of both conflict and transformation, showing that through struggle, growth is achieved. It calls on you to harness your inner strength wisely, channeling your energy to break through barriers and drive positive change. More than just a force of destruction, Thurisaz is a guardianâits presence in your path signifies that you are not alone, as unseen forces shield and guide you. Whether in battle, personal trials, or major life transitions, this rune is a reminder that your resilience is your greatest weapon, and through perseverance, victory is within reach.
"Thurisaz is the force that breaks and the strength that enduresâembrace the storm, for it forges the warrior within."

Actually managed a day out with my camera today, and had the chance to tick 2 locations off my ever-growing bucket list. This beautiful old abandoned church really tickled me, with the oak tree growing up through the middle. Unfortunately we were plagued with very harsh sunlight today, so a return trip is on the cards....;-)

Gale forces ravage Lake Michigan two days after
the 40th anniversary of the SS Edmund Fitzgerald
I had read that while the Edmund Fitzgerald was being loaded with taconite pellets in Wisconsin the storm that sank her was gaining strength over Kansas. From what I understand this storm did the same thing. Considering that, and that meteorologists were projecting the chance of twenty foot waves I didn't want to chance missing such a huge storm and made the trip south to the beach of my youth. The waves fell short of the predictions but was a spectacular event nonetheless.

Armed Forces Day Observed on the third Saturday every May, this is a day dedicated to paying tribute to those currently serving in the U.S. Armed Forces.
A classic from a well known location in the Faroe Islands - MĂșlafossur waterfall and the village of GĂĄsadalur on VĂĄgar. We could not complete the trip without stopping by this location and taking a photo or two. We saved it for the last evening of the trip and were rewarded with great and interesting conditions. The muted glow of the sun spreading through low clouds was fantastic.
