Some stores have/had really simple car order systems with nothing more than a short strip of rollers at the front of the store. Ex-A&P store #386 was different, and it's system rivalled those of some Steinberg's locations, especially in Montreal, with their parcel pickup zones in the middle of the parking lot. Only the old Dominion at St-Laurent Mall was the only place in Ottawa like that. A roller section of the upper & lower two old car order/parcel pickup/commande à l'auto conveyor belts at ex-A&P store #386. This is near the point at which there was a 50m long straightaway section of belt. The store closed in November 2005, but the car order operation was shut down 10 years prior to the store's closing in 1995 as evidenced by the junk on the rollers...the grocery chains were sadly shuttering them en-masse in the mid-1990s. I wonder if more of them would still be in use today were Steinberg's still around.

Back in the heyday of stores in Ontario & Quebec having a car order service, several of them had two conveyors - with one to send out customers' orders and the other to return empty bins back to the cash registers. This store was rather unique in that both belts were used to transport customers' orders out to the parcel pickup room, which was located in west corner of the store by the truck receiving doors. The reason for this is that the mall entrance was midway down the length of the store's entrance and there were 6 cash registers on either side, each with their own car order conveyor. Therefore, when the cashiers need more empty bins, the direction of 1 of the 2 belts would be reversed to return empties. After the store closed, the conveyors were removed and the old parcel pickup drive-thru doors are all that remains of the car order operation. Today the store is Food Basics store #870.

Aldi - Frankfurt

This is Aldi-South, little different from Aldi North. The two operate independently, each within specific areas. Aldi Nord is owner of the Trader Joe's chain while Aldi Süd operates as Aldi.

Aldi-South store is bigger and has a wider selection.

I was in that store short before closing time (8PM) and it looks a bit chaotic and some items are almost sold out. Aldi has limited number of workers, who perform several jobs at the store. It is cleaned up and filled with ware during the day, when they have time, and the rest is done after the store is closed. This is a pretty busy location, though...

Even I only used this transport interchange for maybe 1 or 2 times when I was a kid, the unique spatial arrangement of the complex still evolved from my memory when I re-visited and entered the fenced off, narrow queue of the terminus.

Construction started in 1983, with the multi-storey car park opened in April 1986. The Transport Complex connected to the pier with ferry services serving mainly between Tsuen Wan and Central. The Complex provides passage interchanges to the bus, van and taxi services directly from the pier. The building programmes also included government departments (e.g. Identical Card issue), and other retail booths & food stores. The building has however been disconnected to the central Tsuen Wan areas since the Tsuen Wan MTR service operated even before the completion of the building. The ferry service was closed in 2000 due to the more convenient use of road transport from Tsuen Wan to Central through the West Cross Harbour Tunnel, causing the Complex to be further under-used.

The use of individual staircase connecting to each of the bus stop termini was first used in this building - an unique machine-like design to avoid large loads of pedestrians to cross the bus platforms for safety reason.

The most interesting moment of the building was the establishment of a driving school on the 9th and 10th floors of the building since 1999.

Most of the bus routes using the Complex have relocated their termini to Tsuen Wan West Station Public Transport Interchange in 2003, and left a larger area of the building into disuse. Under the MTR Corporation's TW5 property development project, the carpark Complex is planned to be closed from 5 Feb 2013 and will be demolished and replaced by residential towers.

The ex-car order room with the end of line for the conveyor that used to serve the left-side cashiers. You can see that it turned into a storage room for junk and broken shopping carts.

Apt time to move on

IN OTHER cafe news, Alphington's APTE, recently named Delicious magazine's cafe of the year in a popular vote, has been sold. Nathan Toleman, who with his wife Sarah Foletta opened the former milkbar three years ago, said the couple would be handing over the reins at the end of the week to an unnamed buyer new to hospitality.

The pair has another project on the boil, a cafe that will be similar to APTE, this time on the Carlton/Brunswick border. They hope to open around July.

These are the last images I have of the Ancaster collection sent from Mansell Beard (Ancaster) which show the demolition of the A.C Wiiliams site back in 2015.

AC Williams were a long established business in Ancaster with other branches in Sleaford and Grantham but sadly went into liquidation back in 2011.

Although the AC Williams sister company (AC Williams Coaches) were saved, sadly the car dealer and petrol station did not survive.

During the 1990's this was a Fina petrol station, this would rebrand to Rix which would be the last fuel brand sold.

Chris has a photo of a branch in Stamford although this site went several years before, this is now a housing development.

Today this site is now a Co-op foodstore.

This Co-op has followed the expected branding over recent years from Shell to Total and on to own brand here. In the early Streetview we see the store was branded as a Co-op Rainbow Foodstore which I have seen in a couple of other places but it's a name that has disappeared now. It's actually a very hard forecourt to photograph depending on where the sun is so I had to find some angles where it didn't interfere.

Owner Retiring, Selling Freshline Foods In Oak Lawn

Beloved family-owned grocery store closing after 47 years in Oak Lawn.

Owner Retiring, Selling Freshline Foods In Oak Lawn

OAK LAWN, IL --

After 47 years of serving the Oak Lawn community, the owner of Freshline Foods is retiring and selling the grocery store. John Siakotos announced he would be selling the family-owned business in a letter to customers on the store's website.

"We are beyond grateful for your loyal business and support throughout the decades. It has been a pleasure to serve you all."

The Skiatos family first opened the grocery store at 5355 W. 95th St. under the name Freshline Certified, a retailers cooperative serving independently owned grocery stores, in 1971. Operating now under the name Freshline Foods, the store employs approximately 60 people.

Siakotos said the store would remain open and continue business as usual until all inventory is cleared from the stores shelves. In the meantime, customers will receive 30 percent off their grocery purchases until the store closes. The owner did not indicate a closing date or if there were any interested buyers.

"Our commitment to providing you with the highest quality products and friendly service is still our top priority … We look forward to seeing each of you in the store these final weeks to thank you personally."

A few weeks after the store closed it was announced that Pete's Fresh Market would be moving in.

Update: 2023. The land is for sale at the present time. The deal to built Pete's Fresh Market fell through.

The lower of the two old car order/parcel pickup/commande à l'auto conveyor belts at ex-A&P store #386. This is the point at which the 50m long straightaway section of belt started. It switched from electric powered rollers on a curved section, that then brought the bins from another straightaway belt that transported them up from the rollers at the right-side cash registers. One common trait amongst many original Dominion stores from the 1970s & early 80s (this store opened in 1981), was that the rollers in front of the cashiers were powered, meaning the cashiers didn't have to give the bins a push on manual rollers to get them started down the conveyor. The Dominion at St-Laurent in Ottawa was also like this, while the Dominion at Merivale (today a Farm Boy) was only rollers, where they were powered in the store then as bins entered the car order room there were unpowered rollers where gravity & momentum took over.

The store closed in November 2005, but the car order operation was shut down 10 years prior to the store's closing or in 1995...the grocery chains were sadly shuttering them en-masse in the mid-1990s. I wonder if more of them would still be in use today were Steinberg's still around.

Looking toward Central Way, the Colin Sykes Foodstore can be seen to the left. In shot is the 82A Runcorn Murdishaw---Liverpool City Centre Bus. This isn't limited stop, making it one of the longest bus routes that I know of in Merseyside. Calling at Runcorn Village, Widnes, Hough Green, Hale, Airport, Speke, Garston and Toxteth, it most certainly takes in the sights of former South West Lancashire!

The service industry is an important employer in the city. The city centre is one of the main shopping areas, with the pedestrianised Cruises St being one of the main shopping streets and also the recently pedestrianised Bedford Row. New on the agenda is the proposed pedestranisation of O'Connell St up to Roches St near the Oriental Foodstore and a new look for William St, the heart of Limerick City. Each side of the city has outlying shopping areas. Crescent Shopping Centre is in Dooradoyle, not far from the city centre. It has over 90 shopping outlets along with restaurants and the 12-screen Omniplex Cinema. Regular bus services run from the city centre to the Crescent Shopping Centre. The Jetland Shopping Centre is in Caherdavin. It opened in 2005. Its main anchor is Dunnes Stores, with other shops and services including Golden Discs and Costa Coffee

The Milk Market located at Cornmarket Row in the city centre sells locally produced foods and products. The market is run by the Limerick Market Trustees and is one of the oldest markets run in the country. The market is open on Friday, Saturday and Sunday with the Saturday market acting as the flagship and most popular market day. In 2010 work was undertaken to redevelop the existing market premises to an all – weather, all year round market facility as the market operated in an outdoor environment. The work involved constructing a large canopy over the existing market premises and was officially re-opened in June 2010.

PLANS for a £26M revamp of the run-down Whitebirk Retail Park on the Hyndburn-Blackburn boundary have been revived.

Site owners Peel Holdings say the scheme could attract four top retailers - Next, Boots, Asda and Arcadia - and lead to the creation of around 500 jobs.

A similar scheme was turned down by Hyndburn Council's Planning Committee last year amid fears that it could lure shoppers away from Accrington town centre.

But now Peel Holdings is ready to try again and has resubmitted a planning application to "radically improve and refurbish" the retail park.

The plan would transform its layout and appearance but not increase the overall size. It would include the removal of overhead electricity pylons, high-quality landscaping and improved vehicle access.

And negotiations have already begun to set up a bus link with Accrington town centre in the hope of encouraging shoppers to spend money at both destinations.

But planning approval is needed for the partial removal of the "bulky goods" restriction on the site, which would allow new stores to operate alongside existing retailers such as MFI and Currys.

Gareth Finch, property manager at Peel Holdings, said: "This is an exciting opportunity to bring investment, jobs and improved shopping choice to Hyndburn.

Accrington Observer 090306

DEVELOPER Peel Group have been accused of a new bid to change its Whitebirk retail park near Rishton into a general out-of-town shopping centre 'through the back door'.

In August 2014 Britain's top judges threw out a legal attempt by the firm to change it into a £16 million shopping complex with food and fashion retailers.

The UK Supreme Court decision ended a ten-year battle with Hyndburn and Blackburn with Darwen Councils and local retailers.

The Whitebirk site currently only has planning permission to sell bulky, home improvement and electrical goods.

Now Peel has submitted a new planning application to Hyndburn Council to build an discount foodstore there.

Preliminary advice from borough planning officials suggests approval.

Gentlemen -- Are you having fun and thoroughly enjoying the tenth hour of your Solo Vegas Vacation? Good! So now, what do you think of your first close look at the fabulous and expansive Eataly Italian Marketplace & Food Hall? This massive Italian food court was still under construction last Spring when you and your very lovely lady were vacationing on the Las Vegas Strip. You and your very lovely lady really enjoyed staying here in 2015 and 2016 when it was the Monte Carlo Hotel & Casino, so how well do you like this place now in 2019 as the Park MGM?

I think it's safe to say that the boys and I have developed a minor addiction to these Yasso bars. When they go on sale, I stock up! Still, I'm pretty sure these will be gone within a week.
