The store on the left opened as a Jewel in 1981, and included a glass bottle return by the customer service desk. The opening of a large discount grocery store owned by Dominick's (I think the name was Omni?) a half mile away caused the Jewel to close, as did a couple of other grocery stores that subsequently occupied that space.
Finally, hope! A Walmart Neighborhood Market opened, and closed a few years later. It's been vacant ever since. A Marshall's, which was in the space on the right, soldiered on as the only tenant, until it, too, closed.
The current tenants: a blood bank and a wholesale sportswear shop.
This is a beautiful little store, presumably a food store, with nice stone work, and the "End Entry" with canopy.
Any help identifying this building's original use would be appreciated.
So much color on Chinatown signage! This one is for the Kwong Cheong Tai foodstore on Stockton Street. Taken on our Wok Wiz Chinatown tour.
Now this is cause for celebration: an oasis in a southside food desert! My go-to store -- it's within walking and biking distance, and easy to get to on public transportation. Their success is assured -- there is no other full-service grocery store within 3 miles of this corner. And no, I do NOT consider Aldi full-service.
