The Ferry Building Marketplace is a people's marketplace serving residents and travelers alike. Located within the historic Ferry Building at the foot of Market Street, shops large and small celebrate food in all its forms, offering everything from artisan cheeses to the freshest of local fish.
By July 2010 the frameworks were being erected for the new Wickes' DIY store and a discount foodstore on the former Brick & Tile factory site.
On target for completion by the end of the year.

With signs in both German and Arabic, this market was one of many near our hotel (and the Munich train station) that reflect the dynamics of cultural change in Europe.
Kris and I went to Young Harris College in Young Harris, Georgia for a work-related meeting. This is an abandoned Car Wash we passed along the way.

The old Hy-Vee food store in Liberty has been vacated for some new digs, and Feldman's Farm & Home is in the former Hy-Vee building.
In the bing.com view, the old Hy-Vee is the light roofed building, bottom right, facing north. The new Hy-Vee is located where we see only site work being done.
And the black roofed building, near center, is the former Food Barn grocery, now Crowley Furniture, featured here: www.flickr.com/photos/darrell_james/sets/72157622597034747/

This is one charming little grocery store. Sadly, it appears to have closed just recently.

Many retail stores in city centers are vacant due to various factors that have changed the retail landscape in recent years. Some of these factors are:
- The economic recession that has reduced consumer spending and disposable income, leading to lower demand for non-essential goods and services.
- The rise of online shopping that has offered more convenience, variety and lower prices to customers, making physical stores less attractive and competitive.
- The oversupply of retail space that has resulted from previous expansion plans, creating a mismatch between supply and demand and driving up vacancy rates.
- The structural change in the retail sector that has seen some sub-sectors decline (e.g. fashion, household, department stores) while others grow (e.g. leisure, essential, value, foodstores), requiring a repositioning and diversification of shopping centers to remain relevant.
These factors have affected different cities in different ways, depending on their size, location, demographics, infrastructure and attractiveness. Some cities have managed to adapt and reinvent themselves, while others have struggled to cope with the challenges and opportunities of the changing retail environment.

Three Bridges Parade, Gales Place. The building at the end (behind the green van) was a pub, and is now a snazzy restaurant.
Recorded one quiet sunday afternoon. Most of the shop fronts have been modified by their owners over the years, leaving only hints of the former 1950s glory behind (uploading soon). All the same, the presence of a 'Mace' foodstore is something of a throwback, even though it's probably just a revival of an old and very familiar name.
Many of the flats above however, are just as they were, with all their old Crittall windows in place. The pseudo-bay windows are rather unusual in this design.
You might also call this photo 'Optimism', because if they'd known what was coming, I'm not sure if they would have bothered with the sandbags. The shop on the right did the smart thing, and cleared out all their stock. The Foodstore on the left did not, and the scene after the water had receded says it all.
This photo shows the same shop (from a different position - just to the right of this frame) the next morning, when the water was still rising. It got about twice as high as in that photo.
