Dry clean your suit and tie, polish your dress shoes and update your resume. You do own a suit, tie and dress shoes, right?

And that suit thing goes for men and women. Women, a modest blouse and low-heeled pumps in place of the shirt, tie and dress shoes, please.

Co-operative foodstore, Westgate, 2013

Well, here's the A&P that I photographed just prior to Hurricane Irene. This area was under several feet of water, and the stores in this mall got flooded again. Restoration work had already begun in many of the stores. There are dumpsters everywhere. I saw walls being ripped out in some stores.

From what I understand, they built a sandbag dam with a plastic liner core against the buildings. I don't know if it worked (at all, slightly, or completely), but it's obvious some water got into the store. How much, I don't know, but restoration work is already underway.

Where I'm standing was under about 2-3 feet of water just two days ago.

Eco-friendly Midlands Co-op supermarket at Oakham, Rutland- they harvest rainwater, use special refidgeration units which use a lot less power (and use the by-product heat to warm the building), gross grass on the roof to insulate, use computer controlled ventilation (all natural where possible), even the lighting is automatic and only operates when needed (computers monitor light levels and open/close blinds on the windows where needed).

Both Wendy and Neil's business stems from their own dietary restrictions, and having spent years struggling to accommodate their respective food allergies and intolerances. This was the best of the best in their findings. Really nice to know that there's no longer a need to run around the city for these products. The fact that they're great tasting and that the store is allergen free is also incredible. Sensitive tummies rejoice.

World Knit in Public Day today.

Another thing I've noticed on my travels around the North East of England is how few traditional "British" green grocers there are on highstreets today. Luckily however, continental and Asian foodstores in the North East are managing to keep alive the small independent fresh fruit and veg trade on our local highstreets. In multicultural Arthur's Hill for example the highstreet is lined with huge wholesale fruit and veg shops, whereas in the less multicultural Gosforth two large supermarket retailers are the only regular sources of fresh fruit and veg on the highstreet (besides the visiting fortnightly farmer's market). I was also interested to see Asian spices, lentils and pulses advertised as staples on this shop front store (another indication that local cuisine retains influence from former migrant histories).

This A&P is doomed. Again. When Hurricane Irene strikes Sunday, by Monday, this area will be under at least two feet of water. The A&P will be flooded out, ruined. I hope I'm wrong. Time will tell.

This A&P was just flooded out about a year ago when rains from a Nor'easter caused massive river flooding. Recovery firms (flood recovery, mold mitigation, construction crews) came in and rebuilt the entire store over the course of about a month. Now, I see it happening again, and again, and again. This is a flood zone. The river is directly behind the building and only needs to rise about 15 feet to flood this lot. Good luck Sunday A&P!

I figured I'd take this "before" picture.

I've never seen one of these vintage Cee Bee signs before. Seen in Lobelville, TN

Not all are public.

Then two come along at once.

Apparently they're building an Aldi here.

I've always thought the local Brampton Co-op looks just a little like a Swiss Ski Lodge, so the snow just completes it if you ask me!

Rather interestingly, this shop, which became a co-op in about 2001, is in a conservation area.
