Instructions now on Rebrickable!

It has been exactly a year and one day since my last Lego post, so coming back into it with a tribute to one of my favorite pieces of musical gear.

The Moog Sub Phatty is a monophonic (1-voice) analog synthesizer capable of some pretty fat, sub sounds. Has a 25-key keyboard and 31 knobs for shaping the overall sound. The big knob in the model controls the low-pass filter, which gives most Moog synthesizers their famous signature sound.

Name: Moog Sub Phatty

Pieces: 703 (synthesizer assembly only)

Hi folks 🐧

So a new song is out there!

While I'm still waiting for a new guitar that I ordered a long time ago, I thought to spent my time learning new synths... (I'm still a n00b in that field).

I first planned to make a song using the übercool LMMS only, but quickly switched to Reaper DAW (what else...) running on Linux.

I had a computer crash, tech and other problems and finally I didn't create the kind of song as I planned (as usual).

Near the end I couldn't resist to add a line with my old guitar, the urge was too big.

I hope you like the different parts of it. Find the whole song via your fav streaming platform & feel free to share it and add it to your playlist!

FYI, this time I used the free open source, cross-platform Odin2 synth from The Wave Warden and of course Hive from U-He (that goes without saying...)

Guitar FX are also fully open source with Mod Duo from Mod Devices

A latenight dialouge recording

The home studio is mainly being used as a music room now. When I was a kid, I wanted to be the synthesizer player in a new wave band, but I wasn't any good at the piano and all I really wanted to do was just twiddle around and make cool noises with the things. And frankly I would never look good with Nick Rhodes' hair. So, now, some 27 years later, I have dozens of virtual synths on my Mac, a keyboard with knobs, and the amazing Korg Kaoss Pad, and I can twiddle 24/7. Anyone want to start a new wave band?

These pictures don't show it, but the accordion is in this room as well. The next photo has some notes detailing the hardware, but that's Ableton Live 7 and Reaktor 5 currently on the screen.

Sadly, my old school friend, George, lost his mother recently.

These cassettes are recordings of her singing, mostly in the 1970s. Most have not been heard for many years, and I am happy to have been asked to transfer them to a modern digital format for preservation.

From my new studio, this is one of the two control rooms. Check out www.gritastudios.com

The Raspberry Pi 3 is capable of doing some impressive tasks.

In this demonstration I set up a complete workstation for recording and mixing audio on the RPi3.

I setup a Focusrite Scarlett 2i4 audio interface. This device is ideal as it is a legacy USB interface so will work with the "ALSA" audio driver in Raspbian.

There is a slight issue with the RPi USB port and recording from a USB audio device that needs to be fixed otherwise garbled data will be captured.

By modifying the cmdline.txt file and replacing:

dwc_otg.lpm_enable=0

with:

dwc_otg.fiq_fsm_enable=0

This will ensure audio recording works properly.

Next I installed the software application called "Ardour" version 2.8.16 from the Jessie repository for the RPi.

Once Ardour is installed and running I setup the "JACK" server settings on Ardour's start window. These are for the USB interface and "ALSA" driver, frames/period to "128" for 8.71 milliseconds latency and the sample rate to "44100", then created a new project.

On testing the system recording and playback works very well and the user interface is quite responsive.

The system was fairly stable and only stopped running with audio dropping out on a few occasions, mostly due to Ardour not being fast enough to keep up with "Jack" server but is quickly fixed by opening the "JACK server" application and re-starting the server.

I also tried installing "calf audio plugins" and these also worked very well. The system stopped running on random occasions when i got too ambitious with trying to run more than three plugins at the same time.

After testing that record and playback works and plugins work in "Ardour" on the RPi 3 I took a Logic 9 project I created on a Apple Mac computer previously and exported the audio tracks individually and saved them to a USB memory stick.

I copied the audio files from the memory stick to the RPi3 and imported them into a new project in "Ardour". The Raspberry Pi 3 handled playing back the 13 audio tracks with no problem and only using about 15 percent CPU resources.

In this photo is the arrangement window.

The final setup of my creative studio in Linux Mint, with my favourite daw: Reaper.

Experimenting with sounds on the ModDuo and U-he Synths.

Stay tuned ;-)

Hi Friends,

You know, sometimes people get friendzoned, but sometimes you are welcome to join a new circle of warm friends. So wherever you are, please feel welcome and join! Just show up, be there, here you belong, in all your glory!

So I recently recorded this new song FOR YOU! (this time without lyrics or vocals 😉)

Just let the instruments speak and the listener will imagine and maybe interpret a declaration of love, for diversity, peace and inclusion. Because whether you like it or not, we all have to walk together on this same rock, floating in space.

Of course, you can find ‹ Welcome In The Friendzone › on all major streaming platforms 😉

Feel free to share it around, leave a comment here or on YouTube, or add it to your playlist on Spotify 😉

dublab’s 23rd Anniversary Party is the organization’s annual fundraiser – proceeds from the event go towards the station operation and towards supporting its programming and non-profit mission. As a listener-funded 501 (c) (3) non-profit radio station, dublab has become a cultural institution in Los Angeles, using radio to foster a creative community of music lovers, musicians, and DJs that has expanded to affiliate stations in Japan, Spain, Germany and Brazil. dublab programs go beyond its core radio project with live events such as the Alice Coltrane concert that took place at Grand Performances on August 27 and its signature annual ambient happening Tonalism that took place in July at Descanso Gardens.

This year’s celebration will take place from 6pm to 11pm at 2220 Arts + Archives (2220arts.org) followed by an after party at a secret location that will go from 10pm till late…

studio memories from 2012...

I wanted to know what the motherboard of a Focusrite Saffire Pro 40 audio interface would look like. I also wanted to know what chips were involved in its audio magic. I couldn't find any pics online, so I took my own.

Chips involved:

DICE TCD2220 FireWire chip with JET PLL clock

Spansion 16Megabit (2 Megabyte) flash ram, 55ns latency

Texas Instruments TSA41B2 Firewire arbiter chip

Lots of JRC (New Japan Radio Corp.) operational amplifier chips

Lots of NXP (Philips Corp.) HEF4053BT Triple single-pole double-throw analog switch

The Focusrite is exceptionally flexible with its signal routing capabilities. I should have looked more at the capacitors, of which there are many.

The build quality of the chassis is good, though the actual alignment of many of the motherboard parts (eg. capacitors) was somewhat poor. Many of them were soldered on at a tilt. Oh well. It works great!

It's really hard to focus, but i like it.

Interviews are recorded by Hens Zimmerman using a portable Protools setup with a Digidesign/Focusrite MBox.
