There are many little rocky coves all along the western end of the beach at Portknockie in Morayshire, Scotland. As the tide changes, they offer many different compositions. I like this one because of the wave the waves lead you through the image and out to sea.

St Andrew's Tower, said to be the oldest standing building in Peebles.

This was originally the tower of St Andrew's Parish Church, which was consecrated by Bishop Jocelin of Glasgow in 1195. The church he consecrated probably stood on the site of an earlier church, or more likely a series of earlier churches, dedicated to St Mungo, which stretched back over five centuries to the establishment of Christianity in Peebles in the 600s.

In 1543 St Andrew's became a collegiate church. This meant that a local landowner endowed it with sufficient funds for a group, or college, of clerics to take up residence and pray for the eternal souls of the benefactor and his family.

They didn't have long to do so, however, because in 1548, during Henry VIII of England's Rough Wooing of Mary, Queen of Scots, an English army largely destroyed Peebles. St Andrew's was burned down and never rebuilt. After the Reformation of 1560, Cross Kirk, previously an abbey church just half a mile to the east of St Andrew's, became Peebles' new parish church.

The ruins of St Andrew's seem to have been left as the focal point of what became the main graveyard in Peebles. In 1858 the ruins were consolidated and drastically restored. The result was that when MacGibbon and Ross visited St Andrew's during the research for their Ecclesiastical Architecture of Scotland, published in 1896, they concluded that "It has been so completely restored or transformed by the late Dr Chambers that it is now of no interest whatsoever as a specimen of the ancient architecture of Scotland."

Chichen Itza was a large pre-Columbian city built by the Maya people of the Terminal Classic period. The archaeological site is located in Tinúm Municipality, Yucatán State, Mexico.

Chichen Itza was a major focal point in the Northern Maya Lowlands from the Late Classic (c. AD 600–900) through the Terminal Classic (c. AD 800–900) and into the early portion of the Postclassic period (c. AD 900–1200). The site exhibits a multitude of architectural styles, reminiscent of styles seen in central Mexico and of the Puuc and Chenes styles of the Northern Maya lowlands. The presence of central Mexican styles was once thought to have been representative of direct migration or even conquest from central Mexico, but most contemporary interpretations view the presence of these non-Maya styles more as the result of cultural diffusion.

Chichen Itza was one of the largest Maya cities and it was likely to have been one of the mythical great cities, or Tollans, referred to in later Mesoamerican literature. The city may have had the most diverse population in the Maya world, a factor that could have contributed to the variety of architectural styles at the site.

The ruins of Chichen Itza are federal property, and the site's stewardship is maintained by Mexico's Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia (National Institute of Anthropology and History). The land under the monuments had been privately owned until 29 March 2010, when it was purchased by the state of Yucatán.

Chichen Itza is one of the most visited archaeological sites in Mexico with over 2.6 million tourists in 2017.

The sunlight is concentrated in a focal spot using a glass sphere. The concentrated heat of the sunlight burns a hole in a strip of paper placed there. The sun slowly travelling across the sky extends the hole into a slit, from the length and position of which the duration of sunshine and the corresponding time of day can be read on the paper.

***STARLESS VERSION OF IC443 JELLYFISH NEBULA***

IC443, Jellyfish Nebula. This is my 1st of 2 images taken between the 16th and 21st January, very unusual to get 3 out of 4 clear nights, it was actually clear on the 22nd as well but decided not to go out.

I also image this about a year ago using my Meade 115mm APO with the Same Explore 0.7 focal reducer but decided I wanted to retake this in a wide field, longer exposures and more of them. This was easily the most subs over the longest time I’ve ever undertaken, 8h 20min over 2 nights. I wasn’t planning to but I got a bonus night on the 21st and it was either start on a new subject or double the amount of subs on the jellyfish, I went with the latter.

IC443 also known as the “Jellyfish Nebula” is a supernova remnant located in the constellation Gemini. It’s is approximately 5000 Light Years from earth with apparent size of 50’x40’ arcmin. This nebula contains the collapsed remnants of a stellar core and is one of the most studied supernova remnants. The age of this supernova is uncertain but is believed to have happened some 3,000 - 30,000 years ago.

Before you draw your conclusions about this image, please read the description.

The sky and foreground were captured back to back at the same focal length and with the same equipment from a single tripod position.

The camera position was roughly 2 miles away from the mountain station, and the telescope/camera combination has an extremely narrow field of view of only 1.5° x 2°. The resulting telephoto compression makes the otherwise tiny Orion Nebula appear huge.

Two years ago, I had already captured a similar deepscape, but I was never really satisfied with it. The problem was lacking data for my sky, especially in the green channel, as clouds moved in towards the end of the imaging session.

Of course, I could have recaptured the missing data or the entire Orion Nebula from a different place, but that's not my style. After waiting two years for an opportunity to reshoot the image, I finally got my chance this February.

The weather this time was perfect, which made capturing the sky pretty straightforward, but otherwise, the conditions were still as demanding as 2 years ago.

Getting the foreground in focus with a monochrome micro 4/3rd astro-cam and RGB filters through a 500mm f/5.6 telescope is a real pain. Furthermore, snowcats grooming the slopes caused constantly changing, extremely bright illumination. Considering this, I am quite happy that I was able to capture a usable foreground.

Candid eye contact street photography from Glasgow, Scotland.

Some might consider 70mm to be a short telephoto focal length although some consider the 85mm to be a long-standard lens. Personally I don't care. I shoot with my 24-70mm lens because of two reasons. First, it is a quality piece of glass that is pin sharp and, most importantly in Glasgow, weather resistant. Secondly, my old ankle injury and subsequent surgeries mean that I cannot move as quickly as I would like and that little bit of focal length reach means that I can get the shots that I see before me with a degree of flexibility. I find that 70mm is perfect for a candid portrait where the character is the subject, stopping down to f/3.5 isolates the subject nicely but still keeps the street background in context with the shot. Enjoy!

On a full frame, 35mm, the 50mm is seen as standard (although 40mm is closer to standard for the dimensions of the sensor or film of this size). 35mm is considered a wide standard and 85mm is considered a long standard. Let me know what you think! :)
