Synopsis

As “Love and Kisses” Finnegan scoots over the last white line with the ball tucked safely under his arms to even State’s score with Colton, there is more than a football game at stake. Finnegan has his heart set on Gloria Van Dayham, fiancee of Larry Stacey, who plays a piccolo in the college band. And Gloria is seeing things more and more Finnegan’s way.

All set to kick the winning point, Finnegan hesitates because Joe and his Duck, the team mascot, have not shown up yet. Suddenly a taxi rolls into the stadium to disgorge Joe, with Duck under one arm, waving a piece of paper on which he has just worked out a crazy trick play. Finnegan kicks the goal and wins the game.

THAT evening Finnegan is acclaimed the A. P. All-American choice and gets along famously with Gloria. Everybody is happy but Larry who says, bitterly, that Finnegan will be glad to get a job behind the ribbon counter in Larry’s father’s store after graduation.

Two years pass and Larry’s prophecy comes true. Finnegan goes to Stacey’s father who is fed up with his son’s ultra refined merchandizing methods, sells him the big idea of modernizing the store with “collegiate” atmosphere, and wins appointment as general manager.

Larry, realizing that he has been outwitted by Finnegan again, wants to resign, but his little secretary, June, gives him a fight talk and he decides to stay around for a chance to even scores.

The store, with the entire State football team, brass band and sales girls in chorus costumes, opens with a bang. Their success is so phenomenal that Stacey’s competitor Whimple, hires the Colton bunch to do the same thing for him.

THE rivalry grows keener until finally the two department store owners decide to match their football teams for the honor of their respective stores—and a substantial cash wager.

Whimple’s team employs all sorts of skullduggery to get ahead of the Staceys. Larry, who has been goaded into entering the game by June, is taking a terrific licking.

Just when things look darkest, Finnegan decides to use Joe’s goofy play from Whimple’s five-yard-line, and, to their surprise and joy, they go over for the winning score.

In the midst of the celebration and congratulations that follow the game, Larry and Finnegan agree that they are both “swell guys.” Larry further tells Finnegan that so far as he is concerned Finnegan can have Gloria he had just found out that he loves June. And he runs out to tell her so.

The Cove Theatre was a classic old movie theatre in downtown Hermosa Beach. It had started to in late 1979 booking bands peridiacally making big money from the beach punk community which by this time had grown exponentionally. Located 1 block south and a 1/2 block west of the Church, where Black Flag, The Last, early Descendents and Red Cross had lived and kicked off the whole South Bay scene in 1979. Even the old bath houses were still standing at this time. The Cove had some memorable gigs like this one and the Dead Kennedys, Alley Cats, Disposals and Red Cross too!

Fun with American Flyer Trains! While hanging out on Chief's layout this morning, I wanted to setup our version of the big event at Spencer using the 12-stall roundhouse on the Chicago, Midwest & Pacific.

For the 2nd setup, I decided to pull out all of the ALCo PA's Chief has from AC Gilbert and Lionel wearing different paint schemes. He was short one, but the New Haven EP5 pitched in just fine! Gilbert's 4-8-4 Northern looked great on the turntable.
