Venusfliegenfalle

carnivorous plant

When an Insect - Spiders, too - triggers those tiny red hairs on the inner lobes of a Venus Flytrap (see inset), the Trap snaps shut capturing a tasty morsel. It'll struggle a bit but inexorably our Insect will be caught up in a tightening, barred cell. There are just enough of those triggers to ensure that it's really an insect that's alighted on that lobe and not some little piece of detritus.

Our Caught Spider was unwisely spinning her web on Venus's 'teeth'; you can see part of it on the left. Somehow Ariadne must have lost her own thread and venturing 'south' triggered those hairs. Prisoner! and soon to be dissolved for a meal by Venus's enzymatic secretions. So far so bad for her; so far so good for Venus...

Or is it really good for Lady Trap? In this case: nope. Her Trigger Hairs felt bigger than her stomach. Ariadne is rather too big for her; body parts are sticking out from Venus's prison. Those spider legs can't be covered in 'antiseptic' digestive fluid. They're open to the air and to the manifold fungi and bacteria that dispose of dead insects. Soon those body parts will turn black, and in turn they'll infect pretty Green Trap, turning her Black to Death as well. Retribution for gluttony?...

Home from another adventure

The Venus flytrap (Dionaea muscipula) is a carnivorous plant native to subtropical wetlands on the East Coast of the United States in North Carolina and South Carolina.[3] It catches its prey—chiefly insects and arachnids—with a trapping structure formed by the terminal portion of each of the plant's leaves, which is triggered by tiny hairs (called "trigger hairs" or "sensitive hairs") on their inner surfaces.

When an insect or spider crawling along the leaves contacts a hair, the trap prepares to close, snapping shut only if another contact occurs within approximately twenty seconds of the first strike. Triggers may occur if one-tenth of the insect is within contact.[4] The requirement of redundant triggering in this mechanism serves as a safeguard against wasting energy by trapping objects with no nutritional value, and the plant will only begin digestion after five more stimuli to ensure it has caught a live bug worthy of consumption.

Dionaea is a monotypic genus closely related to the waterwheel plant (Aldrovanda vesiculosa) and sundews (Drosera), all of which belong to the family Droseraceae.

These are some more carnivorous plants (Sarracenia purpurea) that I found in Mt. Tomah Botanical gardens near Lithgow, NSW. They are probably the dried flowers of the pitcher plant in the first photo. They really do look like alien plant life - day of the Triffids. I will be out all day so I will catch up with you all later.

Venus Flytrap pic I took at the garden center. I cropped the fly from a different pic, processed him separately and added him here. Then went to town with the processing! :-) Lightroom, Photoshop and Topaz software. Happy Sliders Sunday!

With our friends visiting Wilmignton, we again went to visit one of our favorite places in town-- the Stanley Rehdar Carnivorous Plant Garden. There are so many types of animal eating plants. Here I captured a nice example of the Venus Flytrap.

I have a planter with various carnivorous plants. I have little experience with caring for them.

Darren bought me a few venus flytraps today on clearance at Lowe's. I've wanted on e for a long time & it's lovebug season, so lots of bugs to keep the plants fat & happy :D

There were several tiny sundews [which I mistook for the better-known Venus Flytrap] rowing on this log. Enlarge to see their tiny sticky globes that entangle insects, and the flower stalks they were sending up.

And thank you to Bob McElroy, who recognized these, and set the record straight. I corrected my original post into.

This Venus Flytrap mini-planter and black & white mister are new for Fifty Linden Friday! Get them for just L$50 each now through Sunday.

Well, my morning just started off with a Blue Screen of Death on my computer! Thankfully, it seems to have worked OK after turning off my computer and then turning it back on. I think my heart is still beating fast! I wonder if it had anything to do with getting four comments in a row on one of my photos last night, each one was just a string of jumbled letters. I did delete them immediately and also blocked the person.

This is a macro shot of a leaf tip belonging to a Venus Flytrap plant. Sometimes, the trap closes and stays closed for no obvious reason, as in this case. I'll add a previously posted photo of an open trap, and of a white flower, in a comment box below.

Yesterday was sunny with blue sky, which was so welcome after the very damaging summer snowstorm that hit Calgary hard the previous two days. I haven't driven anywhere since before the storm, so still haven't seen "the big picture". Just on my street yesterday, city crews were out on foot, marking the trees that needed branches removed. Now the edge of the street is lined with endless piles of cut branches, waiting for the trucks and equipment to come and deal with them. And that's just a tiny section of my street - makes you realize how many thousands of trees were damaged across the whole city. Not sure what happened to the sun today, as the sky is very overcast. It's supposed to return tomorrow, though. Later: it rained this afternoon, which helped get rid of more of the snow, but I suspect that down in our parks and natural areas there will be still be snow and slush. The weekend is looking good so far."
