The flood disaster in the Ahr valley in 2021 - four years on
In July 2021, the Ahr Valley in Germany was hit by a devastating flood disaster. The municipality of Altenahr was particularly badly affected, where the Ahr burst its banks within hours and caused massive destruction. Houses were washed away, roads were impassable and the infrastructure collapsed. The force of the water left a trail of devastation and claimed many lives.
Altenahr, known for its picturesque landscape and viticulture, became a symbol of tragedy - but also of reconstruction. The solidarity and tireless efforts of helpers from all over Germany and beyond characterised the weeks following the disaster. Even today, the local people are still struggling with the consequences as they rebuild their homeland with impressive determination.
