Haven't been on the water for a while due primarily to the winds, always a factor as a single in a canoe as any of you with that experience will know. It didn't take long for me to realize that in a battle with the wind, you will lose and you might as well just relax and enjoy the ride. With time and experience I've learned how to handle some choppy waters which provide a pleasing and satisfying challenge as long as the breeze is somewhat consistent. It's the gusts that send you where they will.
In any event, eager to get out again, I managed yesterday's somewhat brisk breezes, getting to the sheltered bays where I discovered a few of the maples leading to way to autumn.
“In the flush of love's light
we dare be brave
And suddenly we see
that love costs all we are
and will ever be.
Yet it is only love
which sets us free.” ― Maya Angelou

What a thrill to see the waterfowl flush like this. The only thing better would be to not be shooting it through the brush! : )
Dancing in the shallows to flush out small fish and other tasty morsels. Low water levels on Rutland Water have seen large numbers of Egrets gathering around the lake shores (8655).
I was out in the hinterlands northeast of Kennewick looking for some snow buntings and gray partridges that had been recently reported. I didn't find any of those, but I did manage to get some shots of this ring-necked pheasant flying away.
Inside the old house I was staying in in Rye; it dates back to the 1520s (Henry VIII was king of England when it was built). I spent quite a spooky Halloween night here!
For an account of my trip to Rye and Dungeness (and more pictures of the amazing Medieval house I was staying in) :
Just out of frame to the top and left is LaGuardia Airport and the Grand Central Parkway where there's nothing bucolic.
A female Northern Harrier (Circus cyaneus) patrolling low over her hunting ground. It's typical hunting behavior -- Harriers usually cruise along just above the brush or other low cover in order to flush their game.
"Summer set lip to earth's bosom bare,
And left the flushed print in a poppy there:
Like a yawn of fire from the grass it came,
And the fanning wind puffed it to flapping flame.
With burnt mouth red like a lion's it drank
The blood of the sun as he slaughtered sank,
And dipped its cup in the colored shine
When the eastern conduits ran with wine".
