[This set contains 8 photos] The J. Sidna Allen house (1911) in Fancy Gap, Virginia is a timber frame one-and-a-half-story Queen Anne on a brick foundation. Diamond-shaped shingles cover the upper portion of the building, and ornamental wood trim abounds. It has a cross-gable slate roof intersected by dormer windows and a hexagonal tower capped by a cone. The roof line is complex as a result of the dormers and tower. The Eastlake brackets and scalloping in the cornices correspond to the brackets and flat drops of the porch (best seen in image #6). The front gable roof and front dormer roof ridges formerly had a pattern of iron cresting them, which I assume will appear on the restored structure. There are two exterior brick chimneys and an interior one, each capped with a stone course, four stone insets and corbelled brickwork at the top.
The porch has a shed roof with shingles, brackets and scalloping; at one corner is a gazebo with a conical slate roof and a banquet of wood decoration. Above the front entrance, and connected to a door in the tower, was a balcony (missing at this time in the restoration process). The porch support columns and turned balusters are also currently missing. A small side porch on one side of the house shows a similar pattern of decoration. The entrance has sidelights and a rectangular transom. The molded trim, simulating piers, occurs as window surrounds as well. Most of the windows are temporarily covered: they originally were stained or leaded, many with intricate patterns. Some were 3-part, showing a classical Palladian influence. Some were decorated with a border of smaller colored panes in Queen Anne-style.
Steps led from the road up the hill to the front porch; at present, they are not there. It's easy to see the beauty of this home, even in its pre-restoration state by the Carroll County Historical Society. Architecturally significant, the J. Sidna Allen House was placed on the National Register of Historic Places July 15, 1974 with ID # 74002112
Allen and his wife, who designed their own home, enjoyed it for about a year before the state of Virgnia confiscated the property. Then occurred the Hillsville Massacre of 1912 involving the Allen family in a melee where the judge and some county officials were killed. Sidna Allen was sentenced to life imprisonment; two members of his family were executed. I had the Floyd LP "Animals" for a while and so knew every song, but since it was a new release they went on and did parts of "Dark Side of the Moon" performance as well as parts1-9 of "Shine on You Crazy Diamond" , "Welcome to the Machine" , "Have a Cigar" , and "Wish You Were Here" and have to admit that was wise because the crowd went wild when that happened. ( I just checked online to make sure I had all of the songs that were played that night, although I coulda swore they did "Us and Them" too.) They did "Money" for sure off D.S.M..
Parts of the performance included various floating animals as well as extraordinary (for that time) light show. I know that it started out kinda hot n muggy being in Tampa, Florida, funny how it seemed to get so much hotter after sundown ;) (8PM).
Just had to put this image on flickr after I saw an ad on TV yesterday for an imitation Floyd group, (not the real PINK FLOYD) and tickets were going for Two Hundred Dollars. I live just over the state line from Vegas so these imitation groups are always showing up, but not nearly what the Real Thing was like. Alas...

Today our neightbour-dog "Floyd" has gone to the DOG HEAVEN.
The Rodesian Ridgeback original was breed for hunting on wild animals like lions and guard dog of the house.
Characteristics:
- the ridge on the back
- strong, muscular, balanced and athletic dog
- no barkers, but they will be an alert watchdog to anything unusual
Russell Hiatt, the actual Floyd, as portrayed on the Andy Griffith show, in his shop in Mount Airy, NC. The shop's walls are well adorned with photos of celebrities that have paid tribute to this icon of Americana. Handheld.
We used to enjoy the cooking programmes of the legendary TV chef Keith Floyd who was famous for, amongst other things (like cooking!) for enjoying a glass of alcoholic something or other, whilst preparing the food.
I must admit that I quite like a snifter whilst cooking too. Whilst I'm clearly not up to the standards of Keith (RIP), it is bit of a joke in our house that if anyone wafts through the kitchen and spots a can of beer open or a glass of wine on the go, they say something along the lines of "Ah, Floyd on (insert name of dish being prepared)". Yesterday it was Floyd On Fajitas - a family fave. I'm sure that Keith wouldn't have ever used a supermarket bought "Fajita Kit" though ;-)
I'm only posting this stuff as its been observed that I've been a bit "quiet" on Flickr of late, just to prove I haven't been abducted by aliens. I suppose if the aliens liked Fajitas I could rustle something up for them - washed down by a lager or two.

Came across this poster, nicely placed on a bench outside the Dundee University Student's Union.
It turns out the poster depicts Pink Floyd's "Back Catalogue" album cover. I didnt know this, not being a heavy rock fan!

Nadat een loc van de Hafen Krefeld klaar was met het rangeren met de laatste wagens kon op 9 augustus 2013 de lege graantrein met bovengenoemde locs vertrekken uit Krefeld-Linn richting Neuss. De graanwagens zijn in de haven van Krefeld gelost bij Cargill.
