Geum triflorum also known as prairie smoke, three-flowered avens and old man's whiskers,
Green-flowered Helleborine / epipactis phyllanthes. Lincolnshire. 22/07/19.
Three out of the four flowers on this plant were characteristically pendulous. Each was hanging from a swollen green ovary. The entire plant was only about 12cms in height, which is typical of those growing in shaded woodland.
Green-flowered Helleborines colonising coastal dune systems, can attain the heady heights of 45cms. They would make viewing and photography conditions much more agreeable, as I doubt they would have legions of very aggressive biting mosquitoes around them, like mine did. My images cost me blood, sweat and bites that day!
BEST VIEWED LARGE.
Après la photo, voici la vidéo d'un rocher couvert de plantes de la miniature Masdevallia picturata bien fleuries in situ, observées durant un tour "Orchidées et nature" de trois jours que je viens de guider dans le département du Valle del Cauca, Colombie.

Paul Cézanne painted Still Life with Curtain and Flowered Pitcher in oil on canvas around 1898. This painting is in the collection of the Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg.
The painting shows two plates with fruit spread over the surface of the table on which draperies and a flowered pitcher are placed.
Still life was a very important part of Cézanne’s work. The inventive and revolutionary principles that Cézanne introduced to still life painting can be traced through his relationship to perspective, line, and color. In the domain of perspective, Cézanne made changes that would greatly influence the later development of modern painting. He refined the default concept of linear perspective by introducing the idea of simultaneous observation of objects from several points. Relying on the theory of inverse perspective, Cézanne strove to provide as much information as possible about the presented subject. In structuring the scene, Cézanne minimized the role of the line. Although drawing was very important in Cézanne’s detailed preparation for each composition, the scene ultimately rests on the complex relationship of colors. Thus, the line in the scene was replaced by a combination of colored fields arranged according to the idea of complementarity. The complementarity of colors is the key element of Cézanne’s complex palette. Cézanne achieved harmony in both still lifes and landscapes by modulating painted surfaces based on the combination of warm and cold tones.

Green-flowered Helleborine / epipactis phyllanthes. Lincolnshire. 22/07/19.
A close view of three Green-flowered Helleborine flowers. The plant they grew on was about 15cms tall, so they were small, green (as their name suggests), though flushed whitish-cream in places.
The c26 x plant colony was growing in deep shade in a pine belt and would have been difficult to spot had it not been for protective wire cages over the tops of most of them. These were to prevent damage from deer and rabbits.
The flowers were understated and if I am honest, rather underwhelming to look at. However, this was not the case with the vicious mosquitoes that favoured the hot, humid site. They were relentless and completely overwhelming ...
Pyrola grandiflora Radius
This is a fairly common Arctic wildflower that often grows under or near willows in large colonies along the coast. It stands 10-15 cm high. I was lying on the ground to get this angle!
It, and other members of the same family contain a drug related to aspirin and poultices of the leaves have been used to reduce swelling and pain of bruises and wounds.
