Newberry National Volcanic Monument was designated on November 5, 1990 to protect the area around the Newberry Volcano in the United States. It was created within the boundaries of the Deschutes National Forest and is managed by the U.S. Forest Service. It includes 50,000 acres (20,000 ha) of lakes, lava flows, and spectacular geologic features in central Oregon. These photos are taken from the summit Paulina Peak 7,985 ft, (2,434 m). Just below us are East Lake and Paulina Lake and The Big Obsidian Flow, created 1,300 years ago, covers 700 acres. It is hard to fathom as you drive through the summit area that you are within a 17 square mile caldera at the summit of a 500 square mile volcano, a volcano that remains very active to this day. Newberry is both seismically and geothermally active. Geologists believe the caldera sits over a shallow magma body only 2 to 5 kilometers deep. Visitors see numerous cinder cones (over 400 throughout the area), miles of basalt flows, as well as rhyolite flows of obsidian.

The new network of small ponds features many, many flow control structures.

With the arrival of fall the nesting season is over and I am allowed to photograph in the South Bay again. This year I received a request to photograph a construction project that is subdividing Salt Pond A12 into series of smaller managed ponds to serve as avian habitat. The ponds will be kept at different salinities.

 

This project occurs along the banks of Mt. Eden Slough, the “cradle of San Francisco’s salt industry” according to author John Sandoval. This section of former marsh is where the first small salt operations appeared in the 19th Century and here remain the most interesting of old salt works ruins, some so faint they are at the threshold of perception. The land is now going through yet another transformation as part of the South Bay Salt Pond Restoration Project and will see considerable change over the next few years. It should be fun to watch.

 

The set captures the construction project well underway as heavy machinery creates distribution ditches and flow control structures. Many photographs in this set are prosaic images documenting construction. But the session also found some interesting surface textures, particularly in the machine worked layers of clay that line the new ditches. The set also contains a few photographs of Mount Eden Creek Marsh, an area restored to tidal flow in 2008.

 

I am taking these documentary photographs under a Special Use Permit from the California Department of Fish & Wildlife. Kite flying is prohibited over the Eden Landing Ecological Reserve without a Special Use Permit, as is access to this part of the Don Edwards National Wildlife Refuge.

 

Not too much, not that many. Just enough volume for a serene flow.

Couple of things got me thinking tonight. My interest in WW2 came from my grandfather. Dave Screen. He was based at Scapa as the whole fleet was during these times and though his ship escaped the carnage here he was later torpedoed on HMS Liverpool.

 

I wont go into the details incase relatives of that day see this, needless to say though it was a harrowing experience.

 

I loved looking at his photo albums as I grew up and every morning id have him tell me a war story :)

 

I was looking at these shots and felt they were worthless, but now ive decided to try and make this one like one of Pops that I saw in his albums.

 

So here Dave, this is for you. Youll be pleased to know I can take the bookie regular, I drink like you (though I hate rum) I smoke like a chimney and im always getting in shit for something. :)

 

We will meet again, but not yet mate...not yet.

I discover the joy of dry suits - by the way I am taking the photo, of course I looked much more chic than that in my dry suit.

My journey continues and I get drenched, rivers running through my feet, rain driving into my eyeballs, water dripping from my nose. A very small car pulls alongside me and winds down the window, dripping I peer into a very dry little cosy world.

 

do you want a lift?? the guy asks, I am somewhat taken aback as, number one my bike is bigger than his car and number two the water I have absorbed would probably fill his car and drown us both. I politely decline saying that it was not possible for me to get any wetter so I was OK.

 

What was odd was the next few days I was diving, discovering the joys of a dry suit which means you are under 30metres of water wearing your cosy clothes that are completely dry in your dry suit. The day I finish I cycle back to Kirkwall and once again get drenched so it seemed that I was dry underwater and soaked above for my first few days on Orkney.

Volcanoclastic debris flows or lahars triggered by intense rainfall due to bulking are influenced by surface characteristics that reduce the downward infiltration of groundwater after saturation. Variations in surface cover control storm water runoff, thus affecting the timing and volume of water entering a river channel prone to lahars. Rainfall induced debris flows constitute a serious geologic hazard to communities in many parts of the world. The abundant loose erodible material on volcanoes increases the likelihood and severity of large debris flow events; this combined with dense populations make volcanoes an important area for lahar research and mitigation measures. This study was carried out on the slopes of the Republic of the Philippines most active volcano, Mt. Mayon, in hopes of increasing the understanding of debris flow initiation. Two tipping bucket rain gauges equipped with data loggers were deployed to determine an intensity-duration rainfall threshold during quiescent periods on Mayon. The steady-state infiltration capacities of Mayons substrates were determined using a double-ring infiltrometer ponding method. Additional infiltrometer experiments were carried out with an overlying simulated ash layer of 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, and 100 mm in order to quantify the effects of tephra cover on ground infiltration, adding supporting data that decreased infiltration and increased likelihood of debris flow initiation occur after an eruptive event. Finally, sieve analyses of the volcanic substrates were conducted to better understand the variations of infiltration and runoff due to grain size distribution. An intensity-duration rainfall threshold for quiescent periods on Mayon was estimated to be (I=46.2D- 0.43). Average infiltration measurements ranged from 5.43-230.83 mm/hr depending on the type of substrate, vegetation cover, and grain size distribution. Simulated ash layers were found to increase initial infiltration (first 10 minutes) but decreased long-term infiltration (minutes - hours) between 2-30%. The average infiltration for each watershed was compared to the estimated volume of the lahars that were produced during Typhoon Reming in 2006, indicating a correlation between infiltration characteristics and debris flow severity.

Blue Basin is a large badlands area that holds the distinct bluish-green celadonite of the Turtle Cove Formation, dating to 29 mya. Turtle Cove holds the largest layer found in the John Day Fossil Beds and holds one of the largest numbers of fossils in Oregon.

 

The fossil history of John Day records three supervolcanoes that swept through this area. The second of the three, the Crooked River Caldera, became very active around 30 mya, spewing large layers of volcanic ash. Few plants are recorded in the layer, mainly hackberry seeds, though it is apparent that the John Day region had greatly opened up, becoming a mix of woodland and scrubland. Archaeotherium Entelodonts, known as "hell pigs" though they were more closely related to hippopotami, were the apex predator, though they shared predation with the pogondon, nimravus and hoplophoneus nimravids, also known as "false" sabertooth cats. Ancient ancestral dogs such as Mesocyon and its evolutionary successors Philotrox and Enhydrocyons all lived around the same period (known as cladogenesis) until a devastating pyroclastic flow eliminated Philotrox from the area. Enhydrocyons end up becoming one of the largest dog ancestors, weighing up to 23kg. Also present were the Cynarctoides, a lemur-like canine ancestor that climbed trees and at fruits. The predators preyed on various species of mice deer, Hypertragulus and Nanotragulus, the hog-like oreodonts, Agriochoerus. After the two massive volcanic obliterated most of the area, the recovered terrain became more scrubland, and the Agriochoerus were replaced by Paroreodon, Eporeodon and Promerycochoerus. The ancient camel, Gentilicamelus, first appeared, and small mammals such as the rabbit Achaeolagus, and the beaver Capacikala became more frequent.

 

The 5.2km Blue Basin Overlook Trail seen here is the longest official hike in John Day Fossil Beds National Monument, wrapping its way around Blue Basin before overlooking it on the descent.

 

The basin is more bluish in the afternoon sunlight, certainly not on a rain-soaked day like this one.
