Last night's sunset over the River Soar. That flock leaves quite a gap in my occasional "counting birds at sunset" series ;-)
The Maasduinen form the longest river dune belt in the Netherlands and were created through the interaction of water, wind and people.
One of my favorite events of fall is the huge flocks of blackbirds that form to feed on the recently cut fields and farms.
Mainly starlings and red-winged blackbirds, these huge flocks fly together landing and quickly taking off again, over and over feeding on insects and seeds.

A few days before Christmas, an overnight snowfall left several inches of snow and trees caked with the white stuff, setting the scene for an eastbound freight rolling through CP Maumee, just east of Toledo, Ohio with Canadian National power.
Waiting for a caffeine hit on my desk. A gift from a kind friend Down Under acclimating to US coffee tastes.
The day we went tramping and I forgot my camera - bugger! But yay to the handy iPhone! It was an awesome day! And here is the evidence! :)
Cooperative Feeding?
I watched a mixed flock of more than twenty snowy egrets and yellowlegs in a line executing a fascinating and apparently coordinated feeding strategy at Bombay Hook.
The behavior may have been coincidental, but it appeared to be intentional and was repeated many times. One group would feed in a line, then the second group would fly over them and land just ahead of them to feed. They appeared to be shepherding a huge shoal of tiny fish into very shallow water on the mudflats.

As I was walking home alongside the Union Canal on an autumn evening, I caught sight of a whole flock of birds, moving in a formation, back and forth behind some tenements, silhouetted against the dusk sky.
Sadly I only managed to get a couple of very quick snaps off before they vanished behind the buildings, but it was still magical to watch them, wheeling and turning in a formation.
