I met my first wild alligator today. She was panhandling at a rest stop along Florida's infamous Alligator Alley. She was such a willing and lovely subject that I felt bad not sharing my lunch with her. She was clearly disappointed but feeding wildlife snacks isn't good for them or us so I managed to resist her mesmerizing charm.
My second time vacationing to Florida, and this time it was a far better photographic experience. Visited a lot of landmarks and attractions.
Wow wow wow. My visit to Gatorland I seriously expected it to be much like High Park Zoo. Just a quick walk though of a couple of gators. Boy was I wrong. Of all the zoos I’ve visited I would place this as the second best zoo. Beautiful exhibits, a huge amount of wildlife. I have never seen so many species of bird in one area at once. The cherry on top was their interactive shows. They really know how to perform for entertainment. I really wish that I can visit again one day. A truly great experience.
Sunrise at Sewall's Point in Stuart Florida, as the sun kisses the palm fronds and dips them in gold.

Another shot of the Cape Florida Light House at Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park on the island of Key Biscayne in FL. While the traffic nixed my plan to be there at sunrise or shortly after...it was still pretty and the beachgoers had not arrived yet :-)
Aphelocoma coerulescens
One of several observed on a cool, foggy morning in a large tract of xeric scrub in central Florida.
The Florida snail kite is aptly named - it feeds almost exclusively on apple snails and, in the United States, is found only in Florida.
The species was listed as endangered in 1967. Today, the population is considered to be stable, but extremely vulnerable to the stresses of habitat loss, prolonged droughts and anything that affects the availability of apple snails, its primary food.
Snail kites breed from December to August and lay an average of three eggs in bulky nests built in a variety of wetland trees, shrubs and emergent vegetation. During the nesting season, the birds are usually found singly or in pairs; in winter, they often roost together in communal groups.
Lucky observers will witness the snail kite in action, as it searches for its prey by flying low over shallow freshwater marshes scattered with shrubs and trees. When it spots a snail, it swoops down, extends its legs into the water and briefly hovers while it grasps the snail with its talons. While still in flight or after landing on a nearby perch, the kite uses its thin, hooked bill to pull the snail from its shell,

Florida Scrub Jay ~ (Aphelocoma coerulescens)
The beautiful Florida Scrub Jay. The only species of bird that is endemic to Florida. They are endangered due to habitat loss. They are extremely social birds and work very much as a community. A nesting pair of adult birds has other scrub jays in the flock that assists in feeding the young and defending their territory.
Thanks for visiting!
Amazing little creatures. I caught this one while in Florida, but I had to grab a shot before I released him.
One palm frond, two palm fronds, three palm fronds, four.
Gently swaying, in the trade wind breeze,
Holding court along the shore.
I see now, why they call this paradise,
Tropical dreams … forever more.
Location: Islamorada, Florida Keys.

This was taken during our trip to Florida last December. The weather was perfect for a late afternoon walk along the water's edge!

A great photograph is a full expression of what one feels about what is being photographed in the deepest sense, and is, thereby, a true expression of what one feels about life in its entirety. ~Ansel Adams
Una gran fotografía es una expresión cabal de lo que uno siente acerca de lo que está siendo fotografiado en el sentido más profundo, y es, por tanto, una verdadera expresión de lo que uno siente sobre la vida en su totalidad. ~ Ansel Adams

Another one of the shots I took with Ivan's camera before he "stole my shot"*. For this picture I used a 3 exposure HDR for the sky and sand and the 0EV single RAW exposure processed in Lightroom for the water.
Normally I like to stand in the water when taking shots of the lighthouse, but the water was very choppy due to the frequent storms we get here these days. I was too worried to get knocked over and drown Ivan's camera. Again the detail you can capture with the 5D Mark II just amazes me. In the original file you can see the sea grass floating around in the water.
*That's an insider joke in case you are wondering... :-)

Florida's nickname is the "Sunshine State", and for good reason. But Florida has one of the highest average precipitation levels of any state, in large part because afternoon thunderstorms are common. For a landscape photographer, this particular weather pattern provides the perfect opportunity: Clouds + Sunshine = great photographic material.
