Students, grades K-8, spent a couple hours with the South Dakota State School of Mines and Technology Aero Design Team learning about the science behind flight, operating simulator radio controlled vehicles and more during Flight Night on February 3, 2014. Flight Night is one of the many programs hosted on School of Mines campus that allow youth to explore concepts in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

Double Crested Cormorant
These gangly birds are often seen standing on an open perch with their wings outstretched facing into the wind. The cormorants have low buoyancy and wettable plumage. This allows them to remain submerged at depths of 8-12m for up to 70 seconds. They stand with wings outstretched to dry their wings, they lack the water repelling oil on their feathers that most other birds have.
They dive into the water with a leaping entry, and stand with their neck in an S-shape and bill tilted upwards.
In the midst of downtown urban Toronto, you may stumble upon this remarkable peninsula.
The Leslie St. Spit stretches out 5 km into Lake Ontario, near downtown. This is a car-free park, that is one of the city’s most unique jewels. With walking, running, and cycling trails, stunning cityscape views of the C.N. Tower, Toronto Harbour and surrounding skyscrapers, and some vegetation and wildlife, rare to find anywhere else in Canada. The Spit was originally intended to be a breakwater for harbour expansion, started 40 years ago. If you are visiting the city and looking for something interesting or living in the city and need some of nature’s R&R, give the Leslie St. Spit a tour. You will not be disappointed.

We visited this park on an extremely wet and moody day in the city. We watched a thunderstorm descend upon Toronto from the peninsula, completely engulfing the CN Tower and then we watched it aim for us with it’s evil stormy laser sight and drench us from head to toe, not once, but twice. A friendly shuttle driver picked us up on the way back, and I could have kissed him I was so wet and miserable. Hope you enjoy these soggy pictures.

Sculpture on the boundary path at Nottingham East Midlands Airport.. Designed with the help of local primary school children, the sculpture is on the subject of flight. It shows various flying things including planes, birds, a dragon, balloons and even a flying saucer!

Wright Brothers National Memorial, located in Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina, commemorates the first successful, sustained, powered flights in a heavier-than-air machine. From 1900 to 1903, Wilbur and Orville Wright came here from Dayton, Ohio, based on information from the U.S. Weather Bureau about the area's steady winds. They also valued the privacy provided by this location, which in the early twentieth century was remote from major population centers.
