The world wide web of the internet has made our big, beautiful world seem smaller, closer and more connected. It has allowed me to share my street photo hobby here on Flickr with unexpected and exciting results. My recent check of my Flickr stats today revealed that Mikey G Ottawa now has 1,193,069 Flickr views. Edited this with a little cut-and-paste to show my own message here.

This didn't come out quite the way I hoped, but isn't bad, I guess. Well, not terrible anyway.
Basically, like a lot of medieval cities, the core of the old city was ringed with fortifications. Because there's a bridge flowing through town that goes out to the lake (Lake Lucerne, or Vierwaldstattersee, or however you translate "Lake of the Four Forest Cantons" into French & Italian), there were covered & fortified bridges as part of this wall, then as the wall ran up onto the hills to the north & south of the town, there were defending towers on the ridges looking down on the city and out to the surrounding countryside.
Anyway, this was taken from a modern footbridge near the old walls, trying to look up at one of the old wall towers at night. But I couldn't hold steady enough and the camera shake is distracting. Oh well.
If I had checked my stats one day earlier, I would have been sitting at exactly 250,000 Flickr views at the time.
Missed by that much!

Photos shot on the old (1970s vintage) manual Nikkormat SLR camera, digitized to PictureCD when developed back in 2002. Not very high resolution scans, but then not always very high quality photos in the first place. Oh well.
As pretty as this is, it was taken outside my window while I was in the drive-thru line at McDonald's. Go figure.
This is more interesting to me but it's quite possible that since it is more interesting to me, it would be less interesting to people.
Starting in December 2008, I started taking regular photos of the same spot on the Charles River, along Greenough Boulevard in Watertown, looking at the Allston neighborhood of Boston to the east.
At first, I tried getting a photo of this spot once a month, to track the progression of the seasons. Then, in Fall 2009, I started getting more frequent photos, to record the rapidly changing autumn foliage.
From then on, I've continued to try to get photos of this spot on a regular basis. Not daily, but usually at least 2-4 times a week. I plan to go on doing these this way indefinitely, for as long as I'm spending regular time in the area. We'll see how this goes.
One of the earlier photos shows this same chapel from the ground floor, as a straight photo. This montage from the balcony tries to get the ceiling in as well.
Since I'm not usually doing these montages on multiple levels (I usually just pan straight up or down for a vertical or horizontal panorama), optical distortion at the edges made lining this up kind of a pain -- on a less ornate background, I can cheat & blend the mismatches into a plain edge, but in this case there are no "plain" edges to mask faults behind.
If I keep this up I'm seriously going to have to learn how to use Illustrator, aren't I?

Somewhere in the past couple days I topped 1 million views on my flickr account. Thanks to all of you who have looked along the way!
Courtyard of the Louvre, looking out from the back/east wall looking out towards the Pyramid and toward Tuileries etc.
First, compare with Flickr Stats 07-02-2010, Flickr Stats 07-16-09, and Flickr Stats 07-04-08. In particular, look at the Flickr Stats 07-16-09; in both cases, the surge on the left is from the Fremont Solstice Parade, and the surge on the right is from Go Play NW.
However, to put this truly in perspective, look at Flickr Stats 06-19-11, which shows the start of this year's Fremont Solstice Parade surge. (Unfortunately I didn't get a chance to capture the stats with that spike all the way on the left side of the graph.) The surge and long tail of the Fremont Solstice Parade photos is already impressive in this graph, but then add in the 10,408 views from the first day, on 19 Jun. In fact, that one-day total is not surpassed by the cumulative total until 04 Jul—from 20 Jun to 04 Jul, the total views are 10,508.
Meanwhile, the first-day peak for Go Play NW 2011 photos is a mere 511 views. Because they were posted on the weekend, the total views may yet be comparable to last year's, but is unlikely to match the surge from 2009, and certainly will not compare at all to the Fremont Solstice Parade surge.
