This was a great stop on my visit to Los Angeles. The Los Angeles Maritime Museum is located in the old San Pedro Municipal Ferry Building at Berth 84 of the Port of Los Angeles. From their site, "The Museum is located at the foot of 6th Street in John S. Gibson Park. The park includes monuments to the US Navy heavy cruiser LOS ANGELES, the Fishing Industry Memorial, the Bloody Thursday Monument, and the American Merchant Marine Veterans Memorial. The Museum is a special facility of the City of Los Angeles, Department of Recreation and Parks." This museum is fantastic and does a great job telling the story of this great working port. Included are great artifacts depicting early maritime commerce, the fishing industry, and models of many US Navy and Commercial ships. My favorite was the shooting model used in the 1972 movie the Poseidon Adventure.

A view of the wharf with some fisherman occupied with a task at a crude bench/table. Behind one of the figures is an old cast-iron pipe used in the shafts of local mines for water drainage. These made useful mooring posts and they can still be seen around the harbour today - though I doubt whether many tourists realise what they actually are. With the coming of the tourist industry the car began to conquer all, and in 1922 the Wharf Road was constructed. Few visitors today would realise that at one time the sea virtually lapped at the shops and buildings along the front. Fore Street would then have been the main route to "downalong". It is clear that sea frequently washed over the wharf itself - note the height of the opening in the building in the middle distance. In the 1950's I remember this as 'Lanham's Sale Room'. It is now the site of the Lifeboat Inn.
