This was a great stop on my visit to Los Angeles. The Los Angeles Maritime Museum is located in the old San Pedro Municipal Ferry Building at Berth 84 of the Port of Los Angeles. From their site, "The Museum is located at the foot of 6th Street in John S. Gibson Park. The park includes monuments to the US Navy heavy cruiser LOS ANGELES, the Fishing Industry Memorial, the Bloody Thursday Monument, and the American Merchant Marine Veterans Memorial. The Museum is a special facility of the City of Los Angeles, Department of Recreation and Parks." This museum is fantastic and does a great job telling the story of this great working port. Included are great artifacts depicting early maritime commerce, the fishing industry, and models of many US Navy and Commercial ships. My favorite was the shooting model used in the 1972 movie the Poseidon Adventure.

The Gulf of Georgia Cannery was built in 1894 as a salmon cannery. Later, the facility became a herring reduction plant transforming herring to fish oil and fish meal. The herring reduction operations ceased in 1979. The Canadian government purchased the property in 1984 and opened it to the public in 1994 in celebration of the centennial of the building. The building house a museum and interpretive displays of the area's commercial fishing history. The complex is a National Historic Site of Canada.

Later in the morning we were cruising along quiet coastal roads and happened upon a giant open air fish processing operation. These tiny fish were being cooked by some sort of steamer and then being carried out in huge stacks to be left to dry out in the sun. Possibly to be made into fish sauce - we weren't sure...

Offshore a huge flotilla of fishing boats bobbed in the sea.

Collect shells inside the mangrove, collecting this kind of shell is a difficult job. They must look for the shellfish that is hidden in the mud. And it should be used without wearing protective gloves for the hands. in this way to better feel the shellfish and catch it.

A fisherman passes a bowl of fresh “charales”, in Pacanda Island, at Patzcuaro lake, Michoacan State, Mexico. The islands have been a center of the native Purhepecha people who have for generations thrived on fishing as a form of livelihood- the lake supports around 800 fishermen who fish for black sea bass, Patzcuaro chub, trout, perch and white fish or pez blanco (Kurucha Urápiti in Purepecha language) – a sacred endemic species of the lake.
