All but one of our rhododendrons are blooming and it has been so fun to see what colors have emerged. I think the previous home owners did great since we have about 1 of each color!
The title appears on the back of this photo along with "Mr. and Mrs. Guy Hickman." The gentleman in this photo is no doubt very proud of his new home and this photograph was made to preserve that special memory of having your first home as a young adult. I believe he is actually standing next to his business, which is just to the left of his home. The signs hanging from the business are a post office sign and a "We Represent Continental Tailoring" sign. Found in Ohio.
"I had always thought dogs to be playful and spirited; to me they were animals who loved to chase sticks and romp around and lick you. That is, I used to think that, until that day I met the serious dogs. When I first saw the serious dogs, they were sitting on a small hill out to the side of my house watching the sunset. One dog was standing on his hind legs, leaning his elbow on a tree, lost in melancholy thought. They all watched this particularly glorious sunset, then each sighed in turn and strolled in a pack over the hill. Were these the dogs I had thrown bones to for the last several months? These day-dreamers?
"Several days later I saw the serious dogs lunching under the willow. They were not gulping their food down like Spritzie does; they seemed almost refined. After dining they buried their trash, cleaned themselves up, and disappeared over the horizon. I waited half an hour and then took my shovel over to that willow and dug up what they had buried there: several wrappers of cheese, some half-eaten doggie biscuits, and Good Lord! . . . two empty bottles of fairly expensive Bordeaux! I turned, confused, and saw a small pamphlet lying on the ground. I picked it up and read the title, "Federal Migratory Waterfowl Stamps." "Well," I thought, "some poor stamp collector left his book here. . ." Just then, one of the serious dogs appeared and gently took the volume from my hands and padded off.
"I stopped. This was something more than just some dogs who didn't like to play fetch. I decided to secretly follow this dog. I laid about a hundred yards back and watched him. I was impressed with his courtesy to other animals and his compulsion to leave his pathway neat. If a branch had fallen over he would right it; if leaves had blown over this trail, he would brush them back onto less traveled ground.
"Then I saw him crawl through an opening in some thick brush. As I approached, I could hear the sounds of other dogs moving lightly. I moved toward the opening and cautiously peered through. I could see a few dogs staring intently at something, as though studying it. I could not make out exactly what it was so I moved in closer. I was sure not to make my presence known. As I parted some branches in the brush, I saw a most incredible sight. A fully-constructed skeleton of a cow! The construction was crude to be sure, but, missing only the head and feet, it was well-formed and highly commendable. I remembered throwing them bones now and then, and I could recall several of the dogs seemingly analyze it before accepting it. I looked along the ground and saw several of the books I had thrown out months before. They were well kept and stored upright. Most were reference, but I recognized several of the better novels. Then I noticed some dogs all facing something and sniffing judiciously like connoisseurs would sniff wine. I could not make out what they were looking at as a bush blocked my line of sight. I moved ever so slowly through the underbrush, with such caution that it took me a full ten minutes to travel five feet. Then, with some trepidation, I lifted my eyes at the object of the dogs' curiosity and saw. . . My God! . . . THE LOST MONET!"

I have already done one of these lists here so this time I thought I would do a list of my childhood, to go with this photo.
1.I lived in this house in Leigh-on-Sea until I was 9 years old when my family moved to Westcliff-on-Sea.
2.The primary school I attended recently celebrated its centenary – it’s called Chalkwell Hall Junior School. My three children also went to Chalkwell School.
3.My first teacher in 1958 was a lady called Miss Bangs.
4.My son Ivan’s first teacher at Chalkwell School in 1990 was the same Miss Bangs!
5.We used to have playground crazes at Chalkwell - memorable ones included skipping, French skipping, and swapping beads.
6.My father worked for the Midland Bank in London and commuted by train from Chalkwell Station which is beautifully situated right beside the beach. In those days people worked on Saturday mornings too.
7.My parents bought a car together with our next-door neighbours, it was a huge black Austin Princess.
8.We had a little dog called Sally, she was a sweet-natured and pretty creature.
9.My younger sister Harriet was (and still is) a tender-hearted person, and she had a succession of pets starting with mice, then guinea pigs, and finally rabbits.
10.My brother Paul was born in this house.
Needs a new paint job, but I love this house in Normal Park! You can look at a virtual tour of my dream home here: www.facebook.com/ext/share.php?sid=44312140892&h=c4tw...
Oh what I could do with over 2,000 sf! The possibilities are nearly endless!
Tell me what you think. Should we make an offer?
UPDATE 1/22/09: Elm has to go to sheriff sale, which means that it likely won't be back on the market for a LONG time. We are looking at about six months if all goes smoothly, so we are moving on. Going out tomorrow to look at some houses without Josh.
UPDATE 1/28/09: We got word that things may be moving more quickly than expected on this house. We think things may be moving faster because they know that we are seriously interested and we will move on if the process takes too long. We should know sometime next week if the deal between the banks went through.

This house was John Lennon's first home. It belonged to Stanley family - his mother, Julia's, parents.
John lived here from a few days after his birth (at Liverpool Maternity Hospital) until the age of five, in 1945, when he was unofficially 'adopted' by his aunt, Mimi, and her husband, George Smith.
Julia Lennon continued to live here until about 1949. She had become estranged from John's father, Freddie Lennon about 18 months after John's birth, and was now living here with a new partner: John 'Bobby' Dykins.
In 1979 John said of the house: "That's the first place I remember. It's a good way to start - red brick; front room never used, always curtains drawn, picture of a horse and carriage on the wall. There were only three bedrooms upstairs, one on the front side of the street, one in the back, and one teeny little room in the middle."

Including the "Pittsburgh."
This is a screen shot of The Most Unique Restaurant Menu Ever, as featured on last night's episode of The Best New Show On TV, "Kitchen Nightmares." This installment featured a wildly egotistical and delusional "chef," Sebastian, who thought that his amazing menu of 20 flavor combinations -- combined with the frozen food that he heated up in the microwave and sold to customers as his two glorious wood-burning pizza ovens glowed *just for show* -- would make him rich and famous.
Gordon Ramsay thought otherwise. Compelling television.
Update: A quick Google search confirms that Delusional Sebastian has gone back to his original menu, though it appears he is at least utilizing the wood-burning ovens for the pizzas.

Asshole is not spelled out because my mom didn't know if my little nephews would be there. If they were, she was going to tell them that it meant, "RUN FASTER ANIMAL."
("RUN FASTER ASSHOLE" comes from a sign held by a spectator that Husband saw when he ran the 2008 Cleveland Half-Marathon. He thought it was hilarious, and it sort of became the theme for his 2008 New York City Marathon run.)

The perfect reconciliation of mid-20th century design fabulousness and 21st century digital music technology: Husband has made it so iTunes can play through my parents' bitchin' stereo that they bought just after getting married in 1965.
I love making old things new again.
