European Firebug (Pyrrhocoris apterus)

I had a choice yesterday to either pick some images from the files to post or grab the camera to see if I could find anything to post today. I chose the latter!

I spotted this recently introduced Firebug on a Hibiscus leaf

Posting while I have some lunch I will catch up later this evening/tomorrow morning.

Happy Wing Wednesday

Firebugs on the Bark

On the rugged bark of an old tree, firebugs (Pyrrhocoris apterus) gather like a small red-and-black guard of early spring.

Their warning colors create a striking natural contrast against the muted tones of the tree.

Together they form a living pattern — a reminder that nature often paints in bold strokes.

Sometimes beauty is not found in perfection, but in collective energy.

Soon their season will be over :(

Firebugs – A Dance in Red

On a green stage of textured leaf, two firebugs (Pyrrhocoris apterus) perform their quiet spring ritual.

Their intense red color earned them a dramatic name, yet they are completely harmless to humans. They mostly feed on seeds and are often found in parks, especially near linden trees.

During mating season they remain connected, sometimes appearing as if each is pulling in a different direction — a small tension within natural balance.

The contrast of red and green, motion and stillness, texture and symmetry — sometimes nature designs the composition for us.

Krvave stjenice – ples u crvenom

Na zelenoj pozornici lista, dvije krvave stjenice (Pyrrhocoris apterus) plešu svoj tihi proljetni ritual.

Kontrast crvene i zelene, pokret i mir, struktura lista i grafika njihovih krila — priroda ponekad sama dizajnira savršenu kompoziciju.

European Firebug (Pyrrhocoris apterus)

The first sighting of these in Australia was in the Brimbank local council are in 2018. Not too far from us here in Wyndham local council area. I have not seen many of them but this one was running around on the Jade Plant yesterday.

The Firebug (Pyrrhocoris apterus) is a common European bug, which is on the northernmost edge of its range in Britain and is the sole member of its family (Pyrrhocoridae) to occur here. This very distinctive species is usually brachypterous in Britain, but macropterous adults have recently been recorded.

The Firebug is historically very rare and known only from a single Devon population, but many other colonies have been recently reported from Surrey, Sussex, Essex, Suffolk, Kent and Bedfordshire, most of which are probably the result of accidental introductions. The appearance of macropterous individuals capable of flight may allow the species to spread here much more effectively in the future.

The Firebug is usually associated with Tree Mallow and lime trees, feeding on the fruits. It forms dense and conspicuous aggregations in the spring, prior to mating.

Just started to test my recently purchased new macro/portrait lens. After a really long and grey winter period spring is knocking on the door with pleasant temperatures and abundant sunshine...macro season is 'live'! :)

Not a common bug here - I have photographed them before. The first sighting in Oz was in 2018 at Wyndhamvale, about 6 Km (3.5 miles) from here.

This one was doing its best to avoid being photographed.

The firebug, Pyrrhocoris apterus, is a common insect of the family Pyrrhocoridae.

They are frequently observed to form aggregations, especially as immature forms, with from tens to perhaps a hundred individuals.

This strikingly handsome bug is found throughout most of Europe. Owing to climate change however, its range is steadily extending towards more temperate regions. It is often confused with the firebug, which at first glance looks very similar.

Between 9-12mm in length and quite hairy, it is found in dry meadows and is associated with a range of plants. Although active from April to October, because it overwinters it can be seen throughout the year.
