Hundreds of firebugs on a tree. The German Wikipedia article describes them as "sociable".
Feuerwanzen: "Die Tiere leben gesellig" (Wikipedia-Artikel).
I was wandering around Celle with the kids I am teaching photography to on an activity week, when I spotted these little bug things walking around on some leaves. On closer expression I was surprised to see that they all had these outrageous areas coloured like face masks on their backs.
Any ideas as to what they are?
Thanks westpark, for identifying them as Pyrrhocoris apterus / firebug
