With the spectacular granite peaks of the Torres del Paine in the background, it is easy to overlook the small flock of rheas (Darwin's rhea, Rhea pennata} in the foreground. With their excellent cryptic colouration these large flightless birds blend in so well with the fall grasses and bushes on the pampas.

I find it really sweet that Wata and Takeshi have birthdays so close together. I rarely post on Sundays but Wata's birthday is worth it.

Steve Winwood // Blind Faith - "Can't Find My Way Home"
Taken on a gray, cold day on which I encountered snow, rain and freezing temperatures. It was great, except for almost getting stuck in the slick, sticky mud, some of which made it back home with me through the mountains.

This "cruceiro" spent years hiding in the undergrowth. It was a pleasant surprise to find it in a place I've passed hundreds of times.

Not a photo from today as it was rainy and cloudy all day. Heidi is in a bad mood, but the rain is very welcome. Spring has been too dry and warm here.
Anyway, this flower is called bugle (Ajuga reptans) and according to Wikipedia it "has been used in traditional Austrian medicine internally as a tea for the treatment of disorders related to the respiratory tract." I'm glad I decided to read a bit more before stocking up on Ajuga reptans. According to German Wikipedia it's only good for diarrhea, and given the big difference in symptoms I stopped looking further into it 😄

I find the high moors fascinating places not just for the natural beauty and weird rock formations but also because, many years ago, they were a hive of industry, principally mining or quarrying. This was taken on Bodmin Moor in Cornwall, close to the hamlet of St. Breward. As well the moorland scenery it shows a cheesewring which although resembling a man made object is actually a perfectly natural rock formation created by erosion. Close by can be seen the remains of an old mining building which overlooked an open cast mine where, probably, tin or copper would have been extracted. It is likely that the miners walked several miles to and from their homes to this mine in all weathers. I visited on a fine day but it was still a bleak and windy place. Truly, those miners worked between a rock and a hard place.
Thanks to Alice Popkorn for the use and abuse of her texture "Magic Veil".
While I knew that I was on the Wonderland and I knew where Gertrude was parked, I didn't know that I was going the wrong way..... It wasn't an unpleasant hike, just not the one I was expecting. This gem stood out and since I didn't know what I was looking at it's all the more mysterious. It turns out that this 52 foot drop of Martha here is actually a small part of a 670 foot waterfall. NW waterfall survey says that it is impossible to see it in its entirety, but most of it can be seen from Stevens Canyon Road, no pull out so be careful.
Someday I'll post a pic of the falls themselves, but I like this one because this is how you first see it, exiting the tree line and.... hello.
A long time ago, my first camera, bad focal length, low quality definition, but I find these pictures of Ecuador still have a kind of charm.
I often find these little kleptoparasites living at the edge of a Silver Argiope's web. They take some of the prey caught in the larger spider's web. I remember shooting this one. This spider was in between some benches and I had trouble getting a good angle. I normally wouldn't go spider hunting mid day at 90°F (32°C), but this was the last day of the City Nature Challenge this year and I wanted to contribute more spiders. This park is usually a good place for a few species I was missing. Got 9 different species on that trip, with at least 5 I hadn't found elsewhere during the challenge. I ended up with a total of 45 different arachnid species (though some can't be IDed to species from photos).
Genus Argyrodes
Probably Argyrodes elevatus
“By discovering nature, you discover yourself.” -Maxine Lagace’
Embracing your wild doesn’t necessarily mean being loud, partying, or doing extreme things. To me, it means realizing deeply how much I need nature and how important it is overall. It means accepting myself for everything that I am, including the dark and savage parts. It means being a bit feral when it comes to being around other people and feeling most at peace when I’m alone (or with Mike), especially at home or in the wilderness. It means feeling my best when I have dirt on my feet, wind blown hair, and skin kissed by the sun. It means having a connection to animals that I struggle with when it comes to humans. It’s that part of me that’s still a child, happy and carefree, running through the forest and fields, climbing trees and getting dirty. For me, embracing my wild means keeping that wild child part of me alive.
This patch of daisies is growing in the field behind our house and I’ve really delighted in seeing it out there.
