A trio of Cartier Railway M636s leads an empty ore train north through Quebec's Réserve faunique de Port-Cartier-Sept-Îles in June 2001. The Cartier was one of the last places on earth to see six-axle Alcos/MLWs in regular service but within a month of this photo being taken most of the M636s were replaced with brand new General Electric locomotives.

There was ambient light coming from the hostel on the right but otherwise I enjoyed this composition. It will probably be the last time I get out to the coast for a milkyway this year. I'm so glad I was able to find a night that worked!

Dedicata al mio amico Daniele

This is the last one of this series I promise!!

After the sun comes up it shines through the castle and produces amazing shadows. However I HATE blown out highlights, lens flare and shooting into the sun generally, if it's not a pretty starburst its not happening. So I think I took this a bit half heartedly thinking it wasn't going to work, this was the last shot I took before skipping down the hill.

I have since realised that two of Dorsets leading photographers were there and they did it so much better, really thinking about their point of view and going much lower down and including less of the sky.

Shows that I am still very much learning from other photographers! If this was on my school report it would say "must try harder".

Have a good week everyone x

Although it was a hopelessly gray and rainy day I made up my mind and went into the forest for a walk. After a few hours this is what happened...

Location: Rurtalsperre Schwammenauel, Germany

decided to throw my hat into the ring of black and white photos!

I also feel like I'm getting back to who I am with this one. want to do more photos capturing the beauty of movement in and with the body.

Yesterday’s murmuration in Brighton, probably a finale until November then. The starlings suddenly grouped closed to each other to scare the pair of Peregrine falcon away.

The grand finale of the annual Arlington Park fireworks in Arlington Heights, IL.

Although I have a few dozen more photos with considerable enough drama, this will be the last that I will post from the Mexican village rodeo I went to last week.

But as unreal as this looks, those are HIS eyes!!

I have so many shots of the bulls in various positions: in the air, on the ground, twisting, turning, grinding, pouncing and fully intent on ejecting their rider. What amazed me even more is that in many of the photos the bulls always looked like they were peering towards the camera, looking directly at me... as though posing for the shot!

And finally, the last day of the trip. Started off the day at Pipe Spring National Monument, which was new to me, and ended with a glorious sunset in a favorite of favorites, Zion. Pipe Spring is a deeply unique park and one of a handful of units to have a working farm on it, complete with livestock. Beyond that, it interprets the history of the southern Paiute who inhabit the region, and the Mormon settlers that came to settle here and escape religious prosecution in the 19th century. The story details the cooperation and conflict that is a hallmark of the region. Such stories are vital to understanding the United States and how we can learn from our mistakes and build stronger communities for all. And what do I need to say about Zion? Although we only planned to drive through on our way to Vegas and our flights home, Patrick and I both can’t stand Vegas…so why rush through? We spent a fantastic and relaxing afternoon and early evening chasing the fading light through the canyon and marveling at the geological wonderland before us. What a perfect way to end a trip in which we had seen so much- with a day that encapsulated the trip with history and natural grandeur. And isn’t that what the very soul of the National Park Service is, too? Again, a day of perfect encapsulation and symbolism. When I started out on this trip, I was nervous as to what state I would find our National Parks in as they come under threat. What I’ve written during this trip certainly tells that story. What I found was heartening- people love their parks. People will speak up for their parks. People know that their parks tell the full story of the United States, from the bloody and brutal, to the grand and the naturally magnificent. This is engrained into our culture. National Parks are America in every sense of the word- they show what we are and they are part of what we believe what we should be. And what we should maintain and cherish and interpret. It’s going to take a lot more than this single administration of myopia to stop that. Keep fighting. Keep speaking up. These lands are your lands. These stories are your stories. And they always will be. If we keep fighting.

Sadly, I've run out of photos to post from my Docklands photo walk. This is the last in this series. I need to organise another outing soon.

A shot from recently concluded national day celebrations of Qatar

Qatar National Day takes place every year on Dec. 18.

It marks the day in 1878 that Sheikh Jassim Bin Mohammad Bin Thani succeeded his father as leader of the tribes of Qatar.

Fighting for independence from the Ottomans, the British and other Arabian Peninsula tribes, Sheikh Jassim is considered the founder of Qatar for unifying oft-divided local tribes under his leadership, and winning autonomy for them.

A rare two-engine, Saturday edition of the YPR60B rumbles past CY Tower crossing 5 Lead to 2 towards Mayfair to head up to the northwest side and switch the Cragin Lead picking off where the previous day's local ended. With the shutdown of the Tribune printing press and the construction of Bally's Casino looming, the days of switching operations east of Mayfair are possibly numbered.
