The Black Country Living Museum (formerly The Black Country Museum) is an open-air museum of rebuilt historic buildings in Dudley in the West Midlands of England. It is located in the centre of the Black Country, 10 miles west of Birmingham. The museum occupies 105,000 square metres (26 acres) of former industrial land partly reclaimed from a former railway goods yard, disused lime kilns, canal arm and former coal pits.

The museum opened to the public in 1978, and has since added over 50 shops, houses and other industrial buildings from around the Metropolitan Boroughs of Dudley, Sandwell and Walsall and the City of Wolverhampton (collectively known as the Black Country); mainly in a specially built village. Most buildings were relocated from their original sites to form a base from where demonstrators portray life spanning 300 years of history, with a focus on 1850-1950.

The museum is constantly improving as new exhibits, especially buildings, are being added.

The museum is close to the site where Dud Dudley first mastered the technique of smelting iron with coal instead of wood charcoal and making iron enough for industrial use.

Having a claim to be "the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution", the Black Country is famous for its wide range of midsteel-based products from nails to the anchor and anchor chain for the Titanic.

The site's coal mining heritage is shown by an underground drift and colliery surface buildings. The museum has a working replica of a Newcomen atmospheric engine which was first successfully put to use in Tipton in 1712. The museum's reconstruction was based on a print engraved by Thomas Barney, filemaker of Wolverhampton, in 1719.

Electric trams and trolleybuses transport visitors from the entrance to the village where thirty domestic and industrial buildings have been relocated close to the canal basin. The museum is one of three in the UK with working trolleybuses.

The route to the village passes the Cast Iron Houses and a 1930s fairground. A narrowboat operated by Dudley Canal Trust makes trips on the Dudley Canal and into the Dudley Tunnel

On 16 February 2012, the museum's collection was awarded designated status by Arts Council England (ACE), a mark of distinction celebrating its unique national and international importance.

The museum is run by the Black Country Living Museum Trust, a registered charity under English law.

This is a panorama of my 2nd floor interior office at Apple's Infinite Loop campus taken in 1998. I'd most recently been the Evangelist for Copland, as evidenced by the various Mac OS 8 labeled items, such as the water and beer bottles and cup.

You can also see an OpenDoc frisbee, my MacHack award (the hammer and chisel which airport security were not thrilled about), early sketches of a prior Developer CD just above a toy Mac OS 8-branded 18-wheeler truck, which Claris presented to the Apple folks involved in the release.

You can't read it, but on my door you can see a letter from an Apple customers who wrote to me who spoke japanese, but little english. The main point of his missive is encapsulated in the sign below it: "Be Survival Apple."

The series of business card-sized tickets laid out on an 8.5x11" sheet with a black border, above and to the left of the frisbee are the tickets I created (using FileMaker to automatically number them) to which gave developers access to the Copland lab to try their code.

Over 2000 developers did so and the effect was exactly as I was instructed by my boss to achieve. They all came away understanding why they weren't going to be taking a copy of Copland home at WWDC.

From what I can tell, that looks like a PowerBook 5300 and a Newton 2100. To the right, on the desk, is a QuickTime VR rig. I don't think I used that 5300 for very long. What a beast.

The Mr. Potatohead on shelf to the right was, if I recall correctly, a Secret Santa gift with the joke having to do with OpenDoc and components.

The Lava lamp is a one of a kind. I requested it from the Lava Light company to see how it would look as an Apple Design Award. I had it sent with no coloration at all in all white. Turns out when you take the coloration out of the lava and liquid (as the Lava folk were adamant to call it), it just looks like fat floating in oil. And thus ended a possible partnership between the Lava Light company and Apple, Inc.

You can't blame me for trying.

One more thing: the cubicle directly across the hall from this office used to be one of several open lounge areas, but as Apple employee numbers rose these were filled in with cubes. They weren’t so bad as they had direct access to a small deck that opened off of the lounges.

I spend much of each day looking at a computer screen, doing things that would be mundane to most programmers and incomprehensible to non-programmers.

In this particular case, I've just implemented a WYSIWYG editor inside a web viewer in Filemaker. It's called by referencing a PHP script (leftmost window (which is inside an RDP window) which pulls both the editor source (right window) and the data from the database in order to display it properly.

A non-trivial portion of my job is creating tools to get around limitations of other tools.

For the next three days I'm attending a FileMaker developer conference, so my photos will likely continue to be rather boring.

The Alabama Eye Bank has the unique job of helping those with corneal blindness to see again. . As the only Eye Bank in Alabama, the organization is available 24 hours a day to respond when a healthcare facility, such as a hospital, calls to say a family has decided to provide the “Gift of Sight.” The Alabama Eye Bank dispatches a technician to surgically retrieve the donor’s cornea. This amazing tissue can be used to replace a cornea that has been injured or diseased. Following retrieval, the Eye Bank carefully evaluates the tissue and distributes it to a corneal surgeon who will transplant it.

A flexible platform for running a complex organization

To help run the facility 24/7, Cattell has built a solution that uses the full FileMaker Platform. The solution manages referrals, donors, tissues, accounts, contacts, distribution and online surgery scheduling. It creates invoices that QuickBooks distributes. The FileMaker Platform handles employee benefits, including time off, vacation and sick leave.
