There are lots of dim gas filaments at west side of the Cygnus nebula complex. I have spent this Autumn season by shooting them. Due to close proximity of brighter and more eye catching nebulae in Cygnus, this area is not very commonly imaged.

The Nymphaeaceae are aquatic, rhizomatous herbs. The family is further characterized by scattered vascular bundles in the stems, and frequent presence of latex, usually with distinct, stellate-branched sclereids projecting into the air canals. Hairs are simple, usually producing mucilage (slime). Leaves are alternate and spiral, opposite or occasionally whorled, simple, peltate or nearly so, entire to toothed or dissected, short to long Petiole (botanyiolate), with blade submerged, floating or emergent, with palmate to pinnate venation. Stipules are either present or absent. Flowers are solitary, bisexual, radial, with a long pedicel and usually floating or raised above the surface of the water, with girdling vascular bundles in receptacle. Tepals are 4-12, distinct to connate, imbricate, and often petal-like. Petals lacks or 8 to numerous, inconspicuous to showy, often intergrading with stamens. Stamens are 3 to numerous, the innermost sometimes represented by staminodes. Filaments are distinct, free or adnate to petaloid staminodes, slender and well differentiated from anthers to laminar and poorly differentiated from anthers; pollen grains usually monosulcate or lacking apertures. Carpels are 3 to numerous, distinct or connate. Fruit is an aggregate of nuts, a berry, or an irregularly dehiscent fleshy capsule. Seeds are often arillate, more or less lacking endosperm.

I want to get to grips with layering for an idea I have so here is a little experiment for this evening. Trying to suss out how to get the glass on top of the cat so it appears in the bulb. Any tips much appreciated!

Mais nous perdrions surement ces jolis filaments, qui mettent au firmament tout ce que nous avons d'inconséquent.

La nature est assez suprenante dans ses textures et ses ressemblances. Les filaments de cette asclépiade ressemblent à une mèche de cheveux.

 

Nature is quite surprising range in its textures and similarities. The filaments of the milkweed looks like a lock of hair.

Looking up at a light fixture outside my house a very close up macro of the inside of a light bulb in the fixture. The cloudy stuff is the dirt on the bulb and how the light interacts with it.

Wow! This just hit my highest explore position ever thanks everyone!

This week the Sun featured a very long filament that stretched at least half way across the Sun (Oct. 20-22, 2015). Filaments are elongated clouds of plasma that are tethered above the Sun by magnetic forces. They are often unstable and usually break apart in less than a week, though they can last longer than that. Filaments are darker than most of the SunÕs surface when viewed in extreme ultraviolet light, as it is here. Credit: Solar Dynamics Observatory, NASA.

These are modern bulbs with an old filament style.

This i an LED so super efficient. Edison would be proud

There it was... parachute like with long purple filaments dotted with tiny drops of water. And the flower is one foot across!

 

And here I was, with my camera around my neck, groping around in the steamy hot Rare Plant House searching for a metal tag to identify this amazing flower extravaganza! And, it was Dog Day so I had my pup Honey watching me, tipping her head to the right and the left curious.

 

The flowers are black to purplish white, nodding on long pedicels, 2 bracts broadly ovate and winglike, 2 smaller bracts perpendicular to the others, black, greenish or reddish. Bracteoles threadlike, 6 - 8 inches long. Leaves basal, lanceolate, glossy dark green blade tapering down the petiole.

 

The genus Tacca, which includes the Bat flowers and Arrowroot, consists of ten species of flowering plants in the order Dioscoreales, native to tropical regions of Africa, Australia, and south-eastern Asia. In older texts, the genus was treated in its own family Taccaceae, but the 2003 APG II system incorporates it into the family Dioscoreaceae. Taccaceae is native to Malaysia.
