First experiments with burning filaments. Ran out of bulbs before i got the expoure nailed down so had to tinker in lightroom a little.
This is part of an exercise to define the path of a particular spline (or curve) over the skin of an egg-shaped surface of revolution. It was critical to be able to predict exactly where the path of the spline went as it was calculated in a computer program, and then electonically transferred to the three-dimensional model for analysis and verification. This project began in 1993 as a method of programming a 7–Axis filament winding machine to produce asymmetrical and irregular forms; and this work was done as part of proving the fibre path software. The winding path software installed on the machine's controller was limited to simple solids of revolution, such as cylinders, cones and spheres — so this work was done to wind surfaces that did not fit into that category.
I received this arrangement from a customer as a thank you gift. The flowers were so tightly packed together as buds, and it has been a joy taking pictures of them as they have opened. In fact, I took so many shots I started to wonder what in the world I would start to call each of them: They had far too much personality to remain photo numbers.
I started to feel for the ones which were covered up by the immense lilies, and soon imagined they were talking to each other, jostling and fretting in their white envy of each other, saying things they did not think I could hear…
And as the days pass the buds continue to open as elders fade…

Here's a view into where the filament rides. The bolt goes into the gap in the middle. I have sanded off the edges of the wood on the central part to keep it from abrading the filament, as well as the (unseen) edges of the bearing holes.
a slightly different shot of the same lily from yesterday. i wanted to show more of the arc of the filaments and their shadow, but the overall result was less interesting than the detail.
