As introduction, textile silks are often produced from the cocoons churned by the larvae of the MULBERRY SILKWORM.
In general commercial silks are produced through the following processes:-
(a) SERICULTURE - Cultivation of silkworms.
(b) HATCHING OF EGGS - The tiny eggs of silkworm moths are incubated for about 10 days until they hatch into a larvae (caterpillar)
(c) FEEDING - For about period of 6 weeks, the larvae are fed huge amounts of chopped mulberry leaves, during which it sheds its skin 4 times until it is ready to spin the cocoon
(d) SPINNING THE COCOON - Over the next 4 days, the worm rotates its body in a figure 8 movement constructing a cocoon, and producing silk filaments
(e) REELING THE FILAMENT - Cocoon is treated with boiling water, and silk is unbound from the cocoon by softening the sericin, and silk filaments are then reeled from the cocoons, one strand at a time.
(f) THROWING - Raw silks are then twisted into strands sufficiently strong for weaving or knitting...
Which then makes me ponder, if there are any other insects that produces silk (apart from silkworms)? Here's your homework, do a little research, and let me know :)

The dream begins with a teacher who believes in you, who tugs and pushes and leads you to the next plateau, sometimes poking you with a sharp stick called "truth"
Ah, the time of year, when final grades are due and students politic for a couple of extra points that would move them from one letter grade to the next and teachers grapple with what that might truly mean for the student. A math teacher friend who lives in a more 'black/white' world points to the calculations, but my world tends to be more gray. Using rubrics and being very transparent about the evaluation system and formative feedback from the beginning appears to do little for those who are more interested in a grade than in learning. The dilemma is compounded when the students are prospective teachers, but in the end, the sharp thorns balance [to the best of my ability] with the beauty in the eye of nature. Naples, FL

Taking pictures of a small light bulb, I noticed the free end of the filament vibrating rapidly.It was a complete blur, and added to the shot...
Two purple-gelled flashes (580EX (thanks, Alan!) and 580EXII) @ 1/16 to left and right with baffles to keep the background dark, triggered via ST-E2.
The significant change compared to previous efforts was dumping the softbox and using the flash direct, which allows winding back the flash power a bit.

From red to mixed red/black to black. A significant amount of old filament remains present in the hot end after removing the supply.
