The Sun sported a very long filament that stretched out over 500,000 miles (800,000 km) and was visible for several days (June 3-4, 2014). It broke apart and dissipated soon after the end of the video clip. Filaments are tenuous strands of plasma held above the Sun's surface by magnetic forces. They appear darker because their temperature is somewhat cooler than that of the SunÕs surface. Especially after a rain, the macro world of the forest comes alive.

These lights are a hipster cafe cliche, but I do love them for shots like this.

We're Here looking at Light Bulbs!

Usually eruptions are attractive as a view of prominences, less so as filaments. But this high-contrast structure showed a fine segmentation. For a few moments the seeing was fair - a lucky moment.

Part of a long solar filament rose up, formed a big loop, and then broke away from the Sun (Nov. 18, 2014). Notoriously unstable, filaments are long strands of plasma held above the Sun by powerful magnetic forces. The break away was also associated with a coronal mass ejection. Today's Sun, crackling with filaments and really coming to life, contrasting with the moon from a few weeks ago. All taken with the Philips webcam and stitched together in PS CS3.

Because of the way the Sony NEX-5 is designed, pixel-level Live View works only when the camera is on a tripod. For hand-held photography, you are better off taking your chances looking at the full image on the LCD back. That is the way I have been shooting almost all of the NEX-5 images I have been posting.

 

Here, I tried to focus on the light bulbs inside the lamp. I would have been pleased to just see the bulbs in good focus. I was surprised that I even got the filaments in good focus.
