According to Wikipedia, banyan is a fig that starts its life as an epiphyte when its seeds germinate in the cracks and crevices on a host tree (or on structures like buildings and bridges). The seeds of banyans are dispersed by fruit-eating birds. The seeds germinate and send down roots towards the ground, and may envelope part of the host tree or building structure with their roots, giving them the casual name of "strangler fig" - something this photo should illustrate well!
What looks like a whole clump of trees in this panorama is in fact just one single tree.
The Great Banyan Tree is over two hundred and fifty years old and covers about 14,500 square meters of land (3.5 acres) in the Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose Botanical Garden near Kolkata (Calcutta), making it the widest tree in the world.
The banyan (Ficus benghalensis) is type strangler fig it starts life as an epiphyte, a fruit eating bird such as a hornbill that has eaten a fig deposits the seed in its droppings onto a branch high up in another tree, there the seed will germinate and as the fig seedling grows it produces aerial roots which will find their way down to the ground. The roots will grow around the host tree in a kind of lattice until eventually they completely smother the tree, this tree will die and rot away leaving the banyan in its place. Strangler figs are actually what are known as hemiepiphytes because they are only epiphytic for the first stage of their life once they have rooted into the ground they cease to be epiphytes. To support its branches as they spread out the banyan will put down more aerial roots or what are known as prop roots, they will continue to grow and in effect form new trees, if as in the case of the Great Banyan the original main trunk has been lost and has rotted away. Although they may then appear to be separate trees they are all clones genetically identical to the original to the original fig tree from which they came.
