Apprenticeship vacancies have fallen by a fifth while applications have increased by a third, according to new government statistics

The number of apprenticeship vacancies being advertised has dropped by more than 20 per cent, with providers believing that employers are holding back on recruitment in the run-up to the introduction of the apprenticeship levy.

Data published by the government last week showed that 50,070 apprenticeship vacancies were posted on the Recruit an Apprentice website, which allows training providers to post vacancies and manage applications, in the three months from August to October 2016. This compared with 62,880 in the same period the previous year, and it is the first time the figure has dropped in this quarter for eight years.

However, the figures also reveal that the number of applications has increased by 35 per cent from last year, from 425,020 in the first quarter of 2015-16 to 575,610 in the equivalent period in 2016-17. Of these, there was an increase of more than 100,000 in the applications from 16- to 18-year-olds.

According to the Association of Employment and Learning Providers (AELP), the drop in vacancies posted could be down to the forthcoming introduction of the levy in April, which will change the way apprenticeships are funded. While currently, for example, employers have to fund a third of the cost of the Trailblazer apprenticeships, from April levy payers will receive a 10 per cent top-up on their levy contribution to fund apprenticeships, and non-levy paying employers will be expected to pay 10 per cent of the cost of an apprenticeship.

‘Hopefully numbers will recover’

AELP chief executive Mark Dawe told TES that providers were reporting a lag in recruitment because of the difference between current funding arrangements and the ones coming into effect in May.

“It’s particularly hard to persuade a finance director to sign off vacancies under the new standards now, when the 33 per cent employer contribution is soon to disappear,” he said. “While we still have over half a million young people unemployed, the lag is very unfortunate but most would agree that the new funding regime is more attractive than the Trailblazer one so hopefully numbers overall will recover.”

Mr Dawe added that providers were waiting to hear if they had secured a contract from the Skills Funding Agency to deliver apprenticeships to non-levy payers. Uncertainty was also being created by providers having to wait to learn whether they have been approved for the new register of providers. “All of this is creating uncertainty and a reluctance on the part of some to take the risk of recruiting,” he added.

In Star Wars Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back (Irvin Kershner, 1980), the adventure continues that started in Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope (George Lucas, 1977). It is the fifth, but second made, instalment in the Star Wars series. The screenplay was written by Leigh Brackett and Lawrence Kasdan.

Three years have passed since Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope (George Lucas, 1977). In Star Wars Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back (Irvin Kershner, 1980), Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) and Han Solo (Harrison Ford) are now officially members of the Rebels, holed up on the ice planet Hoth. However, Han is wanted en masse by bounty hunters because of his debt to Jabba the Hutt. Moreover, the Galactic Empire is bent on revenge after the destruction of the Death Star and has launched a massive search for the rebels. On Hoth, Luke is attacked by a wampa. The latter takes the unconscious Luke to an ice cave, where Luke (having woken up again) cuts off the wampa's arm with his lightsaber and flees outside. At the Rebel Alliance on the same planet, Han notices that Luke is not coming back, and goes looking for him. While Han is on a quest, Luke sees the ghost of his old teacher Obi-Wan Kenobi. The latter tells him to go to the planet Dagobah to look for Yoda, the last surviving Jedi master. He can train Luke further. Then Obi-Wan's ghost disappears and Han arrives. Luke and Han are rescued by a snow speeder, which takes them back to the Rebel Alliance. The Rebels face an attack by the Imperial forces and its AT-AT walkers and they are brutally overpowered by the Empire. While Han Solo, Chewbacca (Peter Mayhew), Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher) and C-3PO (Anthony Daniels) escape in the damaged Millennium Falcon. Luke Skywalker travels with R2-D2 (Kenny baker) to Dagobah in search of Yoda (voice of Frank Oz). Only with the Jedi Master's help will Luke survive when the Dark Side of the Force beckons him into the ultimate duel with Darth Vader. Luke begins Jedi training with Yoda, while his friends are pursued across the galaxy by Darth Vader (David Prowse and the voice of James Earl Jones) and bounty hunter Boba Fett (Jeremy Bulloch).

George Lucas had originally planned to only executive produce and finance Star Wars Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back (1980), leaving the directorial duties in the hands of Irvin Kershner and day-to-day producing duties to Gary Kurtz. Directing Star Wars (1977) had left Lucas exhausted and sick, and he had intended to take time off to start to focus on the expansion of the Lucasfilm company and spending more time with his then-wife Marcia Lucas so that they could start a family and finish construction on Skywalker Ranch. In order to avoid sharing creative rights, George Lucas decided to avoid using a major studio to finance Star Wars Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back (Irvin Kershner, 1980). Instead, he bankrolled the $18 million production himself, using a combination of his profits from Star Wars (George Lucas, 1977) and a bank loan. Although the move was risky, it would later pay off several times over. However, when production on The Empire Strikes Back (1980) ran over budget and behind schedule, Lucas had to step in and take a more hands-on role, going on location to oversee filming and even directing portions of the film. A disastrous rough cut of the film proved to be incoherent during screenings, and facing the possibility of financial ruin, Lucas then re-edited the film himself with even worse results. Extensive re-shoots and further post-production effects work put enormous strain on his health, his marriage, and his relationships with Kershner and Kurtz. To preserve the dramatic opening of the Star Wars films, George Lucas insisted on moving all the credits to the end of the film. However, although the Writers' Guild and Directors' Guild had begrudgingly allowed this on Star Wars (1977) because that film wasn't expected to be very successful, they resented the trend being continued on the sequel. First, they tried to pull the film from release but were unsuccessful. They then fined Lucas heavily and tried to fine Irvin Kershner, but Lucas paid all of the fines himself (nearly $250,000). Lucas then bitterly dropped his membership in the Writers' Guild, Directors' Guild, and the Motion Picture Association of America, a move that has hindered his hiring choices for later films.

A new character was Yoda, originally designed by British make-up artist Stuart Freeborn and voiced by Frank Oz. In the original Star Wars trilogy, he is realised as a puppet, controlled by Oz. The Dagobah set needed to be elevated to give Frank Oz and three other puppeteers room to control the Yoda puppet from below. For proper interaction, Mark Hamill was given an earpiece so he could hear Oz doing Yoda's voice. On numerous occasions, director Irvin Kershner would give a direction to Yoda by mistake, and Oz would have to remind him who to speak to. Harrison Ford wanted Han Solo to die at the end of this second film, and he did not want to play the character again. When Star Wars (1977) was made, Carrie Fisher and Mark Hamill were signed for a three-movie deal, but Ford refused since the character had played his part already in the second film. Instead of killing off the character, George Lucas had a different idea. He opted for Han to be frozen in carbonite, in case Ford had a change of heart and agreed to return in the third film, the character would be revived. And yes, Han Solo still had a heroic part to play in Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi (Richard Marquand, 1983). Lucas recovered his investment within three months of the release of Star Wars Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back (1980). After the various increases in budget, the film became one of the most expensive of its day and after the bank threatened to pull his loan, George Lucas was forced to approach Twentieth Century Fox. Lucas made a deal with the studio to secure the loan in exchange for paying the studio more money but without the loss of his sequel and merchandising rights. After the film's box-office success, unhappiness at the studio over the deal's generosity to Lucas caused studio president Alan Ladd, Jr. to quit. Lucas, however, showed gratitude far beyond the Hollywood norm by sharing the profits with his employees (nearly $5 million in bonuses). Though the film proved to be an enormous commercial and critical success, George Lucas would never work with Gary Kurtz again, and his marriage with Marcia Lucas dissolved a couple of years later.

Model "US Truck T1 MkII" is build with LEGO® in scale 1:17,5 and motorized using LEGO® Power Functions. It is not build after a specific brand or type of truck. This build represents the more aerodynamic US truck models like for example the Freightliner Cascadia.

The truck features: solid axle suspension on all axles, PF powered driving with power transmitted independently to both rear axles, Ackerman geometry on steering axle, Servo powered steering, fully functional fifth wheel, modeled engine, detailed cabin interior and 3 light units.

Also can you build it yourself. To do so you can buy the building instructions and check the inventory/parts lists!.

The LEGO® Power Functions® Servo is used to enable the steering. Aligned with the trucks chassis the Servo is sitting inside of the cabin right behind the modeled engine in between both seats. With a 90 degrees conversion the motion of the Servo is transferred to the steering axle.

This truck model is powered by a CAT® CT15 which is revealed with the hood opened and its yellow color makes is an eye catcher. This power source is an inline 6 cylinder engine with a displacement of 15.21L. With a horsepower range from 450 up to 550 HP and this engine has a torque range from 1550 to 1850 lb-ft. (1202 - 2508 Nm) at 1200 rpm peak torque.

The modeled engine is a small object that really improves the realism of this model. The engine is very nice to build and to give it those realistic looks a total number of about 120 parts is used. Engine is detailed with for example engine oil dipstick, fan, fan belt, pulleys, hoses, oil filters including by-pass oil filter, turbo, exhaust manifold and so on. Together with much more engine bay details which are added the looks are phenomenal. These include break fluid reservoir, windshield washer container, internal air cleaner system and steering shaft.

A lot of detail is added to the cabin's interior as well in the colors Tan and Dark Bluish Gray. By opening this model’s doors one can access the cabin. Openable doors give the model very realistic looks and makes the detailed interior visible. The interior's colors really standout because of the rather dark color scheme of the truck's body work.

Dark Bluish Gray is used for both the interior and the exterior in order to link both color palettes. For the driver's comfort the interior has gauges, switches, speakers, cup holders, comfortable seats. Other details are a glove compartment, more compartments in both doors, angled dash and gauge panel, a steering wheel and a gear shift.

The Fifth Goal was a zine unlike any other because it was made by a one-of-kind individual.

Veagan, hardcore muscian, and graffiti writer Riot from Utah put together a punk-rock style cut and paste zine that was a modgepodge of graffiti, veagan recipes, band reviews, interviews and anything else of interest at the time.

Sadly, in 2005 Riot passed away in a tragic spelunking accident leaving a void in the Utah and American freight graffiti scenes, his local hard-core music scene, the zine trading world, and in the hearts of those of us who considered him a friend.

There are now five Duple 425s in the Quicksilver fleet, with a sixth to come when I build the Paragon kit version. 931 ELC is another scratchbuilt example, which was purchased from Southwestbus back in March but has only just entered service as it wasn't in particularly good condition. The vehicle has clearly led a hard life and the front panel is from a Berkhof Excellence, presumably fitted by a previous operator.

.... Saks Fifth Avenue ( Department Store ) has become a Land of 1000 Delights, an enchanting landscape of colorful candy and festive fashion this holiday season. Jumbo swirl lollipops, whipped cotton candy and mounds of rock candy are just some of the delicious décor. Toronto's flagship department store has six windows displaying a series of “Candy Couture” dresses. Each lavish dress, created by a notable designer, evokes of a favorite holiday treat, including cotton candy, peppermint sticks, and cake frosting ....

God made all the sea creatures on the fifth day of creation including the Mantis Shrimp.

Saw it swimming at our 5m safety stop! Couldn't believe my eyes and got me wondering why it wasn't crawling on the sandy bottom as it should be.

Sure made my 3mins all very worthwhile!

Apparently I heard, its just hatched out of its plankton and will be swimming around the shallows before it grows bigger into the next stage and settle back onto the ocean floor as an adult mantis. Extraordinary!
