Fidget was a bit naughty at the vet today, so she had to be sedated... The song was on when we got back in the car to head home... so very appropriate.

nfinity Fidget Bracelet by Emily L. J. Boyd (Stirling Silver and 9ct Gold)
I made something else over Christmas, for my dad to give gran. The fidget bracelets were actually kind of inspired by gran, and her ability to wear more bracelets than anyone I know and indeed her inability to sit still, so the bracelets I call fidget all have kinetic elements which run around the band.
I've been wanting to do one as an infinity bracelet for a while so this was my excuse.

Fidget Pie from Broadhurst's Pie Shop Hurdsfield Road Macclesfield
Fidget Pie is a traditional English recipe for a pie served in the fields to the workers busy bringing in the harvest. There is some confusion about how Fidget Pie got its name. Some say that it is a corruption of the Anglo-Saxon for five-sided or five-cornered (fif-ecgede) the shape in which the pie was originally baked. Others say it is derived from the word “fitch”, an old word for polecat.

I'm exploring some stock black and white styles. They're clichés, really, but they became clichés because they're powerful. Forgive me if they look kind of exaggerated. I'm just exploring and sometimes that leads to a heavy hand on the brush.
Both the kids have been mucking about with their fidget spinners for the past week or so.
I've seen these growing in popularity over the past few months with the 3D printing community and now they're readily available in local shops.
I quite like them personally, although I find it quite funny that schools are starting to ban them as they're finding them too distracting.

Tyler in his Peter costume from chronicles of Narnia and Emilio in a soldier costume. Kiko the Chihuahua as himself. I really blew the opportunity to dress him up this year. To make up for it I am going to dress him up a lot this coming year...

Finished laying out the quilt. I always take a picture of the quilt at this stage as a point of reference (e.g., if a label with the row number comes off).
*~*~*~*
DETAILS ABOUT THE QUILT:
The quilt is made up of 5" x 5" squares of fabrics that have different textures. They all are either blue, green, purple, and/or gold in color (so there's some unity or color scheme). ... See More
I had my dad pick out pictures that were meaningful to him. He did this process twice - the second time finding some more pictures that he forgot to include the first time.
As I looked through them, I noticed that he didn't have some that I KNOW would have been meaingful. Asked him if he wanted to include (for example) the one of him with his steer. "YES!" he said. "But I couldn't find it."
So we went through one of his old scrapbooks together and any picture he stopped to talk about and share a good memory about, I took out. We came to a picture of his mom and dad when they were much younger and in a loving embrace (probably in their 40s). All he managed to get out before the tears started coming were, "They loved each other so much."
I scanned all the pictures he chose plus the ones we found together in the scrapbook. Put the images into a Microsoft Word document making sure that the pictures were no larger than 4" x 4". Printed them on fabric that has a heat-set backing (got it at Office Max).
Ironed the pictures onto 5" x 5" white cotton fabric squares so they stand out from the other quilt squares.
Sewed all the squares and rows together. Hand sewed some "fidget items" onto 1 square in every other row. For example, in one row are 2 gold angels (they have a shank on the back - like buttons) to represent his parents. In another row are 5 buttons to represent 5 people in his family.
Assembled and sewed the quilt together - the top, fiberfill middle (didn't want to use wool like I normally do just in case the quilt needs to be washed), and soft fleece backing (another texture - and the part that will be next to his body).
I secured all 3 layers together by putting yarn where the squares meet and knotting it. Not only does the yarn ensure the fiberfill stays in place, but adds another element of "fidget items" - things he can touch and manipulate as the disease progresses.
We give Fidget a close trim in the summer as part of her allergy regimen. She still grows out big hair for the winter, though she doesn't need so much of it now that she has retired.
She's doing better after two years of injections and many meticulously controlled modifications to her treatment . She's down to 5mg of prednisone (evil stuff) every other day along with daily H1 and H2 antihistamines. This is the first year that she's gotten so far into the spring without either a relapse or a much higher prednisone dosage. The next couple of months will be telling. Summer is the worst time for hot spots, and her current treatment regime hasn't been tested in the heat.
Even at these relatively tiny doses, prednisone may give her Cushing's or diabetes eventually, so we're always tapering it to see how low we can take the dose.
I am instructed by how lightly Fidget carries the weight of illness and how solicitous she is of other's burdens. Fidget is not a healthy dog, but she is one of the calmest and kindest beings I've ever known.

Had I not had to have a second knee surgery in 2008, and my fourth overall on my left knee, I would have been at the Rose Bowl game today - of course I can't go the year we have enough tickets for everyone.
While I was sad to be missing out on the festivities in Pasadena today, it was fun to watch in high definition on TV with my parents. We got all of the backstory and stats, and got to see all of the replays. I'm extremely proud of the Men of Troy, especially all of the seniors who came back for their fourth or fifth seasons to lead this team to their third straight Rose Bowl victory, as well as graduate with a degree from a great university.
The knee is hanging in there - I think the "leaking" from the lateral incision has slowed almost to a stop, but I also think the bouncing and fidgeting and cheering for the team during the game made it super sore. I ended up taking one of my painkillers and am now sitting here with ice on it.
My wish for 2009 is that the family stays healthy, that we have no orthopedic or otherwise surgeries, and that I manage to make it through another year of daily photos. :) Shallow, yes, I know, but I was kind of impressed with myself for doing it in 2008 (unofficially on Flickr).
Fight On! Beat the Spartans! (Ack! Football season is over?!?! Oh, wait, we've got the Senior Bowl, the East-West Shrine Game, the combine, the draft, and spring ball....and THEN we go into the dead season...).
