I think this ‘swag’ came from a school science fair we attended years ago. It’s a small plastic fidget spinner.

I’ve designed so many merch items across the years for clients, you would have think I would have kept some!

Yes. Another fidget spinner. And another whirlgig? Well, not quite. It's a rotating spintop-like thingy that isn't a real spintop which I've placed onto a rotating fidget spinner. So what is this spintop that isn't a spintop? It's a transparent part of my moon globe which I don't use on the moon globe, because I use the moon globe as a decorative lamp hanging from the ceiling. That's where a moon belongs, doesn't it? When I disassembled the moon globe to turn it into a lamp I noticed that the small piece at the bottom (and does an orb have a bottom?) that connects the globe with its stand and makes the globe spin around its axis actually makes a perfect spintop. I've always wanted to use this thingy – how about "moonspin"? – for an MM theme. But how should I make the motion visible with an item that is transparent and runs so smoothly that you can hardly see any motion? I used my makeshift colour filters for some colourful accents and then I put the moonspin onto the non-rotating centre part of the rainbow coloured fidget spinner (and the fidget spinner also added some extra mortion blur). I got the best result when I waited until the moonspin got slower and began to wobble – just before it stopped to rotate.

This was actually only a test shot, but I didn't have much time to do more this weekend (or Monday), so I decided to stick to it, because while it's not exactly an original idea for the theme, I like the outcome. What I also like is how well the IBIS of my camera works, because this, again, is a handheld image. I didn't use an ND filter, because I've taken the capture last evening when it was already dark outside. Since it was only a testshot I also didn't bother to place the fidget spinner and the moonspin on / against a "proper" background, but just grabbed the black velvet adhesive foil I'd bought recently to repair the palm rest of my keyboard, propped it against a vase and put the spinning thingies in front of it. Which is the reason this moonspin rotates in Fuzziverse, because the velvet foil, while nice to the touch (as it should be), is fuzzy. Pleasantly fuzzy and soft for my hands, fuzziverse fuzzy in a macro image. Processed, as usual, in DXO PhotoLab 4, then I went into Luminar AI to enhance the details and saturation, and finally into Analog Efex – and the white vignette actually is an accident, but I think it added more depth to the image than a totally black background would have. I also like how the vignette highlighted some of the velvety fluff which added a nice starry look :)

The "moonspin" is 4,5 cm / 1,77 inches in diameter, so I had to crop the image quite considerably (and I really didn't like to do that this time, because I think the image looks nicer with more negative space, but it's "To be in MMs or not to be in MMs", isn't it?), so the width here is exactly 3 inches.

Happy Macro Monday, Everyone, and have a nice and safe week ahead!

This little adventurous branch hung off just a bit and fidgeted in the wind until I finally managed to catch it vertically. It comes from an Irish juniper, where it may have become too dark or too narrow. Or both.

It's exactly a year today when we had to start working from home due to the impending impact of COVID. It's quite fitting that this week's theme is "Motion Blur" The past year has been a blur. We could however still focus on the good things. HMM!

This guy was fidgeting around in the brush on the family fen farm and I'm sure there were some fledglings nearby, but they never showed their baby faces.

I think most people must know what a Fidget Spinner is by now. They seem to be everywhere these days. Just in case, I found this blurb online: "Fidget spinners are toys initially created to relieve stress. This toy helps to calm nerves and helps you to relax; it also helps to ease anxiety. " It was a very stressful photoshoot. :)

I've had a few weeks of poor luck locating "my" chamois, but today they were back to one of their favorite spots, seemed to recognize me and even posed nicely. That's when you have to stop and wonder what's wrong... I did wonder about the blurry results, but blamed the poor light and also didn't have the time to fidget with my camera. Turns out I'd accidentally activated one of the integrated ND filters 👿 and I could really kick myself. Amazingly the camera managed a few (VERY few) acceptable results, and here is one of them. Lesson learned, hopefully...

The little corn stalks look a little excited. Maybe it was the wind that made her fidget a little. I was walking alone that day and no one was to be seen anywhere – maybe they meant a ghost? ;-)

We're not being aggressive, but we're not kidding around, either.

I’d parked myself on the icy jetty for sunset shots of Mount Rundle but I’m a fidget so I wandered off and a group of photographers nabbed the prime spot. I could have elbowed my way in but the jetty wobbled a lot and they daringly had their tripods balanced on the thin ice. And their gear looked pretty expensive 😊 If you’re on Flickr I’d love to see your images, and to know what kind of cameras those are. Anyone?

As I walked along the trail. we spotted each other, almost simultaneously I think. He began to fidget almost immediately and I knew he was going to fly. With a distance of 120 yards or so, and not the best of backgrounds I thought perhaps it would be for not. I think it came out pretty good all things considered.

I had to fidget to get this Spinner pic.

Yellow spinner with exposed bearings.

magenta post it note, back lit

Grandson's new fidget spinner. Lighting was achieved by pushing an led light through a colour cube (new) to give the purple yellow split light.

For my initial fidget spinner study, I went with natural light and no flash and the result can be seen in the first comment. It was OK, but I wanted to see a bit more of the spinner so I included a flash. I placed the little fidget spinner that measures 2 5/8 inches across on a mirror with a black throw blanket for a backdrop. On-camera Nikon SB900 flash pointed at a white screen off camera right provided nice supplemental bounce lighting in addition to natural light. The exposure, 1/2 second, was set to get a decent amount of blur. The hardest part was spinning the thing and taking my finger off without it moving/sliding so I could keep focus on the insignia. By adding the flash, I was able to get a snapshot of the spinner, a cool reflection in the mirror AND the spinner motion. This worked for me and I was happy with the way it turned out.

Macro Mondays Theme - Motion Blur

#MacroMondays

#Party

Happy 17th Birthday, Macro Mondays :)

I joined Macro Mondays on 26 September 2016, and I'm a happy member ever since. A wonderful group that has taught me new photo techniques, lures me out of my comfort zone, saves me from the Winter blues, and kept me sane during those weird, time- and endless days of the pandemic. I also admire how the moderators manage to come up with new themes every week. Thank you, MMs!

And for "Party", it's Blingbert aka Bertie again. Of course, it had to be him ;) He got all excited when he heard what MM's Birthday theme would be about. "Let me come along!", he begged, "you know I love parties! Will there be Karaoke?" "I hope not", I answered. "Don't worry, Silke", Bertie said, "you don't have to sing, I'll do it!!!" He always knows how to talk me around. Bertie got even more excited. "I will sing an aria! How about something from The Valkyrie?" "What?!? No, you won't!", I yelled. "It's a party, Bertie, parties are about people having fun together. Fun. If you sing something from The Valkyrie the party will be over before it begins." Bertie looked seriously abashed. And I felt sorry for being so harsh on him. "Come on, I know you love Classical music. So let's take the 'Classic', and add 'Rock'. How about that?" "There's something like 'Classic Rock'"? He eyed me suspiciously. So what is more "Classic" in Rock music than the archetype of all things Rock? Rock 'n' Roll, of course. And when I played the YouTube video of Wanda Jackson's "Let's Have A Party" to him, he positively turned nuts. "Yessss! That's it! Why have I never heard this before? It will be a blast! And from now on, my second name is Wanda!"

You've seen "Blingbert Wanda" before (please see the first comment). For "Party", I retried my other idea for the (artificial) "Bird" theme: Bertie in front of a spinning fidget spinner. Back then, the backdrop had been far too busy. In my first attempt, I had used the camera's in-built "Live ND" filter, and didn't like either the colours, light, or the way the motion blur looked. So this time, I used a real ND filter, a Vario ND filter. It's also somewhat of a filter overkill because I wondered if I could combine the star filter with the ND filter because party = bling. I'm happy to say it worked, and this time, I also managed to get a nice-looking motion blur of the fidget spinner.

Setup: I glued the fidget spinner to a black tile with modeling clay. Next, I put Bertie Wanda on/halfway into a small glass Christmas bauble filled with tiny, shiny confetti stars. I used modeling clay once again to fixate the bauble on a small plastic box to get the right height. At one point, I also knocked the tile over when I rotated the fidget spinner, so the tile knocked Bertie on the bauble over, and all those tiny confetti stars got tossed onto the table, onto the carpet, everywhere... The joys of macro photography ;)

Size info: Bertie Wanda is 4,5 cm long, and the entire width of the frame is about 6 cm.
