Production photos by Debbie Robbins from Fidget Feet's marvellous new show The Elves and the Shoemaker which comes to An Grianán in December 2013
Meet Herman and Daisy,
They want to make shoes for your feet.
But they owe so much money they barely can eat.
Don’t worry though, because magic is always just around the corner. The Elves are here to help! And sometimes the answers are right above your head.
Fidget Feet’s The Elves & The Shoemaker is immersive storytelling with music and aerial circus for children aged between 4-8yrs and their families.
There is no stage, you will join them inside their workshop and actually help them to make the best pair of shoes ever made. This show is supported by The Arts Council, The Backstage Theatre, Longford and The Source Arts Centre, Thurles.
Herman, Daisy and the Elves need you!
4pm performance only: You can fly too!
After the main performance the children of the audience will have the opportunity to fly. There will be a short, thirty minute, aerial workshop supervised by the Fidget Feet cast and crew where children will learn some basic moves and lifts on Aerial Cocoons. This is an extremely fun, easy and safe introduction to Aerial for young children.

DETAILS ABOUT THE QUILT:
The quilt is made up of 5" x 5" squares of fabrics that have different textures. They all are either blue, green, purple, and/or gold in color (so there's some unity or color scheme). ... See More
I had my dad pick out pictures that were meaningful to him. He did this process twice - the second time finding some more pictures that he forgot to include the first time.
As I looked through them, I noticed that he didn't have some that I KNOW would have been meaingful. Asked him if he wanted to include (for example) the one of him with his steer. "YES!" he said. "But I couldn't find it."
So we went through one of his old scrapbooks together and any picture he stopped to talk about and share a good memory about, I took out. We came to a picture of his mom and dad when they were much younger and in a loving embrace (probably in their 40s). All he managed to get out before the tears started coming were, "They loved each other so much."
I scanned all the pictures he chose plus the ones we found together in the scrapbook. Put the images into a Microsoft Word document making sure that the pictures were no larger than 4" x 4". Printed them on fabric that has a heat-set backing (got it at Office Max).
Ironed the pictures onto 5" x 5" white cotton fabric squares so they stand out from the other quilt squares.
Sewed all the squares and rows together. Hand sewed some "fidget items" onto 1 square in every other row. For example, in one row are 2 gold angels (they have a shank on the back - like buttons) to represent his parents. In another row are 5 buttons to represent 5 people in his family.
Assembled and sewed the quilt together - the top, fiberfill middle (didn't want to use wool like I normally do just in case the quilt needs to be washed), and soft fleece backing (another texture - and the part that will be next to his body).
I secured all 3 layers together by putting yarn where the squares meet and knotting it. Not only does the yarn ensure the fiberfill stays in place, but adds another element of "fidget items" - things he can touch and manipulate as the disease progresses.

Detail of a cast of the west frieze of the Parthenon in the British Museum (unusually the original sculptures remained in situ and are now in the Aropolis museum. These casts however provide a good opportunity to get closer to the sculpture and show the detail in better condition than the originals now do, having suffered two more centuries of weather and pollution after these casts were taken.
The famous frieze of the Parthenon was the most ambitious ever conceived, forming a continuous strip of sculpted relief narrative around the perimeter of the inner part (cella) of the temple. It was thus the least easily seen, being set high within the collonnade and originally richly coloured to increase legibility from such a distant, shadowy position.
All four sides constituted a single continuous subject, the Panathenaic Procession, held every four years in honour of the Temple and city's patron Goddess Athena. It begins on the west side with various riders making preparation, then runs eastwards along bothe the long sides, north and south, before culminating in a group of seated deites on the east side (above the former main entrance). The procession is largely made up horses and riders in front of which are/were chariots, musicians, offering bearers and sacrificial animals (all of these latter groups suffered most in the explosion of 1687).
The frieze remained almost complete and in good condition for Jacques Carrey to draw most of it in 1674. Only thirteen years later disaster struck when the Pathenon was blown apart by the Turkish gunpowder store within hit by a Venetian shell. The inner part of the temple was mostly demolished, leaving most of the frieze prone at ground level, where much was lost to souvenir hunters, lime burners and casual vandalism before Elgin's team arrived.
Those sculptures that survived the explosion of 1687 were mostly removed by Lord Elgin's agents in the 1800s and sent to London where they currently remain. However he had to leave most of the west frieze in situ on the Parthenon where they remained until the late 1990s. Casts taken by Elgin's team show the west frieze has suffered damage from weathering and air pollution. It has now been restored for display in the new Acropolis Museum in Athens. Significant sections of the north, east and south friezes also remain in Athens.
The sculptures of the Parthenon (pediments, metopes and frieze)remain generally recognised as the most accomplished (both in terms of technical mastery and beauty of design) scheme of architectural sculpture ever realised. That so much of it has been lost (particulaly as the building remained substantially intact and in use continuously until 1687) is a tragedy, judging by what remains.
