LONG BEACH, CALIFORNIA, USA - Though nearly the entire movie Ferris Bueller's Day Off was shot in and around Chicago, the home used in the movie is actually located on a quiet, tree lined street in Long Beach, California.

Numerous homes in the neighborhood have been used as movie locations, including the house directly across the street from Ferris' home, which was used in American Pie 2 when the group were painting a house. Just down the street are two homes used in the 2001 Jake Gyllenhaal, Drew Barrymore, and Patrick Swayze movie Donnie Darko. And two blocks away is the home used in American Pie where Jim and his family lived.

Quite often I find a movie or a song will randomly pop in my head without having seen or heard it, and it somehow follows me around all day. But every once and a while I get that feeling that it came purposefully somehow- more than just a fleeting thought that attaches itself to me in a day.

This was my today. I remember watching this movie with my sister when it came on VHS. I still remember her laugh and how we rewound certain scenes to watch them over and over- how our sides hurt and how we quoted lines from this movie to one another for years after.

The day my sister passed I remember coming home and putting this movie in. I had literally just bought it on DVD, and as I lay in bed with it on a calmness came over me. Somehow I was able to not focus on my sister’s death or the sadness I felt. When I woke up I wanted it to all have been a dream. It was not. To this day I still fall asleep with a movie on, more so out of habit than anything else, but it started that day.

Today when this movie popped in my head, it just seemed like somewhere, somehow, my sister was thinking about me. Call me crazy, call me sentimental… but it made me smile as I shed a tear thinking about how we used to laugh. I miss you dear sister… I miss you…

A pillow for my partner. It's bound like a quilt, so you can hang it on your wall, if you rather.

'Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it'. So spoke the eponymous hero in 1986's Ferris Bueller's Day Off. I was in North London on something of a busman's holiday and decided this was solid advice worth heeding so headed out to do some 'research' into Highgate. It somehow yielded this result.

Some interesting facts about Highgate; St Michael's Church (pictured) is the highest church in London and as you enter the church you are all but level with the cross on the top of St Paul's Cathedral, there's literally tons of famous people buried in Highgate Cemetery from Karl Marx and George Michael to Jeremy Beadle and Alexander Litvinchenko, the 18th century farcical oath of 'Swearing on the Horns' was traditionally given to visitors at Highgate pubs. If you don't know about 'Swearing on the Horns' you really should check it out...

To celebrate these facts and Highgate in general I've produced this image. I think that's the best explanation I can come up with for its existence. It would be good to have a proper use for it. I should probably get on with some real work...

Cheers

With the frenetic pace of modern day life it seems that everyone is always in a rush to be getting along to some other place. Almost like whatever destination you're currently at is just a stepping stone to some other, better place. Which is surely a folly. Sometimes it's nice to just stop what you're doing and appreciate the moment. Or, as Ferris Bueller put it 'Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.' So there.

Made using spraypaint, stencils, text messages from my phone and some water droplets shamelessly stolen from MyDogSighs (and then inexplicably turned upside down) then affixed to a wall with one way security screws. Good luck getting that off.

Cheers

Architect: James Speyer

Speyer was a student of Mies and the International Style. The house rests on raised pylons like the Farnsworth House. There is privacy in the ravine setting and the 25 x 40 living room has plate glass windows on three sides to connect with the outside view. The exterior also has natural cypress siding. The other building on the property is a car pavilion jutting out over the ravine on steel pilings, which could not be built today because of zoning laws. This was a later addition done by Speyer's student David Haid. But this building was most famous for the Ferrari crash scene in Ferris Bueller. The Roses made no changes to the design and lived here until this past year.

Neither would I.

Any visual discrepancies between this 1/18 scale Hot Wheels shelf model and the "Ferrari 250GT California" seen in Ferris Bueller's Day Off are because of the fact that the car seen in Ferris Bueller's Day Off was actually an MGB modified to look like a Ferrari 250GT.

Cameron: The 1961 Ferrari 250GT California. Less than a hundred were made. My father spent three years restoring this car. It is his love, it is his passion.

Ferris: It is his fault he didn't lock the garage.

Cameron: Ferris, what are you talking about?

Ferris: Whoo!

Cameron: Ferris, my father loves this car more than life itself.

Ferris: A man with priorities so far out of whack doesn't deserve such a fine automobile.

Cameron: No, no. Apparently, you don't understand!

Ferris: Wow!

Cameron: Ferris, he never drives it. He just rubs it with a diaper.

(Ferris runs his finger along the side of the car.)

Cameron: Hey, remember how insane he went when I broke my retainer? Huh? Come on, that was a little piece of plastic, this is a Ferrari.

Ferris: Che bella!

(Ferris blows a kiss to the car.)

Ferris: Cameron, I'm sorry, but we can't pick up Sloane in your car. Mr. Rooney would never believe Mr. Peterson drives that piece of shit.

Cameron: It's not a piece of shit.

Ferris: It is a piece of shit. Don't worry about it, I don't even have a piece of shit, I have to envy yours.

Cameron: (Sarcastically) Oh, thanks.

Ferris: Look, I'm sorry. There's nothing else we can do. (Gets in car.) Whoo!

Cameron: He knows the mileage, Ferris.

Ferris: He doesn't trust you?

Cameron: Never has, never will.

Ferris: Look, this is real simple. Whatever miles we put on, we'll take off.

Cameron: How?

Ferris: We'll drive home backwards.

Cameron: (Grunty laugh.) No. NO!

(Ferris starts engine.)

Cameron: Ferris, forget it, you're just going to have to think of something else! I'm putting my foot down!

(Ferris begins to drive out of the garage.)

Cameron: How about we rent a nice Cadillac? My treat! We could call a limo! A nice stretch job with a TV and a bar! How about that?

(Ferris backs towards garage to pick up Cameron)

Ferris: Come on, live a little!

(Cameron makes a sign of the cross.)

Ferris Bueller (top) lived in Chicago but the location of the home that he lived in was actually in Long Beach, California.

This home is located at 4160 Country Club Dr, Long Beach.
